SETI - The Early Years
Perhaps life on Earth was the most impossible fluke, never to be repeated in the infinity of space. But on the balance of evidence one conclusion emerges. Conditions could’ve been the same on other planets billions of years before the birth of the Earth, which is a relative latecomer to the cosmic scene, and the Universe could be teaming with life far more advanced than our own.
So what if we ever do receive a message? Whether this becomes the day the Earth stands still, or the day it goes into a flat spin, will depend on how well we are prepared to deal with it. And what about “them”, they’re certainly smart, but are they peaceful or aggressive - should we take the risk and answer back?
If they are far more advanced, it doesn't matter if we reply or not. What they do to us it's out of our hands

8429.6 Mhz lol. When this was made that would have been considered an achievement. Today one can buy a transceiver on the internet to do 10 times that frequency. Technology as time goes by is hilarious at how fast it progresses.
Why do we assume they MUST be more advanced than we are? We have sent signnals directed at other star systems already, plus we've been broadcasting radio and TV signals since the 1890's. We cannot assume they are more advanced than we are. We can call out to distant stars light decades away from us, even hundreds of light years distant, and yet we can barely reach the heliopause of our solar system in travel over 1/3 of the time we've been broadcasting into space.

There has been kind of a ladder of contacts, each step forward (up or down who knows) is shorter than the other. 1) In prehistory, 100 thousand years ago, when modern humans were achieved; 2) From sumerian to mayan, nearly 4000 years of continued contact; 3) Modern times, less than 100 years. Are we climbing up or down the ladder?

SETI is interesting but a waste of time.
We can only listen to a tiny fraction of the sky at a time so get any kind of remotely usefull coverage they listen only for a few seconds and them move on to the next bit of sky.
This means that the transmitter must have been on at a *very* exact point in the past for the signal te reach earth right at the point that SETI happens to be listening to that bit of sky.
If we have problems listning, then think about the transmitters, they have the opposite problem; trying to send a tera-watt signal to every bit of the sky, and they have to send something recognizable to all locations *AND* listen for a reply.
this is why SETI does not listen for messages, they listen for machine-sounds, which is linked to the absurd notion that all alien life is so advanced that they can build machines that harness the power of an entire star, which is required to make the kind of electromagnetic noise that we might be able to hear here.
Now comes the realitycheck: the only planet that we know to have life is earth, and of it's trillions of lifeforms only *ONE* species is sufficiently intelligent to develop radio. And we know that humans only got to exist because the dino's wher wiped out in a freak accident.
Humans have only had technology for 100 years of its billions of years of existance. And most importantly: even with our limited intelligence are reducing power consumption, we are busy avoiding the need to harness a star's power. The *ONLY* life we know of is actively avoiding doing the thing that SETI expects aliens to be busy doing.
And then there's the timeline; in order to receive a signal of any kind,it must have been transmitted exaclty long enough ago to meet earth when SETI is listening in that direction. If aliens finished their Dyson sphere 10 years earlier, we'll never hear it.
If we do receive a signal,from 500 lightyears away, will they still be listening 1000 years later? And will we after another 500?
There are more usefull ways of spending money than this.
10 million a year would feed a lot of people that are struggling in life.I mean really struggling. Do you realize there are people that are starving. Still you have your head in the clouds. How do you sleep at night?.

Because we can only listen to a tiny part of the sky for a few seconds and if the aliens just happened to not send a message at exaclty the right time, we'll never hear it.

I think this a moot question ...... They are already here I believe .... 2 of my 3 sons have had alien encounters, 1 saw an alien and the other watch a space ship so huge at first the stars had just disappeared. I think it's either aliens or a slight discourse in the universe that allows us to see another dimension at times.
