- On January 6, 1994, New Yorkers were introduced to this mysterious thing called a MetroCard. We all carried subway tokens then, and while some people were excited about the new card, they needed lessons in how to use it! The anchor introducing the report is Diana Williams, and the reporter is Tim Fleischer.

Before they phase out the MetroCard completely they should bring back that retro blue and yellow look for one last hurrah.
That'd be dope
They'd also probably be more expensive like the supreme ones
Lilly James I don’t get the supreme fad.
True but soon we going to start using tags or just the credit card there is a train station that I could use my smart watch to pay the fair is really cool.
ULTIMATEMANNY Yeah, can’t wait for all stations to have that!
When the subway ride was $1.25
Yeah, way cheaper
That's like the half-fare now. For the elderly and disabled people.
@@ddrdanganvloger2187 Yea I wish, those days are over… Thanks to inflation
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
median rent was $600.
I’m more amazed that the silver turnstiles design seem to be relatively unchanged for nearly 30 years
The card readers and all look exactly the same😂
"if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Lol that’s why when foreigners come to America, they say everything in the USA is so “cute” cuz it hasn’t changed since 1900. Like going back in time to their parents time or their own childhood lmao it’s a diss 😂
That’s because they’re exactly the same. The only changes made to them were sealing up the token slots, and adding OMNY readers.
1953: Token
1994: Metrocard
2019/2020: OMNY
1960: token
That make sense.
@Alex McCaffery thank you i fixed it
2030 Bitcoin
2050: Barcode
Why the mta worker screaming at people’s faces like that 😂
Might've been to make sure people didn't get confused over how much they'd bought on their cards -- this was still new technology then and they still had bugs to work out. Not to mention the line visible in the footage....
anabell cruz, 1994 was a much different time than today, many people didn't have internet back then, TVs were bulky, non-HD and VHS tapes were used to watch & record movies and TV shows via a VCR.
@@Richard-pf5xs that's crazy like what bout cable TV
I mean really. He was speaking into the microphone to the guy who was right next to him 😂
@@TXnine7nine Have you traveled the subway in the 80s or 90s...just look at the footage...the amount of people and noise that was happening back then , I'm sure the megaphone was used so people could actually hear the guy....just think about how much you would appreciate it, especially today where everyone speaks so under their breath like they are scared to project.
1:14 Remember when the MTA actually offered that real monthly discount?
Whats worth mentioning is the gates havent changed since 1994.
Yeah they just tacked on the omny readers
And it's being replaced by OMNY...
I don't l like OMNY much very confusing
@@ArrowIIIRailfan if omny is confusing then you must not have graduated
@@TheLunzDen I dont have credit card and im a middle schooler😑
@@TheLunzDen shut up
@@ArrowIIIRailfan I wonder how they will address Student Metrocards with the OMNY system. Will it be Student OMNY cards given to students or some Student App Pass the OMNY system grants access to.
I feel like these “metro cards” will be really helpful can’t wait
Sarcasm detected or time traveler
And within just 25 or so years, MetroCards will now be getting replaced too. But man it sucks I was born so late. I never got a chance to use the tokens. 😭
Hahaha I was probably born.. but too young at the time to remember using tokens on the train,
You ant miss nothing
I remember using tokens. It wasn’t anything too memorable. The Metrocard was so much better than using tokens.
BEING BORN IN 1984 I HAVE A LOT OF MEMORIES BUYING A $10 10 PACK OF TOKENS FROM THE TOKEN BOOTH AND USING THE LEFTOVER TOKENS TO BUY STUFF AT THE STORE!!(THE TOKENS HAD A STREET VALUE OF $1 EACH) I MISS THE TOKENS WHEN THE METROCARD WAS INTRODUCED NOW I DON'T LIKE THAT OMNY IS ABOUT TO REPLACE THE MERTOCARD BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE HAS A PHONE THAT HAS NEC CAPABILITIES OR A DEBIT CARD ACCOUNT!!
Sorry 😐😔
Who knew the first station to introduce the metrocard would be the first to implement omny
One of the first not thee first 🙄
That station is first is because a cross the street from 2 Broadway, MYA Headquarters.
I'm gonna miss the Metrocard 😭.
The blue ones didn’t have the free transfers in them initially.
I love using MetroCards when going to college every day : )
Crazy people really used tokens to the early 2000s
Yep! Even my mom used them until they were completely phased out. She said they were easier to use than the MetroCard. 😅
Yep there was a looooong grace/transition period-nine years!-between the first public use of Metrocards (January 6, 1994) and the last day of token use (April 13, 2003 when token sales stopped; token use stopped on May 3, 2003 on the subway, December 31, 2003 on buses). The Metrocard is due to be phased out in 2023, 30 years after it was first used as a limited test on June 1, 1993. Maybe June 1, 2023 will be the last day of the Metrocard? In any event, it will not be a nine year transition, more like four.
Good ol days 😭😭
@@professional.commentator absolutely easier. i hated the metrocard. the token felt great , it dropped down and you knew it was working, ka-klink and go through.
@Bored Kiddo wasn’t really crazy. It was actually very convenient.
I like the old blue ones better than the current yellow ones.
They should get hard plastic ones like they have in Australia or Korea.
Yeah they should but some train station use tags or debit cards scanner.
ok Jnlt OMNY will provide this in 2021.
Philly has debit card Mastercard bus passes, never get bent & u can tap em. & it doubles as a prepaid debit card in stores.
Oh.. how the times has changed.
R32’s were much brighter ☹️
Now we're using OMNY.
Whats that?
@@Seek147. it’s a new Payment to enter the subway, right now, OMNY is only accepting Credit cards, in the future, there will be something called an OMNY card, it will replace the Metro Card. Metro cards will be phased out in 2023
@@pubggamer2022 that's crazy
Welcome to the future of MTA usages.
and to think that today, we're preparing to ditch the MetroCard altogether in favor of the phone/supercomputer that the majority of people carry everywhere they go. the world is crazy
Less plastic ig
This lasted 26 years and still being used
1:14 I hope the MTA does the same with OMNY.
1:08 did he really need to use the blowhorn to talk to a lady 6 inches away?
LMAO! immediate burst of laughter. youre right. thank you, i needed that, stranger.
I just realized them blue ones were fire 🔥
Wait, where are the omny readers??!??!?
@LeafyisGone lol it was a joke
Wow.
No covid-19 back then 👍
N we had a real mayor
I'm going to miss it
now we have OMNY lol
Wow it 30 years ago 😳 metro card came out 1994
*26 years
26 year ago I couldn't get time it long time i sorry though 30 but possible 26 year .??
@@clintonsylvester9429 thanks for help me it hard to remember
Yea because 30 years ago was 1990
@@michealguillen8496 no problem it happen to me too sometimes
My parents didn't use metro cards until 2000 and thats when we got student metro cards
This is what video looked like when i was a kid
Here comes OMNY
I forgot that monthly pass and day pass didn't exist, remember paper transfers LOL
Back in the days,
1994....Wow..I’m getting old
There were still using tokens into the late 90s.
@Alex McCaffery okay cool. I forgot the exact Date when they completely phased out. So thanks. I just remember having a hand full of tokens in my pocket anytime we went to the subway.
May 3rd, 2003, was the last day for tokens on the subway, December 31st, 2003 on buses.
30 years have passed by and most of the stuffs we see here are still the same, that's includes metrocards and turnstiles.
No card? No problem just wait for someone to open the emergency door and you just beat the system
lmao based comment
Then they introduced OMNY than what's next?
ID reader?
So it can send the total bill to your house each month?
Exactly what E-ZPass does to those without registered accounts.
bar code tatoos are coming.
What are the nail ladies gonna do without the metrocrads to remove the paint? a sad day…
What do they mean by token wasn't it quarters
Nope
no it was a token. look on youtube 'nyc tokens' to see the designs. a much simpler time. loved it
I prefer tokens.
Don’t worry. A physical OMNY card will be your token.
@@TheRailLeaguer
I’ll miss metrocards. But I’m sure that Metrocards and Omny shall co-exist like tokens and metrocards did for a very long time. Most of all I hope the coin option on local buses don’t phase away. They’re useful for when you forget your card.
@@42luke93 There will be a 2 year overlap between the time the physical OMNY card is released and when the MetroCard is phased out.
@@TheRailLeaguer
So right now there is no omny card but the devices can be used by wireless devices such as a credit card or phone.
@@42luke93 The physical card will come out in 2021, but as of now, its contactless card and digital wallet. Works like how you use these options at the store.
Irony for the Metro-cards. Knowing that this was 1994 the beginning of the Metro-cards. To now in 2023 the ending of Metro-Cards.
Wow $1.25 per ride at that time.
I miss tokens
Today: OMNI is now accepted at all stations. Unlimited passes coming soon.
yEAh bUT WhATS A TOken?!
new OMNY card 2021 lookin at this video like 😏…
/Bklyn👑
The phrase "straphanger" pisses me off
I have a rare mta token
Now in 2022 there will be no more metro cards
Metro Cards have been around since 1994?! I thought they’ve been around since the 70’s.
Metrocards came out in 1993.
I didn’t know that MetroCards came out in 1993 that was a year before I was born.
WHO WATCHING 10 2020?
And then there where omny
That MTA Card was a waste to use back then.
That was what my local station used to look like almost 30 years ago? Ugly
At least metrocards didn't charge people twice for 1 fair. Don't use omny
oh look the service from the MTA and the platforms are as bad, and dirty as in 1994, and guess what you are all paying so so much more for it....WHY?
What?
JeremiahC99 the subways system hasn’t changed or improved since this video was made. In fact it’s gotten much worse. And they’ve nearly doubled the fare
jo Huh?
The mta people dont care for the people take the subway and the bus no good serivce not at all.yes mta people have to go work every day and night time .same mta people is ok.
Boooooo
