I remember this film on cable in the 80's (I was going through my Errol Flynn phase). I was shocked that it was a young Robert Wagner. Tons of fun. Excellent swashbuckler score by Waxman. As an aside, I got to meet Robert Wagner at the El Paso Classic Film Festival. Very nice conversation. As he was signing both the book I bought and my copy of "The Longest Day" DVD he asked me what I did for a living. I told him I teach 6th Grade World Cultures. He put down the pen and announced to the entire room that I had a difficult job that he could never do and he admired me for doing it. I walked out of there feeling ten feet tall. Thanks for the memories Fred.
The 1950s marked the golden age for swashbuckling knights on the big screen. "Ivanhoe" (1952), "Knights Of The Round Table" (1953) to name a few (both scored by Miklos Rozsa). The story about Prince Valiant, however was completely based on a comic series by Hal Foster and decided to made into a film by 20th Century Fox and starring a very young Robert Wagner as the lead. The colorful movie would have the same spirit as the (even then already) proclaimed classics as "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" (1938) to entertain children and adults alike. That spirit would eventually elevate as well from the film's score by Franz Waxman, who got clearly inspired by the grand movie scores of the past, adding his own style to it, resulting in one of the finest swashbuckling scores written for the screen, with energetic main titles, a heartwarming love theme and an all in all masterfully written and performed score (by the 20th Century Fox Studio Orchestra). Enjoy!
Shalom Fred, I remember seeing this film as a teenager. However, the music I became fond of later in my adult life. This score has that 20th Century Fox sound the strings are major. Thanks, my friend...hope you are well.
@@davidlai1996 Hello David, right you are! It is one of the first FSM releases from 1999 (as you surely know). It's such a superb score of which I still hope to get it re-released with a major sound upgrade someday. Nevertheless we can be thankful for this and all those other splendid scores that already got released, can't we? Best to you and until our next conversation, hopefully soon. :-) Fred
Hi, Fred! I have this soundtrack in vynil! Franz Wachsmann ( his first name, from the old Koeniggshutte, currently belonging to Poland ) was a great composer ( became " Waxman " in 1934 ), one of the Hitchcock's partners, before the " Herrmann Age "( as well as Louis Levy - in England -, and Dimitri Tiomkin ). " Prince Valiant " is a typical music of the " Golden Age ", " stuffed " by trumpets & strings, and, ironically ( Mr. Waxman was very moody ), in high spirits!... Thanks again, Fred, and nice weekend!!
Just love the old score and soundtracks . Do you have the ful score of the cronikels of mars .Stanley meijers a believe. Any way thank for the good music a have also many score 's..good job 😊😊🤗🤗
Interesting story about the singing sword used by Wagner to defeat Masons character. It is still in existence. As I recall there were three swords. One was only the hilt in a scabbard, #2 was only one side finished, #3 was made of aluminum for the fight scenes.
One of the grandest and most heroic "hero" themes ever composed; it would fit seamlessly into and modern film and still feel just as valid. This, Batman (Danny Elfman), and Willow (James Horner) have the best themes ever composed since Robin Hood.

It's a great score, though the tape transfered does show its age. Thanks for sharing!!! I'm celebrating the return of my music library with this. :)
