@@AlexRodriguez-cg9wu billy corgan wrote this as a personal aproach of what youth meant to him, well over the edge of ending it. In 1979, billy corgan was 12 years old, an age visualized as the transition between childhood and adolescence. If corgan is 28 (29 or 30 today) he would have been 12 year old in 2003. Hope that helps.
Holds a special place in my heart too. Born in 82, but makes me feel nostalgic for a time I never experienced. A time before technology ruled our lives.
Xomo, while your side of the story is beautiful, there is another part to this song that most people tend to not pay much attention to. Loosing touch with the youth people have been with for a quarter of their lives. The writer was 28 at the time of the song's recording, and he was finally becoming old enough to not be considered a delinquent or some teen. He wanted to make a song that helped 18-30 year-olds cope with the transition into adulthood and the difficulties of life.

If Billy Corgan were 28 now and wrote this song today, it'd be called 2003.

I had no idea, that's truly beautiful
As a teen who struggles with mental health and became mature too soon this song helps me with my anxiety and always made me feel safe
so this song, was introduced to me by my father who listened to them. amazing songs they had back in the day.
I feel nostalgic for the 90s and early 2000s, and I can resonate with this song even though it named 1979. This song ages like fine wine.
*_slowed is perfection_*
