I wish artists would stop apologizing for their prices. Don’t say “I’m sorry but my prices are fixed” just say “prices are fixed”. It’s not rude. You don’t owe them anything. They asked a question and the answer is no. Saying no is not rude. You have nothing to apologize for.

Yep I bought a table off a carpenter he wanted it gone to clear up space, two hundred and fifty euro for a georgous slab coffee table with intricately hand carved legs. I gave him double that with the promise to return in the spring to commission a couple of adirondacks. Carpentry isn't even his job he's a solicitor he probably makes 250 an hour.
As a balloon artist myself I can confirm that literally walking in to any store and making balloons for free and in exchange for handing out cards is true
I was called into jury duty once and a balloon artist happened to be in the waiting room with us (pre-covid). He gave us lessons on how to do bears and a parrot using the horde of balloons in his backpack, and even gave out free artwork. He said he always enjoyed the practice because he would compete, but he did give out his card. I still have it to this day.
You can't even try to imagine how a man can be such an ego-bloated failure of a husband and still think their marriage will hold. He must think to himself that he can get anything he wants if he's angry enough about it. He deserves to have as much as possible taken from him during the divorce proceedings, just to strike a point home.

I think I was charging around $150 an hour back then, and I probably would have discounted a large booking. Having me there for five hours or so certainly would have been less than $500 back then (I'd charge a lot more these days, but I'm a lot more established now).

As someone with multiple genetic disorders, the level of entitlement that I’ve gotten from parents of kids with genetic disorders is next level. I’m not surprised that artists have been harassed by these companies or parents. To any creators out there who’ve been victims of harassment in this way, don’t let them get away with it. Genetic illness isn’t an excuse to just be a choosing begger.
Bit of info regarding the PhD: For a lot of the hard science fields, the university actually pays a living stipend to the grad students. At least at the place I went to, the professor would come up with proposals and apply for grants - government funding. It was then mainly the grad students and a few undergrads who'd do the legwork in the lab to get stuff done. As such, the government would feel like it wasn't getting its money's worth if progress was slow, and progress would be slow if the grad students had to balance lab work and earning enough to live. So students working on a PhD would be paid a living stipend with the expectation of working 60+ hours a week in the lab. Also, people would enter the lab with just a bachelors as a PhD candidate. (Basically, masters was just something you incidentally got along the way.) If your burned out and left early, you'd just get the masters, having been paid to get it rather than pay for it. Don't consider that a hack to get just a masters, however. Because people who burn out tend to leave with a masters, job hunting afterwards will have prospective employers look at the masters and how long it took. If you're gonna burn out, burn out in 2-2.5 years.
As someone who has used a Community Food Bank that does delivery, on a few occasions, while some of the stuff one gets is hit-and-miss on ones' favorites list (not a fan of olives or kidney beans for instance), when they drive 30 minutes in stormy weather to deliver $200+ worth of groceries, you can't really complain too much. (That being said, it does help to know of folks who can utilize olives and kidney beans, and other things one might not be too fond of, in their own cooking.)

I’ve never even considered asking for art, design services, or any other service for free. How would artists and anyone, survive on no income? And asking them to work for free, or for a pittance (sp?) is insulting. If I can’t afford something I want I either look for an alternative, or save up and then buy the art or pay for the service at the stated price.

When I was a kid, one of my older sisters (16 years my elder) was into buying cake molds that were in the shape of famous characters - so like Darth Vader's helmet or Bugs Bunny. You would bake the cake in it and then get an icing bag and dot the entire surface and sides with little dabs of different colored icing to show who it was. It was painstaking and meticulous work, and I really appreciated it on my bday. As someone who has become interested in baking, I'm fortunate to have surrounded myself with people who appreciate what I make as I'm learning. It may not always look the best, but everything has tasted good - or at least was edible enough to choke down.

Thanks for the shoutout - I'm the magician/balloon artist in this video. Just a quick answer to the final question (which I get a lot): why redact the company's name? Yes, it was a Fortune 500 Company, but the lady in question was probably an assistant manager at their local store. She probably makes around $50k a year (if that) and is just trying to do her job. I wasn't trying to get a regular person like that pulled in to a viral lynch mob type of situation. Because, knowing these companies, the easiest thing for them to do would have been to fire the manager in question and make her a scapegoat. I wouldn't have slept well at night knowing that a working shmoe -- just like me -- lost her job because her company decided to make her a scapegoat for practices they were happy she deployed when it was making them money, right up until it started making them look bad. Glad you all enjoyed the story!
Life advice: If someone says they are struggling and need money for basic amenities like clothes and groceries, but aren't willing to just accept actual clothes (unless new and an expensive brand) or groceries... They are bsing you. Period. A person with or without children who hasn't eaten in 2 days would NEVER decline free food... Even if they appear homeless, if you buy them water and some food and they complain about you getting cheap stuff or not just giving them money, they aren't homeless, they are the "Professional homeless". Yes, there are people who actually make a living pretending to be homeless. By kind but be safe as well.
Hey rslash, just a friendly reminder that the sciences are typically well subsidized in the states and pay you to get a doctorate. I’ve been getting a stipend of 28k/year plus insurance and tuition paid by my university since I got my bachelors three years ago, and they’ll be raising the stipend to 31k this year. This means that CB pays you less than you get paid to get the degree.

As someone with multiple genetic disorders, the level of entitlement that I’ve gotten from parents of kids with genetic disorders is next level. I’m not surprised that artists have been harassed by these companies or parents.
To any creators out there who’ve been victims of harassment in this way, don’t let them get away with it. Genetic illness isn’t an excuse to just be a choosing begger.

Bit of info regarding the PhD:
For a lot of the hard science fields, the university actually pays a living stipend to the grad students. At least at the place I went to, the professor would come up with proposals and apply for grants - government funding. It was then mainly the grad students and a few undergrads who'd do the legwork in the lab to get stuff done. As such, the government would feel like it wasn't getting its money's worth if progress was slow, and progress would be slow if the grad students had to balance lab work and earning enough to live.
So students working on a PhD would be paid a living stipend with the expectation of working 60+ hours a week in the lab. Also, people would enter the lab with just a bachelors as a PhD candidate. (Basically, masters was just something you incidentally got along the way.) If your burned out and left early, you'd just get the masters, having been paid to get it rather than pay for it. Don't consider that a hack to get just a masters, however. Because people who burn out tend to leave with a masters, job hunting afterwards will have prospective employers look at the masters and how long it took. If you're gonna burn out, burn out in 2-2.5 years.

As someone who has used a Community Food Bank that does delivery, on a few occasions, while some of the stuff one gets is hit-and-miss on ones' favorites list (not a fan of olives or kidney beans for instance), when they drive 30 minutes in stormy weather to deliver $200+ worth of groceries, you can't really complain too much. (That being said, it does help to know of folks who can utilize olives and kidney beans, and other things one might not be too fond of, in their own cooking.)

Joshua Fluke has a channel about all these scam "jobs" that are hiring, mostly in IT. He put one company on blast wanting someone with a masters to work unpaid for 2 months, and the CEO responded to him, threatening to sue. These companies are insane.
Here's a tip for a lot of CBs: You’re a terrible person if you think that hiring random people, minor or adult, to work for you at zero pay is a good idea.

I’ve never even considered asking for art, design services, or any other service for free. How would artists and anyone, survive on no income? And asking them to work for free, or for a pittance (sp?) is insulting. If I can’t afford something I want I either look for an alternative, or save up and then buy the art or pay for the service at the stated price.

When I was a kid, one of my older sisters (16 years my elder) was into buying cake molds that were in the shape of famous characters - so like Darth Vader's helmet or Bugs Bunny. You would bake the cake in it and then get an icing bag and dot the entire surface and sides with little dabs of different colored icing to show who it was. It was painstaking and meticulous work, and I really appreciated it on my bday. As someone who has become interested in baking, I'm fortunate to have surrounded myself with people who appreciate what I make as I'm learning. It may not always look the best, but everything has tasted good - or at least was edible enough to choke down.

Thanks for the shoutout - I'm the magician/balloon artist in this video. Just a quick answer to the final question (which I get a lot): why redact the company's name? Yes, it was a Fortune 500 Company, but the lady in question was probably an assistant manager at their local store. She probably makes around $50k a year (if that) and is just trying to do her job. I wasn't trying to get a regular person like that pulled in to a viral lynch mob type of situation. Because, knowing these companies, the easiest thing for them to do would have been to fire the manager in question and make her a scapegoat. I wouldn't have slept well at night knowing that a working shmoe -- just like me -- lost her job because her company decided to make her a scapegoat for practices they were happy she deployed when it was making them money, right up until it started making them look bad.

Life advice: If someone says they are struggling and need money for basic amenities like clothes and groceries, but aren't willing to just accept actual clothes (unless new and an expensive brand) or groceries... They are bsing you. Period. A person with or without children who hasn't eaten in 2 days would NEVER decline free food...
Even if they appear homeless, if you buy them water and some food and they complain about you getting cheap stuff or not just giving them money, they aren't homeless, they are the "Professional homeless". Yes, there are people who actually make a living pretending to be homeless. By kind but be safe as well.

Hey rslash, just a friendly reminder that the sciences are typically well subsidized in the states and pay you to get a doctorate. I’ve been getting a stipend of 28k/year plus insurance and tuition paid by my university since I got my bachelors three years ago, and they’ll be raising the stipend to 31k this year. This means that CB pays you less than you get paid to get the degree.
