I know not everyone enjoys wiring but it looks like you enjoy it as much as I do. Simplifying it and getting back to basics is a great way to go at it and the pay off when everything works like it should is priceless! Your laugh when the turn signal works is the audible representation of that reward. I knew it when I heard it!
Thank you Adam and I agree, it’s not a fun task but it was needed in the situation. I dread wiring to be honest but keeping this simple made it so much easier to complete. Seeing everything work as it’s suppose to is such a reward imo.
@@VWJawbreaker Gary had a good time! Getting these shake down runs in and see what’s going to break and come loose. One alt bolt Hose clamp busted on oil filter .. good thing I had oil! Front wheel bearing is getting loose. Gotta charge those. Found out I hate my trimill exhaust. It moves around to much. Other than that.. 40 mph down the trails no problem. Plenty of power.
I like the modern fuse block. So much easier to deal with and locate new fuses when needed. The small turns in the rear are fine if they are legal. Don't want Levi to have police trouble when he drives his car around. I just noticed the sun roof. That's really needed in the southern summer heat. I even understood the wiring by the end of the video. Good job!
Yes sir, since the fuse block upgrade things worked so well. I really think that was his main problem and not the harness. I’m pretty sure they are legal here, we have a few years before he’ll be driving so I have time to sort that out. I could always tie them into the brake lights and go that route. The sunroof will be nice especially if I get rid of the one piece windows and add some pop outs in the back! 😎😁
Man I genuinely appreciate these wiring videos! Nobody does them (for standard beetles) and it’s really a pain finding decent explanations on how to do so, I’m restoring my 71’ and after watching these videos I think it’s time I go to a modern fuse design. Do you have any recommendations on how to clean up wiring and make it look nice? It’s got the stock beetle messy wiring going on and it’s driving me batty!! Thanks for the great video!
Thank you sir and I’m glad they are helping motivate you. For a stock harness situation, I’ve found it best to go wire by wire with a diagram next to you. Take pictures, label wires with making tape, etc to keep track of what goes where. Plus you’ll have the diagram to help guide you. The best way to learn is to get in there, worse case it’ll take quite a bit more time to get any mistakes sorted out but you’ll be learning.
Gary, I was the 116th like, a little late to the party. Good job on explaining wiring. I was always a little nervous about doing it myself but like you suggest very helpful to write it down...Dave/WBA.
You’re never late to the party, that’s the joy of RUclips… videos stay up and you want h the ones you want when you have time. Appreciate you being here as always. Yes, make a plan, write things down and make sure they make sense on paper before you get started. That way, you already know how it’s going to go and a schematic to follow.
Thanks Gary. Ha! True Words about ever project taking longer than expected Ha! Your motivating me to do something similar. Love that power probe. Might have to get me one.... or two?
Nice and clean, I like it. Much nicer using modern fuses I think too. Don't get me wrong there is a place for the OG and when they work they are great. Keep up the good work sir. Stay cool....
@@VWJawbreaker like wise Sr. I being planning on rewiring my Volkswagen beetle and I came across your video and I liked the way make everything look clean like a pro. I'm definitely gone do the same on my bug. Keep up the good work!!!
Nice work Gary! I have a similar 6 fuse block I installed in my 66(herbie) to power all my add on bs(air ride, gauges, air ride controller ect) the only downfall to that style of fuse panel is it is always hot(unless you put some kind of switch between the power post and battery) I ended up using a 100 amp breaker in between my battery and fuse panel, then for all the power outputs I ran them thru a relay if I needed them to be a key on power source
The replacement of the original 1970 T2 flasher relay with a new one works perfectly for LED bulbs. But since the spade pin connectors are not aligned I had to make short wire jumpers with a male and female spade connectors. Then make sure the jumpers are connected to the same pin connections; 31, KBL, 49 and 49a.
Hi, Garry, 🇺🇸❤️🇳🇴nice video🎥 great information on how to look into the wiring problems and the solutions, so people get a little more confidence in trying out that kind of work by their selves I picked up some new ads to put in my old brains haha. 💥☮️🌞🌞greetings Hubertus have a great day buddy

@VWJawbreaker love watching you do stuff it's been a great help even rebuild my 69 beetle engine thanks to guys like you be good lol hope your dad's OK
On your volksrod, you should do a full Brake line installation video, I’m doing it currently on my beetle and with Jbugs and almost everyone else doing a super beetle, it would be nice to see a Standard beetle getting brakes done
Glad you enjoyed it and hope it helps you out some. I haven’t done the relay yet for the high/low beams, the led beams are very bright in the low beam setting.
Thanks for this video.. Currently dealing with turn signal issues myself on my 64. You layed it out really well and made it simple and easy to follow. Going to do the same with my fuse block. Wanted to ask, was that turn signal switch out of your bug or was it aftermarket? Luv your baja!
Those turn signal lights will work well, when your break lights are on the drivers have their eyes in that area. I used an ebay panel with 6 spade fuses and 6 realys. 1 master realy, 1 for highbeam, 1for low beam, 1 for front fuel pump, 1 for rear pump and 1 for aux. Bit of a headache to wire but no high current at the dash.
Thank you sir. Hope all will work out the way it seems it will…. Just didn’t want to add lights to the engine cage. That is a good idea as well. I had my eye on something like that for the Sickxty build, maybe I’ll go that route then. Thanks!
Great video on the rewire. I am starting a '73 bug project and as usual on an older bug project, the wiring is all "jenky" so that's on my to do list. You made this seem less intimidating so thank you for doing this. Where did you get the new fuse block and relay? Love the baja!
Thank you for the kind words Keith. My 73 wiring isn’t anywhere as neat as this and looks like most everyone else’s VW’s 😂 One day I’ll get it sorted out but it works so I haven’t messed with it. As for the fuse block and relay, both came from Amazon. The relay is for led bulbs so it will work with whatever and they have different pin outs to hopefully work with your existing plug.
The original fuses are good as long as the terminals are clean and have the proper spring tension to keep contact with the fuses. However I do like modern spade fuses better and was easy on this project since the electrical was completely stripped.

Hey Gary, nice to have the wiring sorted out, great job, let's take a cruise
Thank you sir. Few more things to sort out before it hits the road.
That new fuse block is a nice upgrade. Great job explaining things, Gary👍
Thank you sir. I really think the previous owners issue was the fuse block and not the wiring. Regardless, it’s solved and all working just fine now.
Thanks for the update Gary. Was tinkering with mine. Off to a trip this weekend with my 69, flat towing it out to the desert.
