- Billionaire investor Robert Smith surprised graduating students at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, by using his speech at Sunday's commencement ceremony to pledge to pay off the student loan debt of the entire class of 2019.
"This is my class, 2019, and my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans," Smith said during his speech, pointing towards hundreds of students dressed in black robes and mortarboards. "I know my class will make sure they pay this forward," Smith added.

Ruby Johns liberal arts school. I think the best they’ve got is Social Sciences which are a subset of most careers anyways, unless your end goal is high school teacher/college professor.
My dad went to Morehouse and then med school and is a doctor now. However that being said college is what you make of it. Most people don’t do anything with it. That’s just facts.
He wasn’t always rich, and it definitely does show, how he was willing to do this!

what gets lost in this is the educational system is really a ponzi scheme. we borrow money, pay into the system, the school administration gets rich, professors are really well paid and get tenure and pensions, and unless we start companies we wont have jobs to pay back the loans for a long time. Im glad i did it...went to Harvard for my MBA, but it took years and years to finally pay it off. frustrating. This guy did such a great thing today. I dont think college and grad school should be ""free''...however it should be more affordable with a logical tuition structure. we shouldnt need a kind billionaire to do this...

Morehouse is an all male HBCU. Most of the students graduate with business or science degrees, though the school certainly offers humanities/ and social science study too.
