Song is named “Sally Ann”. In Surrey County, North Carolina, Fiddler David Bass tells us, it’s called the national
anthem. Surrey County is on the border with Virginia, in western NC.

There isn’t another old time revivalist type band out there that can do it like the Freight Hoppers!! They just git it. Everything from their name to song selection, to renditions of the tunes. It’s just super sincere, and unforced!!! Only “group” I like better is the Frank Lee & Adam Tanner -two mules- album! I don’t know if that can even be considered a competitor though for obvious reasons and the fact that an old time band keeping Appalachia and Americana culture alive is not a contest because we all win by learning new material. Yes I do prefer certain bands over others and even certain arrangements over others. Even then though I will glean at least a little knowledge. Final point is I guess I like old time because it’s living history. No charts, no corporations, no egos. Just keeping alive our culture through the universally loved language the world over, MUSIC!!!!
