Meh, one study. I'll still eat bananas in my smoothie.
And it was on one specific antioxidant when there’s plenty in berries & acid/ vitamin c has shown to drastically reduce it so if you drink the smoothie right after making it or blend with orange juice this is irrelevant
Agreed. I microwave bananas to make them sweeter and destroy the enzyme. Cool down in about a minute and right into my smoothie 🥤😄
Not to mention that “study” as funded by a processed food industrial company…
Typical.
I love Dr G but this comes across as very nit picky forsure. In the grand scheme of things putting banana in your smoothies isnt going to make any difference.
@@ShawnGetty-eb1gj Welp, in his defense, he presents the science. I think that when it comes to nutrition at least some confirmation studies would be nice.
I love the combo mango+cacao in smoothies, even better than banana+cacao👌 persimmon is also amazing with cacao!!!!
What about frozen bananas?
DocG You are amazing. Thank you for all you do!
I’m still having bananas in my smoothies. Perfection is the enemy or good. When does it get to be too much perfection chasing…
My QUESTIONS:
>what about unripe bananas?
>what about frozen bananas?
>what's the time interval after eating a banana before eating other polyphenol rich foods?
>are cooked sweet potatoes a good alternative to bananas?
I have never used bananas in my smoothies. I use, dates, nuts, seeds, frozen peas, cooked dried beans, cacao powder blueberries and greens. The dates (3) and blueberries make it very sweet and help the greens go down.
However, I do us banans in my chocolate popsicls so I might try cooking them next time.
I'm open to learning about changes I need to make to my diet. I even steam my spinach and chards before adding them to my smoothies now to reduce the oxalate levels - anothe recommendation from Dr G.
Why not switch spinach and chard with kale to avoid the oxalates altogether and get the huge benefits of raw kale? Just a thought 😊
Are you sure cooking spinach reduces oxalate levels? I thought it didn't that's why he recommends not eating it more than once a week.
Great information. Thank you!
That was very interesting. I liked the correlation between the melanin in the banana and in our own human skin.
Okay I am so curious if orange juice would help. What I do is I wait to put the banana in at the very last and I only use one banana when I'm making a smoothie for two. And I pour orange juice on the banana right away. And then blend it right away and consume it right away and I also use pineapples in my kale smoothies, with various types of nuts, seeds
I'm 70 years old and am still living and fit in spite of putting bananas in my smoothies! 💋
Wow I guess the study isn’t true and everything he said we can just throw away. Thanks
@Volcorps I don't think this poster is saying everything said is not true. They're simply stating their experience
Yup, I use 1/2 frozen banana and 1 cup of blueberries so I can get my greens in me. Otherwise, I do not eat greens because I find them bitter.
@@Volcorps Oh, you're still welcome to be afraid. Go right ahead!
He presents the science. Why not get the most nutrition out of the foods you eat.
Good day sir!
That study was so limited in the smoothies that they tested.
Additionally, they looked at one food interfering with the nutrient absorption from another. But foods have hundreds of compounds in them, and other benefits. What are all the other compounds in bananas that might make other important nutrients be absorbed better?
Also, who is eating bananas at every meal?
what are all the beneficial compounds, vitamins, minerals that come along with bananas that make the smoothie healthier despite tamping down the ability for some isolated compound being properly used by your body? What ratio of banana to other foods are in your smoothie?
Lastly, the looked at COCOA - one food vs. bananas. Who lets their smoothies sit for an hour before drinking them? You also have all the other foods that might be in your smoothies that serve to block the enzyme in the smoothie. Lots of vitamin C and other things that slow or stop the browning process. Anyone ever cut apples and drop them into a bowl of water with a little lemon juice in it? Anyone make guac? Lime juice stops the browning. In short, with a variety of fruits and veg in your smoothies will most certainly make this a non-issue. My smoothies have four different berries, some tropical fruit, peaches, kale, spinach, beet, carrot, sweet potato, mango. I am not worried about the stupid banana enzyme that blunts a compound in Cocoa from doing your body good.
Studies like this one is how some people get lead into orthorexia as they end up spending their entire lives working to constantly perfect their eating and food combining.
If you ate only whole food smoothies for the rest of your life with lots of fruits, nuts, seeds, grains (oats), a bit of beans, greens and a few other veggies AND bananas you would be vastly healthier that 99% of the population.
What about unripe bananas? Is the enzyme present in a green banana? I find unripe ones offer the same texture, just not the sweetness (I make pumpkin waffles with them).
I had the same question. I was disappointed that he did not address this.
Das würde mich auch sehr interessieren
Why wouldnt you want the banana to be sweet?isnt that the whole reason we humans eat fruit in the first place ?
If there are brown spots on the peel, are not we removing them when we toss out the banana skin, or is the enzyme in the banana itself and works to turn the skin brown first?
Here in the philippines we have a variety of banana called "SABA" that we usually boil before we eat. That could be a better alternative, what do you think?
What about putting a 1/2 c of white beans in the smoothie? That and soy milk would definitely make it creamy.
I always add vinegar and/or citrus to my oatmeal and smoothies.
Now I just make sure to mix it with my banana or apple first, based on the previous study you talked about which used lemon to counteract the effects of the browning. (Did they test vinegar? Does it need to be citrus?) Given this, I'll heat my bananas in bulk and then freeze them.
They did test acetic acid (vinegar) against ascorbic acid (Vit C, lemon juice) in one study, and ascorbic was better.
I hate it when people with authority talks about science irresponsibly. When you test for an specific thing, you can only make conclusions about that thing, in no case you can say the opposite effect happens in the rest of the things you didn't test. This study ONLY proved the interaction with a particular antioxidant in cocoa, no other fruit, no other veggie, no other anything, not even other nutrients present in cocoa. It was specifically designed to test that and it only controls for that. As someone that does this type of statistical modelling for a living, I tell you that unless you are specifically interested in getting this element from cocoa, you can just keep putting bananas in your smoothie.
I still make smoothies with bananas. My hope is that my process of freezing and thawing out the bananas kills that enzyme. ...I get them a bit hot now before putting them in my smoothie.
Would adding banana 🍌 vinegar (from Rancho Gotdo) have the same effect is I add it to my oat grist with wild blueberries 🫐 , flaxseeds 🌰 and cacao 🍫 nibs?
Honestly, I think our bodies take care of it. When I get a cut, I don’t have to worry about it healing. Or I don’t have to tell my liver to detox and get impurities out of my body. So I’m not going to worry about eating a banana! My focus is on getting physical activity daily, strength training 2-3 x a week, being social, seeking to learn new things, don’t smoke, abuse drugs or alcohol, be kind and eat veggies, fruit, grains, beans, nuts and seeds in all kinds of variety and colors. Moderation in processed foods too.
I wonder if adding greenish banana last doused in orange juice would help, a green banana would be better than no banana maybe?
I love putting bananas in oats can I just heat up the oats with water and the bananas before adding the berries would that be enough??
So if I can’t have banana with my oatmeal and blueberries in the morning. Can I eat the banana later in the day like 2 hours after?
Curious about dehydrated fruits now like apples. Ones that aren’t above 80 degrees like he mentioned
How does a book premiere at the top of a best seller list? Doesn’t it have to sell first?
You can make it happen if you do a pre-sale

Would adding banana 🍌 vinegar (from Rancho Gordo) have the same effect if I add it to my oat groats with wild blueberries 🫐 , flaxseeds 🌰 and cacao 🍫 nibs?
What about cooking the bananas along with oatmeal? That is what I usually do, one cup of oatmeal, two cups of water, chopped banana and cook for 6 minutes in the microwave. Then I add frozen blueberries to the cooked oatmeal. Does cooking the banana help?
So just cook your bananas before adding it in smoothies or oatmeals right? I wonder if freezing them has the same effect?
I don’t think it does, freezing just slows down the browning activity but cooking destroys the enzyme
How about microwaving a banana?
No because that’ll destroy the other good compounds
@@kovy689 ?
@@kovy689 like what?
@@kovy689Microwave is like steaming, doesnt destroy much
@@kovy689 I guess the banana is mostly there to make the smoothie more creamy, while the other ingredients like berries and greens pack the bigger nutritional punch, so I’m considering microwaving my bananas now too. :)
Dr. G and her patients that cure all sorts of diseases put bananas in their smoothies
Dr. G and her patients? Dr. G is a guy.
I always cook my bananas in my oatmeal. I hope that helps
Yea in banana pancakes
So do I. I microwave my oatmeal with what start as banana slices in it, not adding blueberries until after the cooking is done. The bananas mostly end up mixed into the oatmeal, no longer in chunks, but the sweetness and taste of the bananas is still there.
So if you cook your banana in with your porridge and then top the whole thing with some berries you should be good? What about freeze dried bananas?
What about avocados in green smoothies? They go brown too, no?
What about putting bananas in while you oatmeal is cooking. The oatmeal is boiling which is greater than 70°C. Would that work?
Adding chopped up banana to my oatmeal as it's cooking should dull this response, right? I prepare oatmeal all in one go on the stove, with frozen blueberries , banana, walnuts, ceylon cinnamon, ground flaxseed, real maple syrup, raisins or chopped dates, and a bit of plant based milk.
How about adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C) powder to a banana-containing smoothie? Ascorbic acid prevents browning, and so does citric acid.
I just had a banana in my smoothie so this video is very timely :o
13:11 👈🏽 THE ANSWER
Ambrosia apples do not turn brown so I assume they are high in antioxidants
You could pop your bananas in the microwave for a minute before freezing them for smoothies
Lets hope more studies are made. Come on big Banana, get er done.
So, if you use a banana that’s not browning, is that ok to ensure that there’s not interrupting or canceling out of said nutrients?
If anything you'd want to use a banana that is Browning because some of the enzyme is used up to try to stop the Browning
@@CessnaPilot99 hmmm, I don’t know if I can deduce that from what the video suggested. I will give it another listen. But from my first listen, it seemed as if it was the “ browning “ that was the issue when mixed with certain fruits that hindered certain nutrients.
Mate, the browning starts when the banana is cut/mashed/blended!!! Mash a banana with no visible browning on the flesh in a plate with a fork and come back to it in 5 minutes.
Doesn't blending fruit and vegetable obliterate the fibre that your gut bacteria need? And aren't the sugars absorbed much faster compared to eating whole fruits and vegetables? Just trying to find out how healthy smoothies really are, also because you typically also use more fruit and vegetables that you would if you were eating them whole 🍌🍏🥕🤔
If I eat banana at lunchtime with some cranberry juice that would also be a problem I assume. So would I have to eat banana by itself with only water to drink?
Harvey Diamond taught us in his book Fit for Life to properly combine your foods. Sweet fruits like bananas could only be combined with raisins or prunes or other sweet fruits. Sweet fruits were not to be combined either acid fruits. This is old news. Nothing new just new for the younger generation.
I wouldn't be opposed to using mushrooms or cooked bananas in a smoothie but def no lemon or onion
Or onion - yuk!
Throw an extra spoonful of cacao in there!
After watching this I made my normal evening smoothy - kefir, porage oats and a banana. Tomorrow morning I will have my normal morning smoothy - kefir with seeds, nuts, amla powder, beetroot powder, cocoa powder, cinnamon powder, turmeric, ginger powder, garlic powder, olive oil - washing down my B12 tablets. With all that added to my kefir it is too stiff to drink so i dilute it with probiotic yogurt made with lactobacillus routeri.
dr greger says to ditch the oil completely
@@veganchiefwarrior6444you mentioned the good doctor recommending ditching olive oil, but he will ask you to ditch animal foods first, so I am surprised you said nothing about the kefir.
@@trapezius77 i don't know what kefir is my bad
Dr Greger sounds like he had a little too much of mushrooms lately...🤭
🤣
Dr Gregor talked about this months ago. Why again now? I’m still eating bananas in my smoothies. I eat berries separately as I have always done.
why berries are sooooo good on banana oatmeal cooked in the micro...
Can't eat raw mushrooms
too many conflicts, this is getting to kowalski analysis range
Should I avoid adding bananas to a green smoothie which could have spinach, kale or broccoli?
Hmm. If the byproducts of the enzyme are antimicrobial is this an issue for the gut microbiota? More study required!
Byproducts of the enzyme? The polyphenol oxidase? The enzyme breaks down polyphenols. Did he mention any byproducts or anything having antimicrobial activity?
stopped drinking smoothies all together after i found out bananas in smoothies is bad, always thought processing food wasnt the way to go anyway, eat your food people, as for bananas in oatmeal, if it means eating eatmeal or not.. 30 percent reductions in polyphenols doesnt matter if you are eating it every day, i doubt we absorb all those polyphenols anyway, dont mind the health anxiety inducing information, dr gregor can be perfect, 99 percent of us cant, and tbh i dont think it will make much difference if any in the end anyway, know your limitations, dont end up with health anxiety induced alopecia like me, have some faith in your good genetics 😉 dr g obviously has pretty bad genetics so hes trying to make up for it with a perfectionist mentality, good for him he can handle it, most of us simply dont need to worry as much
This is a minor tragedy. I no longer eat ANY bananas. Sniff.
why not??
Orthorexia much? Bananas are good for you. Keep eating them if you like them. Jesus christ. Overreaction
Can someone remind the good doctor: MUSHROOMS ARE *NOT* VEGETABLES!!! (see the Fungi Kingdom for more details)
Not giving up those bananas in my smoothie buddy. Just saying.
I'm just going to stop eating everything. (Only kidding, listen until the end).
"big chicolate funded researchers" thanks but no thanks. Not sure what their agenda is here but also...who lets their smoothie sit around for an hour???
Somebody who makes a double smoothie and leaves half in the fridge for later.
Well I use humanely slaughtered bananas so I’m sure it’s fine
What happened to him? Very difficult speech. Painful hum uhm uhm to hear. I didn’t understand anything today. A big mix salad of words. I could not follow his train of thought. Very very disappointing video! In the end I still don’t know if banana in smoothie are good or not
sounds like he's doing this podcast on the fly is all. I bet he'll revisit this in a more prepared way.
@@freebrook he sounds like drunk to me. 🫣
I think it's okay to put bananas in your oatmeal, as long as you do things in the right order. First I put the bananas and the water in a blender and make what I call "monkey milk." Then I cook the oats in this liquid in a bowl in the microwave for 10 minutes. That should kill the polyphenol oxidase. It's only after that, when I add the berries, raisins, spices, flax and cocoa.
That is sick, that people are using tax money to research this. Banana smoothie is just a drink to enjoy occasionally, I dont even understand the point of this video.. I drink it almost every week or every other week and I am just not going to get my head stuffed with irrelevant BS
I don't think Mars Inc., the sponsor that funded the study, is a tax-funded organization.
15 minutes of my time wasted.
Hogwash. Some of these obsessive behaviors will have neurotics going in circles.
I just consume bacon, eggs, and sausages. Sometimes, a steak for breakfast. Enjoy spiking your blood sugar levels in a smoothie
And you can enjoy your heart disease.
Stop trying to promote class 1 a carcinogens, you just sound stupid
Enjoy the significantly higher CVD, diabetes, cancer, stroke, Alzheimers, and all-cause mortality rates that come with the animal foods and UPFs. Compare the Seventh-Day Adventists in California, who live healthy, disease-free, physically active lives into their 80s and 90s, with Texans, many of whom die of obesity, cancer, heart disease, etc. Now think why that is. What do the Seventh-Day Adventists eat?
@trapezius77 What are plant based foods like beyond meat? They are UPF's. Think you will have a healthy life from eating that garbage? Think again. There is no sugar in unprocessed meat, so that cuts out the chance of getting diabetes, cancer, and alzhiemers.
Hey doc, are you drunk?
His speech doesn't sound the least bit impaired to me, just a few "ums" where he is thinking or searching his script for what to say next.
Are you drunk? Why aren't you talking normally?
Exactly what I think! So painful to listen today
