Macron is correct to infer that telling your enemy you will not interviene is a moronic way to carry on (I'm looking at you Germany). Strategic ambiguity costs nothing and can have a deterrent effect. Whether Macron is doing this for the right reasons is less obvious... there's nothing like talking up a war to distract from your political unpopularity.

Yes, Macron can use it as a red scarf to draw attention elsewhere. On the other hand, this is his last term in office, and he won't have any electoral deadlines, so there's nothing to lose there. If he can create uncertainty in the camp opposite, why would he deprive himself from this opportunity?

If this was even primarily an American perspective, there would be scathing hate for de Gaulle and his actions towards driving nearly all anti colonialist movements towards the Soviet Union. Although he is generally respected, he has a mixed reputation in the US for colonialist reasons.

Yup, I caught that one too and it raised me off of the couch to comment. WW1 he was sadly mistaken about France surrendering. The opposite was true. What should be the right strategy for France now? I'm struggling to figure out what my own nation's (US) strategy should be. It can be quite convoluting and lots of gray area. Both of our nations are struggling to preserve their own identities. Anyways I think you have cool commentary and I look forward to checking out more of your history uploads. "Lafayette we are here". I'd say that you have a solid purchase on history and current affairs and part of me is with you, on the other hand, American and western policy I believe are partly at fault for passive aggression and posturing closer to Russia's border over the decades than were agreed upon, causing the Kremlin to get quite concerned too. I don't condone Putin's invasion but it's complicated and could have been avoided if the US chose a different path. Unfortunately we are where we are at today and it's scary especially for you European nations. It's a sad state of affairs, while I agree with most of what was said,in the video, there's lots of other things that haven't been said, the use of chemical weapons, poisons put in water supplies, destruction of food chains, they touched on the shell supplies a bit.
It's really sad,but all you can do is strengthen your country an fighting force.
The really sad part is,our country's don't care about the people, they never have,an the people are the ones who will suffer, during a war, while the elites will be sheltered in bunkers.
I feel really sad about the people, the weapons we have nowadays, well it just doesn't beer thinking about,so many young will die,for what nothing.

This seems noticeably better than "History Legend". There is enough 'meat' that I'll need to watch again. I am a fan of local manufacturing of military equipment. It provides jobs, and reduces the money a country 'bleeds' if it goes to war. I hadn't realised France had run down it's submarine force so far. Four seems too fragile. I'm fine with multi-country collaborations developing military hardware. Development costs seem to grow for every project. So spreading those 'Non-recurring engineering' (NRE) development costs over as many end-products as practical makes sense.
However, I diverge from the way it works in practice. I think each country should be allowed to manufacture the entire product for their own use (if they want to). So, for example, it might have made sense for the UK, France, Germany and Poland to collaborate on developing new tanks for their own use, and jointly for export.
France having much less dependence on other countries (than most countries) for energy is a strategic master stroke. I can't think of any benefit to energy dependence. I assume France has a large stockpile of nuclear fuel.
While it might not have helped in practice, I felt the UK should have aimed to make North Sea gas last at least twice, and preferably much longer, than it did. My view was based on long-term energy security. Cynically, it seems to make sense to use a potential enemy's natural resources while they are amenable, and conserve ones own.
Invading Iraq does not seem to have reduced the worlds problems. AFAICT, the *_ONLY_* beneficiaries are films/movies/tv, who have an easy, plausible sounding 'enemy', the military/industrial complex who have significant, predictable income, and government politicians who distract voters from their political failures, or beat opponents on their Iraq-war-actions.
Best Wishes to You and Monsieur Hubert. ☮
I'll encourage you and Monsieur Hubert to watch: _That Mitchell & Webb Look - Nazi Sketch (English subtitles)_ ruclips.net/video/SMMwoxGWjJI/видео.html It asks an interesting question about the 'common soldier', and the sketches 'punchline' poses another question about how the Nazis reacted in practice. Not a pleasant thought.

Thank you for your comment, as always it is a pleasure to read you!
It was way better than HL of course, and I really appreciated this video. What I especially liked is that most of it was common sense: saying that a less militarized world is actually a good thing might sound naive, but it's one of the most reasonable things to say.
Having a military-industrial complex and ensuring autonomy in defense are vital for any country and alliances should be used to complement these efforts, to create synergies, but not to replace domestic capabilities.
The Iraq war is a catastrophe on every level in my opinion, it has profoundly destabilized the region. But on the other hand, having lived through the attacks of 2015, I tend to be more lenient towards the desire for revenge that the United States had to go through (this leniency does not extend to the leaders).
Thank you for your recommendation, Hubert and I will watch it with great pleasure 😃

@@ToonStory-fh4gn I was living and working in the USA when the World Trade Centre was attacked. I was a little bit late to work that day, so I took a taxi. I could hear the radio giving weird and confusing reports of a plane hitting one of the towers. When I arrived at work our office building seemed deserted. As I went to my office, I found an office packed with colleagues. They were watching a small portable black and white TV. The second tower had been hit, so it was no longer an accident. We watched. It was horrific. Eventually, late morning, our public address system said we should all go home.
I actually had a work-friend who's office was in one of the towers. I was frantic for a day trying to contact him. Fortunately he was working from home that day.
So I have always felt a lot of sympathy with trying to get revenge.
However, I feel the war in Iraq was a diversion which, with the benefit of 20:20 hindsight, made matters worse.

@@ernstwiltmann6 Thank you for following up. I don't know the term "flutter current". I vaguely feel I have heard it decades ago in connection with a colleague's pace maker research. So I'm guessing that has nothing to do with your definition.
I am slight;y aware of LNG terminal emissions. The UK does import LNG, but AFAIK reduced imports from Russia in favour of the Middle East when Russia invaded the Ukraine.
The UK government is supporting house owners to fit heat pumps. AFAIK Air Source. Which isn't ideal.
The cost of energy has had significant impact on businesses. I am amazed that companies like Bosch, Siemens and BASF are moving out.
Unsurprisingly, our Tory government would prefer to leave "the market" to sort things out. Having "privatised" the Energy sector, they 'lost' control of some of the "control levers" and like most politicians they don't want to have responsibility and attract blame.
However, it was forced to cap domestic energy price rises.
      Thanks again

However the GPS on the Russian subs can be faulty sometimes and they accidentally end up in Scotland or Ireland, one of these days they might accidentally surface near Toulon, so you may wish to keep all those subs, just in case.

I don't understand this idea of sending ground troops. Unlearned lessons will always be more painful to relearn the hard way. We(NATO) won a war against Serbia in 1999, without losing a single casualty with a technology gap that has grown tenfold WITHOUT using ground troops. Why isn't that the blueprint? We brought their fascist criminal president to the Hague, and that country is now much better off for it. But you'd never know it it seems. It's as if NATO completely forgot about that war. I can think of but one person who would like the west to forget about that war that was over in little over a month.

I found this very insightful. Self determination supported with a strong independent military is an enviable position for any nation. France is a serious military force within the European continent and whereas I'm not convinced by President Macron's 'boots on the ground,' proposal I do applaud the increasing French/ European view that Ukraine needs all that we can give to win this war. My biggest concern however is the lack of political self determination within the EU. Yes as a Brexiteer I would say that wouldn't I. I' m ex military myself and would fight side by side with the French in this case but I fear the bigger Euro political landscape post war. The political leverage and cajoling from the EU post war would be unbearable for me. We can certainly support each other fully case by case in future to defend our values but it doesn't have to become compulsory. Self determination, the right to choose, that's what the free nation requires. Thank you monsieur for putting this fascinating and appropriate vid out. 👍

People who are against it are very vocal about it, which means that you guys “who don’t know how you feel about it” are closeted war supporters/interventionists. Having that said, I hope that if God forbid, French troops are sent to Ukraine, which then results in a larger scale war, you sir are going to be one of the volunteers, rather then continuing your fight behind your keyboard and camera.

      Thank you for your comment.
Just because you're not vocal doesn't mean you don't have an opinion.
Just because you're the loudest speaker in the room doesn't mean you're the only to have one opinion.
I'm wary of people who speak loudly and of definitive opinions.
When I say I don't know, it's because I don't know and I'm wondering. I'd be grateful if you wouldn't invent an opinion for me and if you'd respect what I'm saying: I'm like the silent majority, overwhelmed by what's going on.

@@ToonStory-fh4gn I’m sorry if my posture offended you, that wasn’t my intention at all, neither did I mean to speak for you. Personally I believe that not having an opinion or as you mentioned in the video “not being sure how you feel” about such an important matter like potentially going to war against the major power is rather impossible, you’re either against it or you’re in for it. Being “not sure” is a very convenient position, giving you the freedom to appeal to the both sides and also avoid the responsibility if the things go bad. I personally believe that all of us who are taking part in this debate/discussion should take a clear position and then back it with some arguments. That is a responsible thing to do, when the matters of such importance are at stake, which reflects the personal integrity of an individual.

@@soniasussmann6480 No problem, you didn't offend me and I found your comment respectful. Thank you for developing your point of view, I understand your comment better. Maybe we don't have the same way of understanding situations like this, simply because our personalities are different? I can see the value of what you're saying. My way of expressing my integrity is to step aside and ask questions, it's just who I am. And that's why I talk about this situation on my channel, even if I get hateful comments (not yours, of course) and am sometimes insulted, at least we talk. Greetings from Lyon, France :)

i read your comments (both) and disagree in some point/view:
people who are "against it are very vocal" understand what they lose or what happen next. people who are "for it" have illusions from old pre2022 world order (or even 2003).
simple people usually do not think about consequences from government decisions until it strike them hard. One thing to consider "it's just rhetoric bias", another thing is to consider it "really happens. shit!!!". such transformation demand time.

I'm sorry but I really don't care if it comes from French, British, American or any other nations politicians; when you start throwing words like 'cowards' around this can only end very badly for all concerned. The reasons behind this conflict are complex and manifold and go back decades. Someone needs to look for ways to deescalate, not escalate this conflict.

Since 1990s Russia is splited into parts like France on Northern and Southern during WW2. Ukranian part of Russia is under occupation of the prowestern Galitsian nazi. Ukranians are Russians which were seized by Austro-Galitsians - nation which stollen the name of Ukranians (Cossacks) in 20th century and especially took power after partition of USSR. Ukraine is the late secondary name (since era under the Polish crown) or just hostile nickname of ancient (Kievan) Russia, most historical part of Russia. So called Ukraine is the land in which Russia was born, it was Russia for 1000 years. Now the original Russian land of Small Russia (Ukraine) is under occupation of ethnical minority of Galitsians, called themselves by stolen name of Ukranians

Kyiv was around before Russia was ever a thing, people in Moscow were still eating mud and beating rocks together when king Rurik was around. Even if it was true that Ukrainian's are just "little Russian's" what does Russia stand to gain by bombing civilian infrastructure? You would think if you were trying to "liberate" land from "nazi's" you would try not to destroy every building in the country. Make up all the alt history you want but it just makes you sound like Putin in the Tucker Carlson interview.
