I was wearing a 90s slappy mask and I was holding my slappy dummy and when he saw me he went “haha! Oooohhh no…” 😂 I was worried I made him mad but he was actually amused and when I asked him to sign my slappy dummy he was hesitant and said “you want me to ruin a perfectly good dummy?!” But in the end he signed the dummy, my mask and a couple of my favorite goosebumps books. He was so nice and I can’t believe I held myself together and when I walked away, that’s when I broke down and started crying tears of joy. I’ll cherish that day for the rest of my life. I'm so glad R.L. Stine is finally having some spotlight. I still have my pile of Goosebumps books, they were a drug as a kid. The love for reading and horror came from those books, no question about it. Those covers sparked my imagination. Thanks, Jake. Great interview as always.

I read Harry Potter later in highschool. But R.L Stine? This dude was the first author I ever read and was fully invested in. I remember my auntie saw me reading "The Haunted Mask' and asked me if I liked Goosebumps and I told her that I loved it. The next time I saw her, she gave a whole box filled to the brim with her Goosebumps collection because she was a middle school teacher and she left Goosebumps books for her kid to borrow and read for English class
This was my first time seeing an interview with Mr Stein. I was always too scared to read his books. I have to say though, this was a really great interview. Host did a wonderful job being respectful and excited around someone that clearly had a large impact in his own life, while still letting the host talk and tell their own stories.
The man is a legend alongside writers like Roald Dahl, Maurice Sendak, and Beverly Cleary. He introduced 60s and 70s horror pastiche to children who were looking for something with an edge, with a bite.
I am pushing 40 and I recall that time. I love RL. I got into horror due to RL. Really, he just did great with the book. Look super high art his book are not, but they are awesome. Beast from the East was my favorite. He has a wonderful sense of humor and doesn't take himself to seriously.

I was writing a book years ago called "The Big Book of Messed Up Stuff" to put it censored. I somehow ended up with R.L.'s email. I asked him for an interview and he kindly denied me that interview because he was in the middle of writing three books. I interviewed many people, but it never came off the ground because that was a crucial part of my life. It's okay though. He was very kind and was very busy. I was just happy he emailed me back, even if it wasn't him I felt I connected to a part of my childhood. Little me was very happy that day.

It's both encouraging and scary to know that in order to hot RL Stine levels of success (or to even come within the vicinity of his success), you're going to have to get serious and start putting pen to paper a lot more than you're used to. Most writers grind away at a single story, and Stine has an insane output while working on 3 at one time. I'd bet he treats his writing life like a rigid day in the office, with strict hours set aside for each project and more time set aside for business matters.

Every kid in the 90's loved these books, I remember trading them almost like trading cards when I was in elementary school.
