For real, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Sonic Temple, the second album after this, is a true blue rock and roll album. Love Removal Machine is a classic, I believe it came off Electric, the next album after Love.
Alternative?? lol They are a hard rock band . Look up there bio jn iTunes or Spotify Billy duffy would strangle you if he heard you called them alternative lol For instance . This structure of this song is a good old fashioned 12 bar blues riff , with Billy playing melodies on top of it . Just because the guitar had a lot of chorus and delay on it doesn’t mean it’s alternative . It’s rock . Period . Not sure where you were in the 80s , that a blues based metal band was being played in an alternative club ?
@@michaelforsythe8682 They were defiantly alternative doing the 80's, as Southern Death Cult they had a slightly different sound going on with a lot of electric percussion, its was not until their 3rd album where they really hit the rock side running. they were more part of the underground goth/ new wave thing in the UK about that time.
this was a HUGE hit in the clubs back in '85, the dance floor would immediately fill up lol. ian astbury's movement and style were singularly his, not intending to riverdance or anything, just move how the music made him feel. he did always remind me of a cross between jim morrison of the doors and steven tyler of aerosmith. he is also kinda a dead ringer to be liv tyler's twin brother imo 😄 the whole working the mic stand is the signature move of early rod stewart, starting when he was with the faces. also used a bit by john waite when he was with the babys - love the moves and them! ❤ next cult song should be "love removal machine". so glad y'all enjoyed!
I'd say this or even Love Removal Machine would be more like their signature song. But since Fire Woman was their big chart hit and it mixes both the hard rock and new wave sides of the band you might be right lol. whatever, all 3 tracks rock...Please @THIS IS IT Reactions do one on The Cult's Wolf Child Blues ...cheers from Peru
I'd argue this is their signature song which put them on the map. A lot of great music I heard before Fire Woman came out. I agree they were criminally underrated. The record labels held them back or something.
I spun vinyl in the 80’s. This song came out and wow!!! Several remixes came out that definitely made this a classic in clubs. They Ian Astbury has that voice that is unique and is one of my fav rock vocalists. Check out Wildflower
Saw the lead singer Ian Astbury singing for the Doors of the 21st century with the existing members of the Doors. He loved Jim Morrison as a musical artist and poet❤️
This is the place to start with the Cult. This was the song that generated interest in the album (“Love”) which in turn supported the next one (“Electric”), etc. Mandatory listening for the newborn Goth crowd, and you can hear echoes of this in their biggest hit: “Fire Woman”, off of “Sonic Temple”. All worth a listen. Keep Enjoying, dudes.
Ian's got a phenomenal voice, he still has it. He and Billy Duffy, the guitarist, are a team and are still touring as The Cult. People who've seen them recently say they're still kicking ass. I saw them twice in the 90s and they were so good. Ian later joined the surviving members of the Doors, and did a bunch of performances with them. No one can take Jim Morrison's place, but Ian Astbury comes the closest. We always said that in the 80s, too, before he worked with the Doors. Great reaction, guys!
I saw them last month and they just crushed it. Looked like they were really enjoying it, Ian smiled a lot. Great playlist and Ian's voice is holding up well. So glad I got to see them again.
As a boomer, I've always enjoyed The Cult. I finally got to see them a few years back. Their audio recording do not do justice to Billy Duffy's vastly underrated and underappreciated guitar playing, which I didn't realize until that night. They don't tour thru the Midwest often but if they ever are close to you, wherever you may live, they are definitely a must see and hear band.
Thanks, guys, for doing this one. I think you will also enjoy their FIRE WOMAN. As much I love seeing Ian’s slippy shoe legwork, I am enamored with Duffy’s white Gretsch guitar … she’s a big, beautiful girl. ❤
I love how you listened so intently and gave this your full attention. It's a fantastic groove from the mid-80s that is soooo underrated. A favorite to this day! I don't know who thinks they have a better song than this one - I think it's their pinnacle myself.
Well I give you guys credit for some unpredictable choices. I did not have the Cult at the top of my Bingo card for what would be next. I haven't even watched the reaction yet, but if anyone said the guitarist looks a little like Billy Idol (solely because of the hair), I actually saw the Cult open for Billy Idol live many many moons ago. So I guess they were definitely admirers.
The Cult was chaotic band - essentially 2 members Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar)... bassist Jamie Stewart left in 1990 weary of the infighting between the 2. They were an amazing hard rock band w/ a mix of The Doors ... The Rolling Stones... and AC/DC. Originally called Southern Death Cult, the band shortened it to The Cult and released their debut album 'Dreamtime' in 1984... 2nd album 'Love' was a hit in 1985 w/ the single 'She sells sanctuary'... (One of the songs on the album was titled 'Nirvana') It was supposed to be followed by a sequel album 'Peace' in 1986, but The Cult didn't like the record and refused to release it. The Cult approached producer Rick Rubin to re-do the album and he helped craft a stellar 3rd album 'Electric' in 1987, which had the hits - 'Love removal machine'... "Lil' devil"... 🔥🔥🤘🤘and it sold platinum in the US. 4th album 'Sonic Temple' was released in 1989 and became their biggest-selling album (platinum in the US again) w/ the hits - 'Fire woman' ... the ballad "Edie (Ciao baby)" 🤘🤘🔥🔥 Unfortunately, Ian Astbury's alcoholism and conflicts w/ Billy Duffy led to bassist Jamie Stewart leaving in 1990 and the next album 'Ceremony' in 1991 and 'The Cult' in 1994 fell short of commercial success... The Cult split up by 1997. In 1999, Astbury and Duffy reconciled and began touring again as The Cult... they released a new album 'Beyond good and evil' in 2001... but record label issues and internal dissent led to The Cult splitting up again by 2002. In 2006, Astbury and Duffy got together again to tour as The Cult and things were better... They recorded and released a new album 'Born into this' in 2007 and began touring successfully again, having built a solid fanbase over decades w/ their music. Since then, The Cult has released several new albums - 'Choice of weapon' (2012)... 'Hidden City' (2017) ... and 'Under the Midnight Sun' (2022)
Great reaction guys! Actually, Ian Astbury grew up in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario before moving back to England where he would form The Cult with guitarist Billy Duffy. In fact he even went to my high school, lol. Cheers!
I saw these guys open for Metallica in July 1989 in Philly when I was 19. I went in a little early to see them, and they were good. I was glad I did. Nice review as always 🙂
This and Love Removal Machine are their Best BANGER IMO - The Cult also has one of the most Gorgeous and Underrated Ballads called REVOLUTION - Def Reaction Worthy!
This group has some more really good songs [Spiritwalker, Love Removal Machine, Wild Flower, Fire Woman, Edie, Sweet Soul Sister, Wild Hearted Son] and others.
I would give the song "Love Removal Machine" or "Lil Devil" a go. That's from their next album, it's a little more rocking. Most people will lead you to "Fire Woman", which is where most people jumped on.
Fun fact: there was a time when the Cult's Ian Astbury was considered to be the singer for the Doors when the remaining members wanted to tour. Apparently after meeting him they thought he was an a hole...
I saw The Cult when they opened for Metallica in 1989 and they were very good live. Their studio recordings don't do them justice in my opinion. I barely knew who they were when I saw them so it was an unbiased reaction much like you guys!
This one is good, but there were others that you should have listened to first maybe: Love Removal Machine, Aphrodisiac Jacket, or even Fire Woman, to get a better sense of who they are.
Man you gots to check out the album Sonic Temple that album is sick!! He also about 15 yrs ago did some covers of the doors and man he sounded like Jim Morrison
Big, very big in the mid to late 80's. Acid culture rock....Awesome. But,as a drummer..that thick coat he's wearing...sheeesh....sweating just seeing that!
Just wait until you get to "Love Removal Machine". OMG that's a BANGER.
The drummer lays down some fat af snare and bass… full of off beats. As @mokumboi19 says… a straight up banger.
Fire Woman
For real, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Sonic Temple, the second album after this, is a true blue rock and roll album. Love Removal Machine is a classic, I believe it came off Electric, the next album after Love.

Billy Duffy rocking the White Falcon.
Ah the good old days!!! Filled the alternative dance club floor!
as did Ministry

Wonderful Song
Criminally Underrated Band
The Cult’s Signature Song is “Fire Woman”
Amazing song!

"Fire Woman" is their big hit.
Yes, but this is their best song.
One of the best songs ever recorded.
Amen.
Love The Cult. So many great tunes! Love Removal Machine, Fire Woman, Rain, Wildflower.
FACTS 👍👍
The cult is an underrated band. They have lots of great songs.
Ian Astbury toured with the remaining members of the Doors, it was awesome
One of my all time favorites regardless of genre.
I was into my New Wave / Synth Pop era in the 80s but this Song is complete FIRE!
You need to react to The Cult’s (Fire Woman) Video .. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I spun vinyl in the 80’s. This song came out and wow!!! Several remixes came out that definitely made this a classic in clubs. They Ian Astbury has that voice that is unique and is one of my fav rock vocalists. Check out Wildflower

My friends band payed this song at high school talent show
1986
Good Times !
There were some great extended dance remixes of this tune when it first came out.
The Brits loved their 12" vinyl singles.
8:12 Howling Wolf Mix is superb!!
@@frbyrd-tg5co And a stripped down "Assault on Sanctuary" version, one by Butch Vig ... and a drum and bass-y banger "Dog Star Rising" mix by Youth.

@@lesran So amazing, thanks for the update on how they're doing right now! Must've been so much fun.
Mark Brzezicki, also of Big Country, is on the drums. This is one of The Cult's signature songs.
I didn't know he was their drummer. After Big Country I knew him only as the drummer for Pete Townsend's solo projects.
"Love Removal Machine" is the one for me. That was the first song I remember from The Cult. I was in high school and it just rocked.
As a boomer, I've always enjoyed The Cult. I finally got to see them a few years back. DJing in indie clubs back in the day this song filled the dance floor EVERY TIME!
Saw this on MTV when it first aired in the early 80's, went out immediately and bought the cassette.

Ian and Billy are still touring with the same power. Underrated front man and vocalist for sure.
Any song off the albums "Love" or "Sonic Temple" are amazing.

This song exuded power.
One of the great riffs .
Saw them two years ago. Great show, but my ears will never be the same.
This entire album is magical
Good memories!🙂😎
The Cult - Love Removal Machine - Fire Woman - Lil Devil - Wild Flower - Rain
This is a BOP!!! Looooove them!
Some songs seem louder than others when played at the same volume level and this is definitely one of them
Brilliant classic rocker
Try Wildflower, Love Removal Machine, New York City, Rain, Fire Woman, Sun King … The Cult has many bangers! 🖖🏼

“🔥 Fire Women “ ❤😂
"Fire Woman" is the one you need to hit, although I always liked this one, too. Great front man and solid band.
Great track. Their first album 'dreamtime' is fire...but forgotten..

The Cure, The Cult. No problem, they are both similar look and good!

Mark Brezicki from Big Country on drums there.

They are a different genre with each album. Goth, Post-Punk, Rock, Hard Rock, Grunge, Alt-Rock. They like to mix it up.
Fire Woman and Love Removal Machine are two others u should also react to
Very hard to not drive faster (and enter a "flow state") listening to this song.
Fuckin' river dancing
Time to bring in some W.A.S.P.
If you like that try Wildflower or here comes the rain again Love Removal Machine is another they are all good
