What prevents the positive particle from falling into the black hole, which would increase its mass? Wouldn't both kinds of particles fall into the black hole at the same rate, preventing a change in mass?

The term 'dark' when used to refer to the far side of the Moon is meant in the 'hidden' or 'unknown' term of the word. People knew the Moon was a globe since ancient times.
