I'd honestly never known what the rest of the game looked like until I saw your review, because I could never get past Labyrinth Zone. Well it took me almost 25 years to do it, but I finally beat Labyrinth and the rest of the game tonight. Man was it satisfying to get that end screen, all emeralds or no emeralds.
Why do people compare these reviews with AVGN's? AVGN is a show, not intended as a full review/walkthrough, for entertainment only. Aqualung is an actual reviewer.
I don't understand why some people think Sonic is better than Mario or Mario is better than Sonic. To me, I think they’re both great franchises! Mario and Sonic shouldn't be competing to see who's better. They should be joining forces and starring in great games made by both Nintendo and Sega!
Although I know Sonic's more recent games have been given bad reviews, those reviews will not stop me from being the fan of him that I am right now. I've been a die-hard fan of him since the summer of 2001 (after playing a couple of his games that my cousin lent to me when he lent me his Genesis so I could play Wheel of Fortune on it), and I plan on keeping it that way until the end and after.
Great review and walkthrough, Aqualung! I was kinda hoping that you would divide the walkthrough up into three videos, although I wasn't aware that you pull a single video in a little over 25 minutes.
Now this is my SHIT!! I was a Genesis fanboy back in the 90's, and man I spent countless years of my youth playing the life out of this game. I never found the sequels to match up to the charm this game had. One minor note though, you forgot to mention you can speed up or slow down the turning of the mazes in the Special Zones by coming into contact with either the Up or Down bumpers. You obviously want to avoid the Up bumpers so you can navigate the mazes more efficiently. ; ) - helluva review!
awesome review of one of my most favorite games of all time, bravo aqualung! Would you ever be interested in doing a review/walkthrough of metroid for the nes? I always use to get so lost playing that game.
I have to give Sonic credit for going through six zones, all of them containing death traps that he has to avoid and robots that he must crush. And Sonic does that by using his ENTIRE body?!? That makes Mario's headsmashing seem comfortable!
Oh my god, I remember I always used to play this game with my sister. But we had to stop playing when our controller broke. It was 2008 so they were really hard to find and very expensive.
I forget if it was in this game or all the ones before 3D blast but I think if I remember one thing that happened was if you scored 100K points you got a continue (you also earned one in the special stages for 50 rings if I'm not mistaken)
Another great review Ken. The audio is out of sync in spots. Not a big deal, but I thought I'd point it out. The speed and the multilayered soundtrack of the game makes it a little more difficult to keep it in sync, I'm sure.
2:28 Some versions of the game give you recovery on spikes. If I recall... if you have Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic 1 on there allows recovery on the spikes. However... being a Genesis game, I honestly don't know if all versions have the Spike bug fixed, so I can't really say much. Maybe it was fixed before being ported over from the Genesis?
If I recall correctly (and apologies for the late comment) but I think his first one was actually Vectorman. I could be wrong but I'm almost positive that's the game that was his first
@AqualungGameReviews Maybe in a future Sonic game review (like Sonic 3, maybe; if I remember right, the game drops down signposts after you beat bosses, and transitions you in a different way into the next zone), you can sneak such a reference in, and hope nobody happens to see this, heh. Anyway. Don't mind me trying to see a reference that may not actually be there. XD And as always, an entertaining review, sir.
You should have mentioned how at the end of Labyrinth Zone Act 3 when the 3 corks rise up from the water, if you walk back to the checkpoint and sit there, the water will come back down if you fall off.
and an awesome one at that, i've found a few games i've missed from my childhood that i've played through and enjoyed because of aqua, and learned to stay away from some, like swamp thing. I still think people give too much hate to friday the 13th though, it's actually a fun, relaxing game. :P
I just want to tell you a trick: In Labyrinth Zone Act 3, you forgot to mention that if the three floating corks at the end float away, you can just walk to the very left to make the water sink back down. T_T
2 issues- the spike thing is actually a programming glitch -the speed, in this game was actually slowed down because in test periods it gave people a slight case of nausea (and that's why people think of sonic as being a bad ass- he'll make you puke)
In all honesty, Super Mario World > Sonic the Hedgehog because it has a map screen stage select, alternate paths, and a save function, making more like modern games. BRING IT ON, FLAMERS! I hope that you, aqualung, can respond to this comment with a calmer temperament like a decent person unlike the many Sonic fanboys who will likely thumbs down this comment to death and reply with angry rants and raves.
Damn you Aqualung! Between watching AVGN, IrateGamer and your video's.....I keep finding myself going to eBay to buy back my childhood! How are you doing these walkthru's? I can only play casually if its via emulator or virtual console. If I am going to sit down and beat one of these classic games, I can only do it seriously with the original hardware. Not even a RetroN will do! Keep up the good work, and love the digs at IG!
@InvaderPet it's true, I uploaded a 20 min video yesterday. I wasn't sure If i could do it but when I went to upload there was a message that said congratulations your account can now upload videos longer then 15 minutes.
Ehh, it's not necessarily a bad game, but the Marble Zone, platforming sections of the Spring Yard Zone, underwater sections and the palette-swapped final zone bring the game down somewhat for me. The sequels were much better.
Rob Harrison so you're ok with a humanoid hedgehog freeing non-humanoid animals in trippy worlds full of robot enemies etc... but those rings make it unrealistic for you? ;) Just accept the game and game mechanics for what they are - both are great.
Rob Harrison Mario has coins, and I don't know about newer games, but in the original game he never used the coins to go shopping either. They were primarily a means to raise the hiscore.
Games don't need to be realistic and logical in everything. The rings are just a random health system that the player can collect in order to stay alive.
@AqualungGameReviews Really? To me, the limit still seems to be 1 GB. I know it says 2, but I tried to upload one once, and it told me that the limit was 1.

Me to get Rekt
Why do people compare these reviews with AVGN's?
AVGN is a show, not intended as a full review/walkthrough, for entertainment only. Aqualung is an actual reviewer.
Some people seem to think ANYONE who does youtube videogame reviews is automatically an AVGN ripoff.
ever notice that the purple parts of the brain scrap zone background look like nether portals from minecraft?
I don't understand why some people think Sonic is better than Mario or Mario is better than Sonic. To me, I think they’re both great franchises! Mario and Sonic shouldn't be competing to see who's better. They should be joining forces and starring in great games made by both Nintendo and Sega!
I really look forward to seeing you review Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and S&K if you get around to them!
Although I know Sonic's more recent games have been given bad reviews, those reviews will not stop me from being the fan of him that I am right now. keep it up i love your reviewing style from the start
Wow. You've said a lot. That much dedication deserves a sub. Hope it wasn't too tiring.
I'm looking forward to you reviewing the other ones.
picture of eggman is actually pretty funny :P
I have to give Sonic credit for going through six zones, all of them containing death traps that he has to avoid and robots that he must crush.
And Sonic does that by using his ENTIRE body?!? That makes Mario's headsmashing seem comfortable!
I always thought that whenever Sonic swallowed an air bubble that he was saying "blow bubbles!" each time.
0:46 HOLY SHIT! HIS EYEBALLS ARE CONNECTED!
To quote Hannu Makinen "We all fell in love with that sexy monotone voice" xD
the nintendo/genesis era was the best
its great when you put a review and walkthrough together as one thats i think that your much better than hacks like rooster teeth and stampylonghead!
Oh my god, I remember I always used to play this game with my sister. But we had to stop playing when our controller broke. It was 2008 so they were really hard to find and very expensive.

And the sign post up ahead. Next stop Act 3. Nice Twilight Zone reference!!!
Awesome review / Awesome game !! Great job !
Another great review Ken. The audio is out of sync in spots. Not a big deal, but I thought I'd point it out. The speed and the multilayered soundtrack of the game makes it a little more difficult to keep it in sync, I'm sure.
Thanks Aqua lung good memories all round.

Great review once again, Aqualung.
Haha, great review, but I wonder: did you try to make the review as fast as the game itself? :D
Keep up the good work!
I would love a review/walkthrough of Sonic Cd...
If I recall correctly (and apologies for the late comment) but I think his first one was actually Vectorman. I could be wrong but I'm almost positive that's the game that was his first
holy crap i played sonic since it first came out and i never knew the R was for reversing the direction or the maze
I have been subbed to auqalung for years , hes awsome , and will be a partner soon . He has the voice and the experence , he cant fail .
@AqualungGameReviews

are you doing the other genesis sonic games? i love the music in the first sonic it just brings back memories when I hear it
Like how you emphasize BALLS in Spring Yard Zone =D
9:33~9:35
Why did I expect you to say "The Twilight Zone" instead of "Act 3"? XD
Damn right Rated A I been play this game since I was a 90s kid
At 8:05, there is a bonus; go to the left and you'll go through a secret tunnel with 40 rings and a life.
I always hated controlling my way through the spinning maze with the bird backgrounds.
and an awesome one at that, i've found a few games i've missed from my childhood that i've played through and enjoyed because of aqua, and learned to stay away from some, like swamp thing.
I still think people give too much hate to friday the 13th though, it's actually a fun, relaxing game. :P
You should do a Review/Walkthrough of Alter Beast. I love that game.
aqualung: actual step by step walkthroughs 4.5 stars
avgn: commentary 4 stars
irategamer: no comment. 1 star
just like koalatulip47 says aqua i hope in the future u review/walkthrough sonic 2 and 3 with knuckles and sonic spinball :)
I just want to tell you a trick: In Labyrinth Zone Act 3, you forgot to mention that if the three floating corks at the end float away, you can just walk to the very left to make the water sink back down. T_T
also on emerald hill when u fight dr. robotnik, if u jump right, u can just constantly bounce on him and beat him faster
yo, if you're gonna do Genesis reviews now, you should review Ristar for the Genesis!
Sonic has hit LUDICROUS SPEED!!!
Great review, i always hated Labarynth zone, such a pain in the ass!
I'm always surprised by the fact that the European/PAL version runs slower. The music always sounds weird to me because it sounds faster. =)
2 issues- the spike thing is actually a programming glitch
-the speed, in this game was actually slowed down because in test periods it gave people a slight case of nausea (and that's why people think of sonic as being a bad ass- he'll make you puke)
could you do a castlevania review next? that would be awesome!
Nice one Aqua
@joejoerg i know right, who changed it to that its Robotnik, not Eggman

When I'm underwater I always ear a little "di-ding!"... Is that a timer for the oxigen limit?
Very nice review by the way!
are you gonna review all the sonci games?
Great review, great game!!
Damn you Aqualung! Between watching AVGN, IrateGamer and your video's.....I keep finding myself going to eBay to buy back my childhood! How are you doing these walkthru's? i remember robotnic to be more challengeing in sonic and knuckles
@InvaderPet it's true, I uploaded a 20 min video yesterday. I wasn't sure If i could do it but when I went to upload there was a message that said congratulations your account can now upload videos longer then 15 minutes.
nice review
How did you get the video 25 minutes long? I thought the limit was 15?
Did you record this off of the 360 or PS3 versions? Or was it off of an actual genesis?
Also, if you don't mind me asking, what took away the + from the A rating of this game? I didn't ever hear you say something negative.
i miss the Computer version of this game. is that game still available for computer? its been so long i dont know how to look for it.
They fixed the spike glitch in later versions of sonic 1
Please do a review of Sonic & Knuckles
this is a REAL walkthrough
It's a little off-sync but other than that awesome as always :P
Just one thing dude , the screen flicks abit too fast , so i got abit confused at points .
I personally think Sonic 2 is the best Sonic game of all-time. Folled close by Sonic CD.
You think you'll be able to review Sonic the Hedgehog 2 one day?
great review =D
When are you going to do Sonic 2?
He forgot to mention there a invisibly star before the first eggman
Ehh, it's not necessarily a bad game, but the Marble Zone, platforming sections of the Spring Yard Zone, underwater sections and the palette-swapped final zone bring the game down somewhat for me. The sequels were much better.
I always hated the Labyrinth Zone in this game. It drives me nuts!
@AqualungGameReviews hey aqua can u do sonic cd?
Look Out For Cattakiller!
I never understood why Sonic collects rings? Seems like a really stupid health system.
best health system in video game history. You can manage to collect your lost rings and stay alive. Fun and innovative.
Rob Harrison so you're ok with a humanoid hedgehog freeing non-humanoid animals in trippy worlds full of robot enemies etc... but those rings make it unrealistic for you? ;)
Just accept the game and game mechanics for what they are - both are great.
Rob Harrison

Can you review Sonic 2?
Lol!
The only thing that seperates sonic from all other platformers is the ability to run at 500-fucking-miles per hour!
@AqualungGameReviews Really? To me, the limit still seems to be 1 GB. I know it says 2, but I tried to upload one once, and it told me that the limit was 1.
@AqualungGameReviews oh right, this ones called green hill, derp >_>
At the hegiining, The medadrive pwned the NES and SNES in Europe
I cant get super sonic in the first 3 games. I was trying to copy what the LP's did but it didnt work.
Would this be your first review of a Sega game?
Yay!
Robotnik needs to stop with the damn spikes already.
Can you do sonic the hedgehog 2 and 3 please?
you should do sonic 3 and Knuckles, its the best one
Can you do sonic the hedgehog 4 episode 1 and 2 please?
This walkthrough is a little late. You guys won't believe how many times I died trying to finish this game.
This game uses Blast Processing.
@AqualungGameReviews Perhaps the emulator capture couldn't handle the sheer speed of the game.
aqualung, will you ever review a requested game? if so, please do the atari porn series. id like to see you play them. lol
Not Wasp, "Buzz Bomber"! Not Caterpiller, "Caterkiller"
I thought it was the GBA port judging by the title. lol
Yep thats right son
