    Why doesn't Dell develop XPS 17! Same as the 15 inch model, it would have a 17 inch screen in a 15 inch laptop body, full sized keyboard and a GTX 1060 graphics, along with infinity edge 4k display with 99 Whr battery - weighing up to 2.5 kgs! All these specs are absolutely doable with today's technology. I guarantee, it would have record sales! But why can't Dell workout this simple idea?!!!

    • @Jeremy-lu3nx
      @Jeremy-lu3nx 7 лет назад +15

      Do you think they could get it as thin as the xps models though with a 1060? I feel like heat is an issue, plus the R&D to get it that thin would put the laptop starting at 2.5k -3k range.

    • @ravirajyaguru5905
      @ravirajyaguru5905 7 лет назад +2

      I believe, as they would be working with larger chassis there would be more room for efficient thermal solutions for 1060, by not compromising thinness too much. Sure it won't be as thin as XPS 15, but small bumo in thickness would be easily acceptable for such specs.

    • @bstjules
      @bstjules 7 лет назад +16

      Not everyone wants to spend ~3k on a laptop, and with those specs and the R&D required it would probably start at that price and only go up from there

    • @hoff521
      @hoff521 7 лет назад +11

      Because the xps is not a gaming laptop, and for professional applications you don't need any more power. It already packs top intel quad core CPUs, the only benefit you might gain from the extra space and cooling is the ability to bump up to a 1060, which again, is not required for dell's target audience.

    • @ravirajyaguru5905
      @ravirajyaguru5905 7 лет назад

      Brandon St.Jules, I believe they already have enough R&D for XPS 15. And they must have learned many things by making 2 generations of XPS 15, so they can effectively apply it for XPS 17. And as for price bump, the new XPS 17 would be no more expensive than current Alienware 15 and 17 laptops, and current Alienwares have become way cheaper than previous generation models. Absolutely doable project for Dell, in my opinion!

    For anyone on the fence - I bought this new on sale for $800 CAD ($630 USD) (8gb ram, 4gb 1050, i5 2.5ghz) and it plays RS6: Siege on max in 1080p at 60fps... PUBG is at a solid 60 fps at 1080p with a mix of low and high settings, have to sacrifice some shadows and lighting... gotta go with a 1060 if you want ultra gfx PUBG.

    I have the 9550 and I love it, nothing like it in the market for this price but Dell has to get their warranty support department's shit together. I have had to send my laptop multiple times for minor issues and they come back without being fixed then you have to send it back again and again... this is BS. Oh and BTW the flickering issue on the 4k screen was fixed a YEAR AFTER the release date, unacceptable for a laptop this expensive, no wonder people buy macbooks.

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  7 лет назад

      Hasan Chowdhury also I don't know much about the gl502 but I think it has a 970M in it and that is last generation technology from Nvidia. however depending on the configuration they're about the same performance. and no I didn't see any ghosting issues with the XPS 15.

    • @hasanc1904
      @hasanc1904 7 лет назад

      HotHardware thank you! the dell has a 1050( the one I hope to get) so seems to be better for gaming when not even a gaming laptop. Huge plus is the thinnes, makes me want it more. Again 10 seconds, if u could sub twice aaaaaa

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  7 лет назад +1

      Well, to be clear, the ASUS machine you mentioned is a ROG series, so a specifically designed gaming notebook. However, based on the configs I see, about on par horsepower-wise with the XPS 15, which I think looks a heck of a lot nice - though that's personal preference. :)

    Getting this Tuesday. So excited! I had a Inspiron 5523 for about 4 years. Horrible laptop and it was marketed as an ultrabook even though it was like 5 pounds lol. Looking forward to gaming and producing (music) on this XPS 15. Sure its no alienware but it games good enough

      U can probably run any game for a few minutes before huge waves of lag start pouring in. I personally have this laptop and upgraded up to 32 ram. Once it heats up its impossible to run anything. Even tried Roblox on lowest graphics settings. Not the best.

  • @silentiumsky

    @HotHardware
    I plan on getting the i5 8gb ram version of the XPS 15. How much will this differ from the one you tested gaming wise? Is there a big difference between i5 vs i7? 8gb vs 16gb?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  7 лет назад

      So it depends on your use-case. Core i5 dual core versus Core i7 quad core is a significant processing resource difference, but if you're not doing CPU-intensive work, you'll likely not miss it when gaming as much or other lighter duty tasks. If you work with big content creation or business dataset workloads it will show its weaknesses with only two cores, 4 threads. 8GB of RAM vrs 16 is similar, but only for larger desktop workloads like video encoding etc, and lots of multitasking. If you find yourself running a bunch of apps simultaneously, more RAM is a cheap insurance policy for performance.

    • @silentiumsky
      @silentiumsky 7 лет назад

      HotHardware
      Aha got it. What I'll be doing isn't going to need much CPU but if I need the extra ram I can just buy some more. Thank you! Definitely subbing.

      Alright, to start off, I used to be a Plat III player back in Chimera, so I can give you some info on R6. But for BF 1, I can give u some, but not much. I'm using a laptop 1050 with 4GB GDDR5, and on R6 Lowest settings, 1080p, with Render Scaling at 100%, and T-AA sharpness at 40%, I got anywhere from 85-115FPS. I played on Oregon, with Ash, so I was running around pretty quickly, lol. It depends on the map as well. In Yacht, the FPS are a bit lower, due to the added snow effects and such. Moving onto BF1, I can tell you can play smoothly at Ultra settings 1080p, around 40-50FPS. And on Lowest possible settings at 1080p, anywhere from 80-100FPS. Hope this helps you! =)) Just a prove that I do play R6, here's my account stats, add me if you want to play with me =)) r6db.com/player/8cf09fbe-6550-445e-a4ba-ca0949e0bcd5

    I have a XPS 15 old version L502X. That was the best of the XPS 15 series. At least you get bass boost speakers and you can add a supplemental hard drive in the CD'rom slot. But, nowadays, these newer version have crappy sound and have no replacable batteries. Such a shame. This keeps me from upgrading to the newest XPS 15

    Great Video!
    Im looking to get a good laptop for college as well as for some mild pc gaming . Right now i am stuck between this and the MSI 15 inch stealth withe the 1060. In your opinion, is the extra power but worse battery life and display on the MSI worth it over the Dell? Also , what kind of temps were you running while playing as i know the cooling system in the XPS was not made to handle heavy gaming?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Well, it depends on how important gaming is to you and at what resolution you want to game. The 1060 has significantly more punch but that MSI machine can't match the build quality of the XPS 15. The XPS 15 is a cross-over type device, part premium ultrabook with great build quality and display, but also with a little gaming juice under its hood. That MSI machine is more of a formal gaming notebook, more like an Alienware machine, for example. Just depends on which way your personal needs are leaning towards.

    could you give details for it's performance with e-sports titles for 720p, 1080p, and 4k like overwatch, dota 2, csgo, hearthstone, and civilization 6? (last one's not e-sports) there's a large chunk of gamers play these titles frequently. I think having both the AAA titles and e-sports titles would greatly increase the quality of your reviews in the eyes of gamers.

    hey, does the vram usage ever exceed 2 GB? I feel like dell using 4gb vram instead of 2 gb was a waste as the original gtx 1050 destop only had 2gb when nvidia released it.

      sidharth sunilkumar sorry I wasn't answering your question there. I would say north of 1080p resolutions you're definitely hitting more than two gigabytes of vram. that said I'm not sure there's an easy way to test 1080p gaming with two and four gig. I would say definitely 4 gig will offer more breathing room for frame buffer than 2GB obviously. I don't think it's a waste at all

    I wish there were a few more benchmarks including The Witcher 3, GTA V, The Division, Battlefield 1 etc - a bit more demanding games but popular games, as well as less demanding titles like Diablo 3.
    8-minute video to test 2 games and a benchmarking app (which is not really a good reference on how powerful a gaming machine is) is too long.

    I'm deciding between this dell and the razer blade. The blade has a 1060 in it but cost 250 more than the dell does and has the blade core. Is it worth the extra 250 or would this dell be good enough for any game on high with little to no trouble?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  7 лет назад

      At 1080p, I would say most game are pretty smooth on this machine on high setting, no max or ultra. However, that 1060 in the Blade is much more powerful. It depends on what you want. The Dell is more of an ultrabook that can game. The Blade a gaming machine trying to act like an ultrabook. :)

      From design standpoint, I prefer the Dell machine. However, that GTX 1060 in the ASUS GL503 will give you more gaming horsepower, though at the expense of battery life. ASUS makes quality stuff too, so it just depends on your needs. The Dell machine I feel has a better build quality and display though, for what it's worth.

      if you guys haven't bought this yet, I would do more research if this is the one for you. I got the 9550 and for gaming purposes, even the slightest, it's plaguing with low/throttle fps issues. The chassis of the laptop and the heat sink has poor circulation to draw out the heat. I would not get it if you want to do gaming. The only perk of this laptop is the ergonomics, but you can find plenty of thinner laptops at a lower price.

      The speakers are very anemic out of the box, HOWEVER, it is very easy to remedy. Open up the Waves MaxAudioPro app (included), then enable it on the first Playback tab. I really do not know why this is not enabled by default.

    • @andreastheodorou9807
      @andreastheodorou9807 7 лет назад

      It is, I believe. If you want a 1060 you have to sacrifice panel quality, battery life, and/or build quality.
      The AW13 R3 OLED has an even better display than the XPS (!!!), but it is 13" vs 15". Also, I wouldn't call it "professional", but you can tune it down by turning off lights -still, you will have an Alien's head as a logo...
      The Gigabyte Aero 14-W offers quite a bit of battery life, but has a worse than the Dell panel. Also, the build quality -while good for plastic- is subpar compare to the XPS.
      The Clevo P650 is well-made (still, not as good as the Dell), but has a worse panel and battery life. Still, it is relatively thin/light for a gaming laptop and has better cooling than the rest.
      The Clevo P640 has a 1050Ti, making it a better gaming machine for much less money, but it is worse than the XPS in everything else.

    • @alejorag
      @alejorag 7 лет назад +1

      Might want to look into the Razer Blade. It has a 1060 and putting a skin on it if you don't like their logo will make it look 100% professional and gorgeous.

    • @iReviewer1486
      @iReviewer1486 7 лет назад

      Thanks that's actually probably the one I'll get, especially if I can find a good skin.

    • @andreastheodorou9807
      @andreastheodorou9807 7 лет назад +2

      Personally, I wouldn't touch the Blade at all. Have a look here: forum.notebookreview.com/forums/razer.1109/ on the owner's lounges.
      They have the worst customer support and they run (really) hot. The early-2017 runs better than the late-2016 version, but only due to a more aggressive fun system. Don't get me wrong, the RB Stealth and RB Pro are great, but the new Blade is just not there.
      Personally, I wouldn't touch one after reading this: forum.notebookreview.com/threads/razer-ceo-covering-up-cheap-poor-design-of-razer-notebooks.801443/
      IMO the XPS if you are leaning more on battery or a Clevo if you are leaning towards gaming are the best options.

I'd also like to do some mild gaming like pub battlegrounds and trying to learn adobe premiere on it. What should I settle for ? The i5 (8GB, 1TB HDD, 32GB SSD, 56Whr) for $1800 CAD or The i7 (16GB, 512GB SSD, 97Whr) for $2299 CAD ? I'd really like the extra battery time and the SSD but is it worth the $500 more ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

      BH, without question, I'd say the SSD and extra RAM are worth it. At $500 more it's a little pricey but especially that SSD will make the entire system much more responsive. Good luck!

      Those types of titles will run easily on this machine and any current ultrabook really. Battery life with this machine is solid and depending on the display type you choose can be even stronger. The 1080p option will have the best battery life. The 4K panel has a lot of pixels to light up and will eat power faster. More here: hothardware.com/reviews/dell-xps-15-9560-review

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  7 лет назад

      No clue on that one, sorry. The machine is already sent back. I can tell you though, that I saw zero throttling. The GPU is well within its thermal limits , even after continuous benchmark loops during testing.

    • @tricksieboy
      @tricksieboy 7 лет назад

      I own this laptop and have to say that thermal throttling is definitely present in this laptop. Not even just a little bit but ALOT. When playing actual games which is demanding on both the GPU and CPU then the temps creep right up for the GPU and it throttles right down. There are some things to do that can help the situation but largely no fixes.

      Please, stop with the clickbait slander. Some gamers might argue a 1050 is borderline in certain games, so it's not a definite thing but that's not the point. This video answers not only can it game but how well and in what sorts of game titles/settings.

    • @sashakiselev8456
      @sashakiselev8456 7 лет назад

      1050 is definitely not borderline. The 3 most popular GPUs according to steam survey are the 1060 960 and 750Ti, and the 1050 easily beats the 750Ti and can go head to head with the 960. It's only borderline if you have an addiction to using the ultra preset. IF the title was how well can it game then It would not be a problem
