This is possibly the best suggestion on scenic designing I've ever got on the Inter-net !
Cheap, simple to make and brilliantly practical.
I've produced a dozen so far and will have another dozen by the end of the week, some are designed to function as woods, some as rough ground and one (so far) is going to be a village/hamlet.
Thank you so much for your prompting !

Mel, I have never seen these removable bases before, can you please show us the finished article to let us see how they turned out and when and how they would be used? Many thanks. Great video as always.

That's really cool. That kind of thing can be used for trees and anything really. I'll have to find a way to use it. Cheers

If you want your bases to fit tight you can cut them with a different hole saw to make up the difference from the kerf of the blade. Example: I cut holes with a 2" hole saw but with the kerf of the blade the hole ends up 2 1/8th". Then I cut the discs with a 2 1/8th hole saw and they fit perfect.
Very helpful vid Mel and it turned out looking great. Thumps up from me.

BlackTower Terrain I've only got a cheap hole bit mate, the varies sizes aren't close enough to do that :-(

Great vid Mel! I was thinking to avoid having to run the jigsaw a second time around the piece, you could cut the 2x4 in half, mark one half with your templates, cut the wholes in the templates (but don't cut the templates out) then glue the two 2x2 halves together lining it up on the 3 factory straight edges and leave it over night. Then you cut out your templates one time with the jigsaw, and bevel your edges.

RonCon Yep, that would work well for mass producing bases mate

Another bang-on video. I would also recommend using safety goggles as MDF dust your eyes isn't fun!

I cut boards to approximate size to fit the template (less waste being the idea), and stack two together to cut the template one time with the jigsaw (need clamps etc, depends on your set up). That way it's really less cutting and they match up better in my experience

I was looking to do something like this for my miniatures, you seem to have a knack of uploading things just before I attempt them, which is great, because then I actually know sort of what I'm doing :P so please keep that trend up!

    awesome video!
out of curiosity, what size hole cutter do you recommend and if you dont mind any rough estimates on dimensions of that piece? I want to make terrain in a similar fashion but I'm afraid I'll make it either too gigantic or way too small for my WH40k games.
Any recommendations from all your experience ?

I know this is an older video, but on the point of the holes & the discs...Could you not cut out another set of holes that are of the next diameter up on the hole cutter and use them as the counters? Just a thought? And is it me or does the end product look like E.T.? Great vid as always Mel mate! Nice one. ;)

Not really because the tool is design to cut neat holes, not neat discs mate ;-)

Great! This will work better for Warhammer Fantasy as the troop blocks can move about the area terrain. I appreciate the information. Any tips on using a hand held jigsaw? I am thinking about getting a table jigsaw which seems easier to use. However, to justify the expense, I would have to make a lot of terrain - not a bad thing really.

    • @TheTerrainTutor

You'd need a disc cutter rather than a hole cutter then mate
