Do rebound relationships last? Of course SOME of them do, but rebound relationships, by far have a very bad reputation of crashing in a dramatic and catastrophic way.
Why is that?
The reason why is because of emotional unavailability.
Immediately after a breakup pretty much everyone is at least temporarily emotionally unavailable.
And because of this, most rebound relationships are started from a poor emotional foundation.
Instead of being based on an organic connection that naturally develops between two people, these relationships are built on ideals and expectation.
Do rebound relationships work out long term? It's possible, but the emotional connection must develop organically.
There is also a high level of displacement that happens in a typical rebound relationship, where the relationship is "fast forwarded" to look like the level of commitment that existed in the previous relationship.
This results in a lot of people getting in over their head too soon, too fast. And when you realize that you're swimming in the deep end with someone who you may not even be compatible with, that is a recipe for problems.
Plus, as the emotional availability starts to come back to the people involved in the relationship, it can challenging to listen to someone deal with their issues about their ex and their breakup. This can result in feelings of jealousy, insecurity, and resentment. ("Why do you talk so much about your ex all the time? Are you still in love with them?")
This is a challenging situation for a lot of people to be in, and because of this, many rebound relationships just end up doing what many troubled relationships do... They end in a breakup.

Hey Clay, My ex broke off our 10 year relationship in February. She began dating someone she barely knows. She married the rebound in April in a shocker of a wedding. My ex went into a relationship with someone who looks similar to me. And had her start up an It company, I work in IT. And it seems like he is trying to create a better version of me. She has never held a leadership position in her life, and has never worked in IT. And there is more…. I just feel embarrassed to have been with him. He is like a child.

Dating should be considered as a way to get a feel on how it is to be with the person, knowing if their values are aligned with what we want in a healthy relationship and you can later decide if both of you is a good match. I have a friend who got out messy divorce back in September 2015, then got engaged in January 2016, then got married in September 2017, now she has been separated for 7 month but 6 months ago, she decided to jump into another relationship with a Venezuelan guy whom she just met, talking about fun, sweet, and kind he is, wanting him to teach her his culture. Now, she does not know him at all.

I just ended a relationship with a woman because she spent so much time talking about the ex. I almost thought he was sitting next to me most of the time. I told her she’s not emotionally available and needs time to heal. She blocked me on her phone and all social media accounts as if me telling her this was untrue.

Me and my ex broke up in April but less than a month later started dating each other and being intimate. She was also dating other people but we kept dating, being intimate a couple of times a week, and right up until Breile weeks ago she was saying I love you, talking about kids, engagement rings etc. then quite suddenly she emailed me and said that we should stop seeing each other and that she’s moved on. My ex broke up with me in June and found someone a month later and now they are thinking of moving in with each other but I know it’s not gonna last because she tells me to go away when she asked one of my friends what I’m up to and how I’m doing which is a clear sign she wants me back and wants to know what I’m doing. Since our breakup I haven’t tried to date anyone because I still love my ex. So it’s extremely difficult to forget about her.

We broke up in sept.. were together almost 2 years and started looking for a house together.. not even a month after the breakup which was sudden, he was with my now ex friend of 30 something years! I am sorry to hear about the divorce. For now, focus on healing yourself first and having clear communication with her for the kids' sake.
Focus on yourself first and once you get to heal and improve on your issues- you can work on getting emotionally connected to her again even as a friend to begin with.

Hi Clay. Hope you see this and can answer my question: Is it possible for someone to go from rebound to rebound? When I met my ex, he was fresh out of a divorce after being married for 15 yrs. We had a 2 year relationship and when things started to get serious, things started to go downhill and he broke up with me. Less than 3 months after our breakup, I learned that he was in a relationship with a co-worker. He said it was weird how quickly it happened and it wasn’t planned. Was I a rebound to his marriage and is he now moving on to another rebound? What are the odds that he is still emotionally unavailable in his new relationship?
I’m in a similar position except he’s not dating anyone yet. Yes we are definitely rebounds. Mine was with his ex for 17 years, married for 14 with three kids. Love bombed me and some future faking, treating me like a therapist. He still texts me every day, try to arrange meetings but covertly. Some FaceTime calls. FYI he broke up with me but he also won’t let go of me. He’s Fearful Avoidant and so am I. If either of us dated right now it would be a rebound as well because we’re clearly not over it

What if the person my ex hooked up with 2 weeks after our break up is, extremely emotionally insecure and sensitive & doesn't handle stress or conflicts well (which she has told me he is) is the ending of their relationship heightened to end faster than a rebound relationship without these factors??
Willis, getting your ex back will not depend on how long they stay with their rebound or how fast the rebound relationship will end. Even if it ends right away, there's no guarantee that she'll get back to you. It will depend on you taking the right actions to show her that you have the capacity to give her the love she needs.
My ex dumped me because she wanted to do things for herself, by herself and needed to be alone. She also didn’t see a future with me despite us having plans to get married and buy property. Fast forward 6 weeks since breakup and no contact, I shoot her a txt to say how are you, hope you’re doing well. I got no response, which was fine and expected, and from that I just gathered that it was too early to reach out so I left it. Fast forward 2 days after I sent the txt and I get a txt from her telling me to stop asking her how she is (I asked once) she was moving on with someone else and was happy, and doesn’t want to have anything to do with me. This rebound is 19 years old and my ex is 37. She kinda looks like me, my ex likes chubby chicks so I guess we have that in common. But where the ‘future’ is in this union, I’m not sure 🤔

That happened to me twice by my ex husband. He cheated on me (he had a secret addiction issue the last year of our marriage which coincided with the affair. He left me and our son. That affair relationship lasted 7 years (2010-2017.) We got back together in 2020 for 6 months. I discovered him using again. I put him in detox and then rehab. He got out and said he didn’t have any feelings for me and 2 weeks later discovered he had been seeing an addict in her 20’s. He’s 46.

I was with my boyfriend for a year, he ended it and 2 weeks later he is sleeping with a girl that lives 2 streets away from me and has to drive past my road to get there bearing in mind he stayed at my house every night faced with sleeping at his parents house he’s found this. It could be. But the main thing to gauge if we jump into a rebound is to ask ourselves if we have fully healed from the past breakup before getting into a new one. Sometimes, it's only us can tell that and not anyone else. We can project how happy we are but the truth in one's emotions can only be answered by the person itself.

it may be possible. But each person has their own unique pace when it comes to healing. So there's no exact timeframe for the grieving and healing process. But it depends on the level of acceptance of the person over the situation.

HI Deborah, as you know, people get into a rebound as they feel that being in a new relationship will help them lessen their distress. I understand that if you feel hurt but then it's something that you cannot have full control of. But what you can do is to be in acceptance and be okay with his life choices.

If you're just trying to emotionally get past what he did, then the key here is to learn to differentiate between what he did and the meaning your mind is trying to make out of how it relates to you. The truth is that what he did only tells you about him, and it is very unlikely a reflection on you.
What is your thoughts if they are rebounding with a friend they knew and had a close relationship with to begin with as opposed to a stranger they just met? She left me and within a week or two was already seeing someone else.

Clay Andrews yes someone that she works with and already had a friendship with. The evidence is on social media, their pics of them together. It hurts because it makes me wonder if she left me specifically for him. If she was able to move from one person to another that fast maybe she never valued our relationship as much as l thought. Do rebounds usually work when they already know each other and have some sort of emotional connection to begin with?

I have a qustion about what to do when my ex is in a rebound. He is 52 and i am 47, We were together for 3 years and he broke up in december. It was a "nice" breakup, no drama, no begging ect from my side. In january he wrote to me that he is seeing some one else. I wished him all the best. And then i did no contact. I really love him and for the first time i thought that i meet a man who i want to live my life with and i still have the same feelings for him. He had reached out on text to me 6 or 7 times since January and i have answered him nicelly every time, no begging, no neediness and I kept it short. This monday he reached out again and asked me to meet up for coffee. I am going to Dubai for 10 days so i promised him that i would write to him when i was home again. Then thuesday he post a romantic picture whit him and he's new girlfriend on facebook. NOW my question what to do???? Should i write to him after my vacation or should i let him contact me again? Is it a bad idea meeting up whith him when he has i new girlfriend. Should i tell him that i cant meet up just being his friend and drink coffe once in a while. Or should i just meet him for coffee have i good time and see where things are going

Marlene, what do you want? Do you want to keep in contact with him? If so, then try meeting up for coffee. He is likely in a rebound relationship, which will come with it's own set of problems, but you must stay anchored in what YOU want for yourself.
