This video makes me feel the way people feel when I talk about knitting sweaters or spinning yarn. When YOU do it, it doesn’t seem complex, but when I think about doing it, I have 1000 more questions.

When you're removing the coolant reservoir, I find it MUCH easier to do it as follows:
    1) undo the bolt on top
    2) pull the pin/plug out on the bottom
    3) lift the reso straight off of the tabs.
I find that I run less of a risk of snapping the tabs off by prying them

Good video straight to the point. You should of loosen the sump plug on oil tank a bit more and loosened with a single finger for the rest. Let the plug drop into the bucket. Theres no oil pouring over your hand that way less messy too. Also use some oil to lubricate your new washer/gasket on the oil filter. This creates a better seal and easier to get on

Just did this job on my 2010 Mini Cooper S!
Do be careful when moving the coolant reservoir out of the way. My piping was rather stiff and stubborn, I had to be careful not to damage anything. Screwing the filter in is a bit of a pain, you have to do it blind. Make sure to hand tighten first before getting out your tools! Also, get some newspapers or something under where the filter is - oil WILL drip and leak on the floor.

Whenever you do an oil change with a cartridge filter always release the pressure in the filter housing before putting the drain plug back, oil stays in the housing until the pressure is released which means more oil will come out of the drain hole, so if you put that plug back in before doing so you will still have dirty oil in your engine

Be careful when moving the coolant reservoir out of the way. I pushed mine a little too far and snapped the T connector that joins the return line from the turbo. $107 extra dollars for that mistake!

I have a 2011 with the N18 engine, I think the oil filter is even harder to get to than this one, I pretty much had to completely remove that coolant reservoir to get to the housing and it was still a pretty tight fit.

I know this is a 2 year old video, but if anyone is still watching this to learn:
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, check the oil filter housing for any pressure leaks at the end of the oil change.
Ideally, start up the vehicle as shown, let it idle, then give the engine a light, consistent rev. A lot of things can go wrong with cartridge filters. The O ring can catch and slide out of place when tightening, for example. Pressurize the system, ideally for 45-60 seconds, and check around the housing for any signs of a leak.
I can't tell you how many times I have watched green techs run the standard 10 second idle check (that you use for spin on filters. NOT cartridge.), and see a dry filter... only to have the pressure pop the seal and lock the motor down the street.
    Do. A. Proper. Leak. Check.

It should just click in when you push it in. If you don't, it may let oil bypass the filter or it will click itself in when you tighten it back in.

I read on s BMW forum that there is a cage inside the filter housing that often gets lost or missed when reassembling. I didn’t see that here. I ask because I’m getting P13C9 code after a dealer oil change and that missing cage is a common cause of that code

Although this video was educational I can’t believe it’s sponsored by 1A Auto? Seems he was in a rush to put the oil plug back in that he didn’t truly wait till all the old oil drip out the oil pan. Also the mechanic was so nonchalant about cleaning up the oil in the filter holder and housing? That old oil should be removed/cleaned as much as possible. Lastly, since he serviced a specific car he should have told the viewing audience what type of oil is appropriate. Coming from 1A Auto I expected better, SMDH

  • @davidcipriani5961

You can actually unscrew the filter housing with a long extension with removing the coolant reservoir. Then from underneath you can remove it and replace it from under with removing the reservoir. Too easy
