Just discovered this - I'm in awe of this guy. One man and a guitar, Totally inspiring. Everything a great musician should be, connected to the past and an accomplished master whilst driving this music forward in an original way. I'm fussy and play decent guitar myself but could listen to Jeff play for hours. Only wish I could turn back the clock and try mastering this style. One day this music will catch on big-time. Glad you found out. It's interesting to know, you can import many picking style from standard tuning guitar to slack key tuning but not the other way around. Claw hammer and some banjo rolls can't harmonised well on standard tuning guitar.

I have been playing the standard Spanish guitar tuning for decades until , I started going into the the claw hammer and banjo rolls that I have to tune the guitar to slack key to play that style. Didn't know slack key tuning can play lots of other stuff that standard Guitar tuning can't. Cheers to slack key tuning.

I play Hawaiian Slack Key guitar also. Jeff is from Maui. I'm from the Big Island. Slack Key originated on the Big Island. The "Roots" of Hawaiian Slack Key guitar are from the Big Island. Jeff does have some essence of the original roots style, yet it is highly stylized. "Roots' Slack Key players like Alice Namakelua, Fred Punahoa, Ledward Kaapana play the more simple, soulful style that originated here on the Island of Hawaii. Ledward, in my opinion, is the last living legendary "Roots" player of true, pure, unadulterated, Hawaiian Slack Key. I've known Ledward for over 40 years, and he influenced me to play somewhat like him, though I developed my own unique style-sometimes based on the rythmns of an "Ipu", a percussive gourd that players of it accompany hula dancers.

Music isn't a competition. Both Jeff and Led have something to contribute to slack key. One way of playing is not "better" than the other. In fact, Led and Jeff play together at times. As Jeff said in the video, "It's very important to me as someone practicing a cultural tradition here in Hawaii to always have a connection to the past, to the kapuna, those who came before. Whenever I play or do an arrangement of a song, I keep in mind where the music came from before me. As long as you have that connection with the kapuna, music can move forward in a way that's still culturally rooted."
Basically, what tuning you use should depend on what you're playing.

Slack key, that what the old blues player called tuning standard tuning down a half step. Even Hendrix and SRV called it slack tuning.

I always thought it was just open G tuning. I didn't know it originated in Hawaii!
similar to a banjo, although less shrill, and the strum/ finger roll pattern on the guitar sound more pleasing, and less danceish and uppity like on the banjo.

I doesn't need to be, the pentatonic scale just lends itself well to blues and rock, which are both very popular forms of music, especially for the guitar.
search for Tião Carreiro e Pardinho videos on youtube, they played authentic Brazilian "Country" Music that is someway similar to this kind of guitar playing.
Only ingredient missing is the Aloha spirit.

What makes Slack Key guitar so different than just open tuning fingerstyle guitar? I'm not hearing much difference but maybe I'm missing something.

Kamehameha is the king who unified Hawai'i.
Standard tuning exists for a reason. It is pentatonic.
You can play pentatonic scales in open tunings as well, that's what a lot of blues slide players use. Standard tuning aims to make it easier to play across multiple keys, whereas open tunings can make one key easier than the rest.
