    Just a quick comment. Thomas is the gold standard for RUclips reviews, especially for European cars. This review is typically good. He not only conveys his reactions to the car but gives viewers a sense of his values and biases. That helps viewers see his reviews in context. I have warm and fuzzy feelings for Subaru. And I should: I'm driving a 14-year-old Subaru that has not needed a repair yet.

      Agree that this RUclips channel always ranks German cars above everything else - basically a German propaganda channel.
      I too like Subaru.

    Great and detailed review. As for the Levorg, I must say that I was sold on first sight. Last week I took it for a test drive and have to say that it drives like a dream. Road handling is so nice. Right down in the middle of sporty and comfy. You must try it. I actualy think that they've done great with CVT! Right now I own a Legacy IV Diesel which I love, but this is a different animal. Don't expect it to be WRX because it's not. It's way more comfy and family oriented. The 1.6 turbo is nice and economical, but I must say that it would be nice for Subaru to change market strategies for EU, and offer 2.0 Diesel, as well as 2.0 Petrol turbo.

  • @berndog3
    @berndog3 8 лет назад +7

    I have to agree with Adrian Black. This is definitely, without question, a wagon version of the Impreza/WRX. Same wheelbase, same dashboard/instrument panel. The Legacy has about a 4 inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase and is about 2.3 inches wider. The Legacy is, overall, quite a bit larger than the Impreza/Levorg. BTW, the 2016 Legacy is currently available in the U.S. The wagon version of the Legacy that we get is called the Outback and has a raised suspension and a few different styling cues. Same as the one you get in Germany.
    Aside from the model mix-up, it is, as always, a great review.

    This is a great review.Thanks.
    In the past. I drove a 2004 STI and a 2013 BRZ so I am familiar with the Subarus.
    When I looked at the Levorg at first it seemed odd with the name and all but after test driving it I liked it a lot.
    We are going to lease a new car and Levorg is definitely a candidate now. Especially given the fact that all those European brands are extremely expensive in Turkey, Levorg is a steal given AWD, Boxer engine, reliability and my Subaru bias.
    Your comments regarding the CVT was interesting because I liked it despite what the British reviewers have said and written in their reviews.
    The fact that it comes in one guise is great because when you spec up the European brands to Levorg level, at least in Turkey, they become more expensive. Besides, at least for me, Subaru is a great albeit a niche brand that I like a lot.

      I bought a Levorg and driven about 1000 kilometers. My initial impressions that I shared with you after the test drive are confirmed. It is fun to drive, it can carry the family and the dog (a labrador) with ease, it is more frugal than Ford Kuga. I added Audio Technich amplifier and sub-woofer, DSL speakers to get rid of the cardboard OEM speakers and improve the sound quality. The head unit is Clarion but it is a bit on the cheap side. Changing it was a hassle and I kept it. There was huge improvement in sound quality.
      In Turkey Subaru XV is a big hit and given this price level, if Levorg is imported in sufficient numbers, I am sure Levorg will be as well. A 4Motion Passat with equivalent kit level is 50% more expensive for example. And recently Subaru Turkey starter running a Turkish produced ad campaign that is rather succesful meaning that it is coming out of the shadows.

    with the SI mode the CVT accelerates faster and more linearly - I drove the legacy diesel and have to say that in this mode the acceleration as well as the control of the revs by the cvt is very similar to the manual diesel legacy - in fact not for no reason they have the same 0 - 100km/h acceleration times. Certainly with the I mode the cvt returns to a elastic band like acceleration when strongly accelearated, however in relxed driving and acceleration the I mode is miraculous, keeping the revs constant +/- 10% until you reach high speeds > 130km/h where the revs need to go up to allow more power from the engine...overall I agree the steering has more "play", but on a country road the car drives like on rails, extremly precise follwoing the direction desire by the driver, the suspension is critisized as soft and comfortable...I would say that of the 2008 diesel legacy was softer...this is hard compared to that, definately harder than the A4, with standard 16"allowys in the lower trims, but less hard than the S versions from Audi...I think an excellent compromise.
    Thanks for the really great in depth review

    Excellent review. Keep up the good work.
    Have had Legacy wagons '91 turbo, '94 turbo, '07 2.0 R AT and now '10 2.5 CVT Outback. While the suspension, engines and boxes are still solid, each generation adds few potential electrical issues. Starting from '07 which has HID as std equipment, auto adjustment fails. Also that stupid reverse air intake valve, which was eventually removed from next generation. HID adjustment keeps failing for 2010. In addition, ABS sensor in CVT gearbox is prone to fail and not cheap to replace. I have heard rumours that on Outbacks starting from 2014 the AWD system is totally electronically controlled (like on Volvo), meaning, if you have blown ABS fuse, you technically drive a FWD car. If that's true, '10 is my last Subaru.

    I would absolutely prefer a wagon to the sedan. It's frustrating how few options for wagons over here. The only larger wagon we have here is the E Class. If they brought it to the states, they would practically have the market to themselves.

    I've been driving a Legacy '08 Wagon 2.0R for the last couple of years and was a great purchase. Had to service it of course before starting it's new life with me, changed the timing belt, filters, automatic transmission oil, gave it a really nice fresh fully synthetic oil and drives really okay on the battered Bulgarian roads. Suspension-wise had to change some tampons and it feels like new and the boxer, man this thing sounds beautiful!

    Really like the Levorg. How and why they came up with the name is a total enigma though. I find it a real shame that they are not offering it with a manual gearbox. Also unfortunate that the 2 liter version is not available in Europe. Otherwise it seems to me like a great car.

    Thomas, we have this vehicle except it comes with body features to look more like an SUV (similar to the Volvo Cross Country). Our version only comes with 2.5 liter H4 or a 3.6 liter H6. Definitely a strange decision from Subaru top managers, only a 1.6 engine for Europe. Surely the 2.0 Turbo across the World would be a far more sensible way forward.

  • @mattmers
    @mattmers 8 лет назад

    My family has owned 2 Subaru's. I owned a 1993 Impreza 1.8l which I sold @ 200k miles on the engine but in rough shape. We recently got a 2014 XV 2.0l with the cvt. I think the cvt is okay, good for calm driving but when you start to push it, it then starts to have trouble finding a gear position and revs quite high. I would much rather have the 5 speed auto from my 2007 SAAB 9-3 which is way smoother but I get about 20-23 mpg while the XV gets around 25-28 mpg with similar driving.
    I'd say Subaru engines are pretty solid except for the 2.5L head gasket problem and the build quality overall is solid but on the cheaper side.

      +Matthew Mers I don't really understand why people have problems with cars using their rev range (aka. going into to their performance bandwith) when trying to accelerate. Thats no matter what transmission you have, lower revs = slower acceleration.

    • @mattmers
      @mattmers 8 лет назад

      I understand this, it just sits at high/medium revs too long before shifting. I'm certainly not scared to rev my saab high as that increases the turbo spool and give that car real power. But in the NA Subaru its different.

      Regarding the sensation of space , it all depends which car you were daily driving for a while before trying this one. In may case, it instantly felt too small but now i got used to it. The center console between the seat is %75 large compared to my previous car , the storage spaces in the door cards at best half larger and so on.......

    Gruss dich Thomas! Subaru sells loads of Legacy Estate here in California, we just have to pretend its an SUV, and call it an "Outback". Its a favorite here in the SF Bay Area to such a degree that its difficult to get one for less than MSRP. As far as popularity of wagons in the US, I own a Golf Sportwagen, and despite the diesel scandal I get frequent questions about it when I'm out and about.

  • @BSquare1989
    @BSquare1989 8 лет назад

    Great review!
    Here in Japan the station wagon model seems to be more popular from what I can tell. Also, Japanese love screens in their cars! :) I think they limited it in this one, but I regularly see cars with two big screens (one aftermarket) in the front. I think it's mainly for better navigation and TV. The street system doesn't work with organized street names and numbers, so no matter how basic the car, everyone needs GPS.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  8 лет назад

      +Bert Leysen very interesting, thanks! So estates in general are more popular than the sedans in .jp?

    • @BSquare1989
      @BSquare1989 8 лет назад

      +Autogefühl I don't think so. I just checked the statistics, and although there are no separate ones for sedans or hatches, last year 426,917 estates were sold over a total of 2,458,153 "passenger vehicles". For comparison "offroad vehicles" (mainly SUVs I think) were sold by the number 374,220 (close to the estates), but the biggest sale was of what they call "semi-cab wagons" (750,999). I think these are all sizes of MPVs such as a Honda Odyssey or Suzuki Lapin. These are kind of the recent replacements of traditional estates. They are terrible at cornering, since many of them are ridiculously narrow and tall, but for small roads and parking spaces they make sense I guess. The same goes for how they built houses here, often more space is used in the height.

    • @BSquare1989
      @BSquare1989 8 лет назад

      +Autogefühl By the way, I came across these sales numbers too, so I'll leave them here in case anyone is interested. In 2014 in Japan Toyota sold 1,503,879 cars, Honda 446,348, Nissan 405,437, Mazda 167,382, and Subaru 126,564.

    • @TheRacingShawn
      @TheRacingShawn 8 лет назад

      +gbriank1 Too bad. All the wagons in US have some weak points. Outback H6 is not fuel efficient. BMW 328i wagon is a little soft. V60 T5 drive e doesn't have AWD. A4 Allroad is small and on the expensive side. New A4 Avant most likely won't come to US.
      As you mentioned, Outback H6 might the best option so far... I might end up with a golf R...

    • @gbriank1
      @gbriank1 8 лет назад +2

      Xiao Zhang Depends on how big of a car you are looking for. All of the wagons mentioned, minus the Outback, are all compact. The Outback is mid-sized.
      The Golf R is in a completely different category all together. You might also want to defer judgement regarding fuel economy on the R. The government is now going to re-test all VW vehicles are emissions cheating, including gasoline engines.
      What is it that you are looking for in a car.

    • @TheRacingShawn
      @TheRacingShawn 8 лет назад

      +gbriank1 I want an AWD hatchback or wagon which is not boring to drive... Focus RS is too hardcore. I haven't driven a manual car for 5 years. I also don't think I can handle a focus RS. I like the current Forester XT powertrain. But it's too tall. R might be the only option for me...
      Actually I test drove all the cars I mentioned except the R and the upcoming RS, the H6 outback is so far my favorite...

    • @gbriank1
      @gbriank1 8 лет назад

      Subaru isn't a sporty vehicle (minus the WRX and BR-Z). Even with the Turbo 4 (Forester) or the Horizontal 6 (Outback) are in the same driving class as an Accord or Camry.
      The GTI inspired Golf R is pretty darn awesome. But, you are looking at spending $40k+. I'd also look at the X1, QX50. Sad they took away the WRX hatch. The Focus RS isn't the most reliable these days.

    Subarus are great cars. never been unhappy with mine. They could improve on their navi systems. I wish this and the VX/Crosstrek came with a larger turbo engine though. I'll stick with the leather though. My mife makes a cloth seat look like 30 years of use after only 6. stains and dirt.... yeah. Also, HEY! You're in Mainz! Just across the river from me.

    I had a subaru legacy before. I like the design of subaru, outside is very sportif, the interior design is very clean. The seats and suspension are very comfortable. But the engine is not so durable, CVT transmission is not so reactive.

    i hate station wagons, but i find this weirdly attractive - probably because it's a hybrid between a hatchback and a station wagon.
    i'd buy this if i would live in Switzerland, or Siberia, or somewhere in the mountains, but otherwise, not quite.
    Subaru should have made much fewer models, and option them with a variable height suspension, that's how you can take full advantage of the AWD.
    buying an impreza means you're afraid to take it offroad, and yet buying an XV you will give up on all the low center of gravity offered by an impreza - too bad.

    I've been curious to see an in-depth review of the Levorg, as this particular model of Subaru isn't available here in the U.S. I know that there is some interest for the Levorg in the U.S. among some Subaru enthusiasts, as it closely resembles a WRX station wagon, which is sadly no longer available. It is disappointing to discover that you found the Levorg to be not very sporty feeling, but perhaps it would better in this respect if it were to be equipped with the larger turbocharged engine coupled with a manual transmission. Your review was excellent, by the way.
    I do have a question, though. In your review, you mentioned some of the Levorg's competitors in the European market are in the mid-size category (Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mondeo/Fusion), however I was under the impression that the Levorg was a compact car. Here in the U.S., the Subaru Impreza and WRX variants are considered compact cars, and are market rivals with the Ford Focus and Volkwagen Golf. In Europe, do you feel that the Levorg is a more natural rival to the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf wagon?

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  8 лет назад

      +Eric Shea hey, thanks for your feedback. The Levorg kinda sits between the segments. It is a little bit shorter than the Passat (mid-size) but longer than the Golf (compact). Same like with the Skoda Octavia

    Thanks for the Review. we don't get this car in north america. what i noticed that subaru is pricey in Europe i don't know why?
    i can get a subaru outback 3.6R for $ 34K. you didn't mention if they offer the EYE SIGHT technology. also does it have x-mode like outback or not. i agree with you about the car engine is good, interior is good for the price. but the handling: if you gave the car a good sporty exterior it should behave like one at least the steering to be more precise. transmission: CVT AND SPORTY LOOK doesn't go with each other like the new nissan maxima and CVT come on. we buy subaru in the US for best AWD for the price and it's also very good and the car is reliable and maintenance is cheap.

    Interesting in regards of drivetrain and suspension, the car received highest marks by reviewers in Eastern European countries, while Thomas doesn't seem to like it. Well ja, he was driving boring autobahn, whereas the Czech reviewers were driving trough snow and curvy mountain roads. This Levorg (I like the name more than "Legacy") has the genes of the WRXi rally car (save the engine). Concerning cabin interior, yep, agreed, boring and nothing special but not bad either, exactly like in an Audi A4 which is considered by the Dzsörman press to have an exemplary well done interior (which is an exaggeration in the other direction).

    Subaru doesn't make any mediocre cars, but this one is not their best IMHO. I've driven an Outback for 14 perfectly happy years. Haven't even changed a lightbulb, and no repairs. But the Levorg seems like something Subaru cadged together from a great little rally car. The car I'm excited about is the new Impreza, not yet sold in Europe. I look forward to your review of it.

    Good review. But it's not a Legacy. This car is made to replace 4th generation Legacy wagon, while current legacy generation 6. As some other commenters pointed out, it's built on Impreza platform and while Europe gets its slow 1.6 version, Australia and Japan are also getting 2.0 turbo, very similar to WRX spec (don't confuse with WRX STi).
    2.0 version is definitely a much sportier car, but 1.6 would rather be a middle of the road car competing with VW golf wagon or Skoda Octavia.

    Hi thomas, nice review, thanks for this! In regards to your steering critique, I noticed in the opening segment that the car is already fitted with Winter tires. This will contribute heavily to the "schwammig gefuhl" of the steering. The standard summer tires are much more precise. I'm not sure of the caster angle is on the levorg, but subaru has been slowly increasing that over the years to improve front end grip. So that extra caster increases steering weight and self centering. How does the size of the rear cargo area feel compared to the Leon ST?

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  8 лет назад

      +Arnold Ceasar yeah that could be different with summer tyres indeed. Cargo space, interesting, you might think it is bigger in the Levorg as it is also clearly the longer car. But it is 1.450 litres for the Levorg, 1.470 litres for the Leon - so basically the same

    Hi Thomas, it is one of the best reviews on Levorg so far and I think it is partly because Levorg is a very new car. Thanks a lot. I have been driving it in Istanbul for about two months now and I should agree with you on a few points you made. I had an XV before this car and Levorg is much better on the inside in terms of quality of the materials they used. Leather trimming with blue stitching is awesome in my opinion. I don't have the prejudice you have for leather as I know we will eat those poor animals anyway so why not make good use of the skin :D. You haven't said a word about the sound system so I will do it for you. It is a piece of crap! I hate it. It was much better in XV. No bass at all, so I am replacing it with a Pioneer HU and sound quality is much much better , even with stock speakers. We do not get the Nav unit you have in Germany but still the same brand ( Clarion). I have always thought Clarion made quality stereos but I think otherwise now. As for the driving, handling and performance, good enough for me. Especially if you switch to S mode, it is a different car. Fuel economy is good. 170 HP is more than enough. I had a nice chat with one of the Subaru Turkey's representatives and he explained to me how small the European market for Subaru is and that is the reason we do not get many options. They are selling like 800,000 cars in the North American market and only 20,000 cars in the whole Europe( just 2000 in Turkey), so they do not care about us so much. I would love to drive a 2L version of this car with 300 HP. I did a test drive with Forester 2L XT ( 240HP) and boy that was a ride I will never forget. Anyways, Subaru is not a premium brand and you should drive it on snowy roads and laugh at the drivers of those so called premium brands as you pass by because they will be waiting for a toe-truck to come and save them as you drive confidently.

    I have a few issues with this car.
    1. It's expensive. Sure you get AWD and a CVT as standard, but what if I want 2WD and a manual?
    2. For the price, the interior is a little dull and the quality is just not good enough.
    3. Why can't I pick a diesel? Why can't I pick a manual? I don't like CVT!

    • @RichardJoashTan
      @RichardJoashTan 8 лет назад +2

      +ast5515 1. it is more affordable in my country
      2. You do not understand that the interior is more premium now, justifying the price.
      3. BECAUSE VW CHEATED, PUTTING A MANUAL ADDS WEIGHT AND I LOVE CVT!

    • @ast5515
      @ast5515 8 лет назад +1

      Richard Joash Tan 1. That's your country.
      2. It doesn't justify the price, because it's still not as premium as others, and it is more expensive than others.
      3. VW has nothing to do with Subaru diesels, and CVTs are not lighter than manuals.

      Petr Holubec Best AWD system? In what way exactly? It has 50-50 front-rear with 2 open diffs. How is that the best? Also, what about fuel economy, 2WD is much better when it comes to it.

    • @petrholubec279
      @petrholubec279 8 лет назад

      Yes, it's all about the passion and how the car goes and handles the corners. You can't feel the same when driving 2WD. And fuel economy? What is that? Comparing 8l for 100km with 2WD against 9,5 with 4WD? That is not the case how I look at it. It's about how you feel when driving the car and how it handles difficult situation and road conditions. Subaru's 4WD rules:-)

    It's the Americans who hate wagons not Canadians but the manufacturers lump the relatively small Canadian market in with the Americans. They figure they can just force wagon buyers to go for SUVs.
    Subaru Outback and the lower wagon always sold very well here in Canada. They seem to have cornered the market for affordable AWD vehicles.
    The key would be to align the Euro and NA markets with respect to their regulations so the manufacturers aren't forced to spend millions passing tests for each vehicle. That is, they have to pass every configuration of every model. It's just a government cash grab imo.

    Thomas, I think that the name Levorg matches the design of the car. Levorg is a Frankenstein's Monster of a name stitched together from various parts. And so is the ugly, miss-mash of design. It's like they're stitched together unrelated parts to come up with the look of the car.
    What really struck me was that rear passengers get no air flow to the rear. I didn't see any air-vents in the central section or on the B-Pillars. That would be a deal-breaker (quite apart from the horrendous styling outside and to a lesser extent, inside.

      With you buying the Levorg (😂😂😂 what a rediculous name for a car!), Subaru's sales will surely double from 1 to 2.
