I lived in Russia for 17 years. Putin is LOVED by vast majority of Russians, period. During my years from 2003 to 2020, I first hand saw how he transformed Russia from state of chaos and uncertainty, to land of prosperity, growth and hope.

Hubby is half Russian and has been visiting the country regularly since the 1970s when he was still a baby. There's been so much improvement in the last 2 decades. While there's still a lot to do and to improve, it can't be denied that Russia is becoming a first world country. It won't happen overnight though, considering how bad the situation was for a long time. Hubby and I are considering moving to Russia.

Nah Piers was justified to ask Sachs to condemn Putin. A neutral person will say Russia invasion was illegal and unjustified but Russia was provoked by Ukraine and the west. A Pro West person will never admit the provocation. A pro Russia person will never admit it was illegal and unjustified. Every person speaking on Russo-Ukrainian conflict or NATO-Russian relations should be asked to say these things as a baseline before question 2.

It's standard practice to ask someone to demonstrate objectivity by saying something positive/negative if they've been ranting on about it's being negative/positive. When the person can't, it shows that they're engaged emotionally, not rationally. Pretty ironic for an academic.
I think he probably doesn't, and if he did he would dismiss it as the opinions of those who aren't journalists, and therefore aren't as in touch, or in the know, or as clever as he is. Over-arching ego can be a problem for all of us - and that applies to the dim as much as the less dim; we can all over-estimate our skill and intellect, and I suspect most of us do it more than we realise.

Hubby is half Russian and has been visiting the country regularly since the 1970s when he was still a baby. There's been so much improvement in the last 2 decades. While there's still a lot to do and to improve, it can't be denied that Russia is becoming a first world country. It won't happen overnight though, considering how bad the situation was for a long time. Hubby and I are considering moving to Russia.

It's standard practice to ask someone to demonstrate objectivity by saying something positive/negative if they've been ranting on about it's being negative/positive. When the person can't, it shows that they're engaged emotionally, not rationally. Pretty ironic for an academic.

I think he probably doesn't, and if he did he would dismiss it as the opinions of those who aren't journalists, and therefore aren't as in touch, or in the know, or as clever as he is. Over-arching ego can be a problem for all of us - and that applies to the dim as much as the less dim; we can all over-estimate our skill and intellect, and I suspect most of us do it more than we realise.
