Great video. Would add the following note. On the threaded metal ring, there is a small hole and it denotes where the thread starts. If you position the hole slightly counterclockwise to the toothed plastic edge of the filter assembly, it will be in the right place to engage the thread. It is one full thread, so you want to spin the ring one full turn clockwise. The ring also has a stop on it so that it can't be over-tightened. If you turn (and tap with screwdriver/hammer, if needed) until the hole ends up in the same place as where you started, you will feel that point where it stops. Also, safety glasses a good idea.

Installing the new blue O ring in the tank first and then put the pump in, this is much easier and will; prevent leaking. Also put a little bit of oil on the rubber O ring inside the filter, this will prevent it from breaking on install. Silicone spray also works.
For anyone struggling to seat the thick blue tank seal, instead of leaving it on the fuel filter housing, attach it to the top of the tank instead where it needs to go, then slide the housing through it and tighten it down. Use a little grease if you need to. You can risk pinching the seal if you try to force it on with the housing.
How often should one replace the filter? This video is great. Will have to take my time to do this. Thank you for your generosity and sharing this video.
Would be good to relief the fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump fuse and then start the car until it runs out of gas, with that you ensure sistem is not pressurized, it would make easier the removal of the fuel line and less risk of a fuel spill inside the vehicle. Good video!!
Hello a great video with a lot of information. When changing the filter you need a bit of patience, but as always super .... I'm looking forward to the next video .... Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 👋👋👋 Kai
Had you pressed the Schrader valve pin on the fuel rail, you wouldn't have had the pressure in the fuel line, subsequently avoiding the issue of spraying fuel about the interior whilst popping the pipe off... The Schrader valve (identical to a tyre valve, which is also a Schrader valve) is at the rear of the camshaft cover, on the left hand end of the engine.
It is a great video, I want to add that you need to twist to the leftwith the screwdriver when taking the pum apart than prime out with the screwdriver as the gentleman explain, later when u put it back together you need to put the pump head in and twist it to the right after getting the head inside the pump body, it has locker pin that need to be match. Also mark are good references but use finger nail Polish , because the gasoline will delete the mark
Would relieving the fuel pressure at the rail help to not spray fuel when pulling the line from the housing? Some fuel spillage is inevitable, but I thought maybe that would cut down on it a bit.

This is unrelated to this fuel filter project, but wanted to get your thoughts. I have 2016 Cooper S Countryman All4. “Engine Malfunction…Reduced Power” alert came on 2 weeks. Other than the ignition noticeably taking a second longer to start the engine, it seems to be driving fine. Innova CarScan pulled a code P1338. Two things that might not be related to this alert: 1. The alert came on when was driving slowly and switched to Sport mode. 2. This alert went away 2 days ago. The weather is significantly warmer. Could a faulty Mass Air Flow sensor pull this code? Or, malfunctioning coil(s)?
Well, I bought a fuel filter, popped off the backseat and unscrewed the lid behind the passenger seat only to find a plastic sheet covering the hole underneath the plate, there is no servicable fuel filter in european mini coopers apparantly, maybe in the cooper S, but not in the base cooper. Found out more people have had the same surprise as me. On the other side is the fuel pump, and there is no exchangeable fuel filter in that, I guess you have to replace the whole fuel pump if you get a clogged fuel supply.... How in the hell can they sell fuel filters for my mini when there is nowhere to fit it???!!! And on realoem it shows a fuel filter housing just like the one in the video, but there is none in reality on the european models. How can a car not have a fuel filter?? Thanks for a great video anyways!
@@ProjectMini Finally got around to changing the fuel filter this morning. It was very easy with the help of your video. The hardest part for me was getting the top off the filter housing. Also had a little hiccup with seating the new blue gasket correctly. I had to watch a little further in your video when you explained the black gasket sits in the big groove of the blue gasket.
So I did this job two days ago, and there were no leaks. I even went on a 20 mile drive… nothing. Today I went to fill up the tank, and there was a puddle of fuel under the car, below where the filter sits. No other leaks or drips since. What could it be?
Hi, FYI : There is no fuel filter on the R56 One/Cooper NON-S under the passenger seat (except on Korean and US versions).🤔 Mine (European R56 Cooper non-S of july 2007) hasn't one under seat. The only filter is the small pad on the fuel pump located under the left passenger rear seat (it looks like a Senseo Coffee pad ). You can only clean this pad with brake cleaner or ... replace the entire pump. On Diesel version, the filter is under the body on the left side of the car.🙂
So how many days did your mini smell like fuel after this job ? At least they did the favor of adding that access panel so you can get to the damn thing without dropping the tank .
There is a hole on the ring that marks the start of the thread - line it up a little bit counterclockwise to the tooth edge on the back edge of the filter housing. It will go one full turn and then stop. There is a stop pressed into the ring that prevents overtightening.
Hey, ive got a 2008 r56 and im experiencing 2nd time start and slight rough idle problems, also sometimes under load it misses and no power could this be fixed with changing the fuel filter? Thought of trying this first until i replace the high pressure fuel pump. Cheers
Hello! Thanks for the video! I have a question based on the comments here suggesting that I release the fuel pressure first before changing the filter. How do I set it under pressure afterwards? Is the car doing it by itself when I fake start it like at the end of the video or do I do something specific?
I am watching this video and I've done this job. What I don't understand is why the body did not go back into the tank easily. Is there something that can get in the way or get bent or needs to be dealt with when putting the body back into the tank? I had to push down hard to ge the metal ring to thread and then when I tightened the metal ring it popped off if I tightened it too far. Can you troubleshoot this a bit?
@@ProjectMini I think I did that. I saw on the fuel filter video that you had to push the filter body into the tank as well. I used a little o ring tool to put the lip of the gasket into the filter body and I still had to push. Is that unusual. How would you test it to see if it is done right?
I think you might have missed part of the video. I was pushing at first because i had the gasket on wrong. Once i realized it i fixed it and explained the issue i was having
A wet rag and some soap, probably. Mine was caked with with road dirt (we have a lot of dirt roads in our area) that had found its way to the top side of the tank. There's not likely to be any actual grease stuff that can't be wiped away with a rag. The main thing is you want the area clean to avoid getting dirt and debris into the seal, the tank, and the filter.
Is it necessary to disconnect the battery? I did that and now the electrics are all wrong, lights/locks dont work etc. Looking like its caused a problem with the FRM
Help!!! I replaced the fuel filter in a 2009 mini cooper s located underneath the back seat on the passenger side. Now it won’t start. Any ideas why? It was starting fine before. Thanks
What fuel filter did you get from Amazon. One had a bad review for the glue melting away. Can you leave a link to the one you used? Thanks great videos subscriber here.
Quick question my brother, when i start the car in the morning it shakes, backfires for about a minute before it settes down. It also gives out strong gas smell, do you think its the fuel filter???
definitely the high pressure fuel pump. mine was doing the same thing, i changed it, now it runs like a dream. try to find a junkyard mini, because it costs a pretty penny
A tip to release the fuel pressure is to remove the fuel pump fuse or the relay and run the car until it shuts off. It shouldn't have any pressure after that.
Hi I changed the fuel filter and now when running the mini it's losing fuel I've double checked the fuel filter to make sure its in properly and it looks ok.. Any ideas of why?
@@ProjectMini Thank you for getting back to me. On the fuel gauge. Where it tells you how much fuel you have. Only went round the block and it lost 4 miles. The performance of the mini isn't very good either. Did an oil and filter change to see if it was that but no success. Do you think it could be my fuel pump that's at fault?
You're not getting the fuel pressure up to pump the fuel due to a leak. Did you remember to put the large black o-ring back on? In the future it's probably better to ask for advice in one of the facebook groups linked in the description of the video.

Installing the new blue O ring in the tank first and then put the pump in, this is much easier and will; prevent leaking. Also put a little bit of oil on the rubber O ring inside the filter, this will prevent it from breaking on install. Silicone spray also works.
Use Vaseline since it's petroleum product, you don't want even a bit of oil or silicone getting in there my mans

And on realoem it shows a fuel filter housing just like the one in the video, but there is none in reality on the european models. How can a car not have a fuel filter?? Thanks for a great video anyways!
last time I disconnected my battery my foot well module lost power and needed reprogrammed.. if I only disconnect the negative will that happen again?
Great video. I have the kit sitting in my garage. Just gotta get around to actually doing it.
It’s pretty easy, you only need a few tools 👌
I understand you get that first day off and all you want to do rest 😂😂😂
@@ProjectMini Finally got around to changing the fuel filter this morning. It was very easy with the help of your video. The hardest part for me was getting the top off the filter housing. Also had a little hiccup with seating the new blue gasket correctly. I had to watch a little further in your video when you explained the black gasket sits in the big groove of the blue gasket.
I’m glad it worked out for you! None of the videos i watched explain how the gasket seats so i made sure i did
explained very clear
So I did this job two days ago, and there were no leaks. I even went on a 20 mile drive… nothing. Today I went to fill up the tank, and there was a puddle of fuel under the car, below where the filter sits. No other leaks or drips since. What could it be?
Hi,
FYI : There is no fuel filter on the R56 One/Cooper NON-S under the passenger seat (except on Korean and US versions).🤔 Mine (European R56 Cooper non-S of july 2007) hasn't one under seat. The only filter is the small pad on the fuel pump located under the left passenger rear seat (it looks like a Senseo Coffee pad ). You can only clean this pad with brake cleaner or ... replace the entire pump.
On Diesel version, the filter is under the body on the left side of the car.🙂
Excellent video, thanks!
Dobra objasnjenja za pohvalu.
Hello my mini 2010 not have the same full pump that you show here.where i can find the full filter in mini clubman
I don’t show my fuel pump in this video. According to the bentley service manual your filter is in the same spot
Well this work on a 2004 S Mini Cooper are the filters the same on all of them
Any chance you could change your thumbnails that suggest r56 but relate to r56 Cooper S
Don’t forget to subscribe ruclips.net/user/projectmini
So how many days did your mini smell like fuel after this job ? At least they did the favor of adding that access panel so you can get to the damn thing without dropping the tank .
Mine didn’t smell like fuel at all, but I’ve heard of others have the smell for a few days
Great video. Well done.
What if you forgot to mark how tight it should be? Will that become an issue?
It might, just get it pretty snug without breaking it. If you smell fumes or have a leak tighten it more
There is a hole on the ring that marks the start of the thread - line it up a little bit counterclockwise to the tooth edge on the back edge of the filter housing. It will go one full turn and then stop. There is a stop pressed into the ring that prevents overtightening.
Thanks for the tips.
Does this process goes for Cooper s r56 2011?
Nice one. Thanks.
Thank you 🙏
Hey, ive got a 2008 r56 and im experiencing 2nd time start and slight rough idle problems, also sometimes under load it misses and no power could this be fixed with changing the fuel filter? Thought of trying this first until i replace the high pressure fuel pump. Cheers
Hello! Thanks for the video! I have a question based on the comments here suggesting that I release the fuel pressure first before changing the filter. How do I set it under pressure afterwards? Is the car doing it by itself when I fake start it like at the end of the video or do I do something specific?
Just turn the engine back on - the fuel pump will draw the fuel in and pressurize.
Really good thank you !
Squeezing thoes green tabs with a thin zip tie might be easier
That’s a good idea! I’ll try that next time
I am watching this video and I've done this job.
The gasket that goes inside the tank needs to go around the hole that you are putting it in. Its the hole in the actual tank.
I have another ring and I'll pull the filter out and reseat the gasket again
Thats what i would do
Would I use engine degreaser or brake cleaner to clean housing and around around?
A wet rag and some soap, probably. Mine was caked with with road dirt (we have a lot of dirt roads in our area) that had found its way to the top side of the tank. There's not likely to be any actual grease stuff that can't be wiped away with a rag. The main thing is you want the area clean to avoid getting dirt and debris into the seal, the tank, and the filter.
Thanks for the vid. I did the filter and the pump at the same time and now my fuel gauge reads exactly 50% and won't budge. Any advice is appreciated.
Your fuel level sender is probably caught on something, pull it back out and make sure to install it correctly
How much is that part??? Mine leaking gasoline from the top
Thank you sir
What part are you referring too?
@@ProjectMini fuel filter housing
I’m not sure, I’ve never had to replace mine
Is it necessary to disconnect the battery? I did that and now the electrics are all wrong, lights/locks dont work etc. Looking like its caused a problem with the FRM
You are working with the fuel system. It's always prudent to disconnect the battery when doing that to avoid spark hazard.
Hallo warum haben sie den filter gewechselt?
Was war der grund dafür?
Warum: der Filter wird irgendwann schmutzig und blockiert Benzin Zufuhr zum Motor. Alle 70.000km sollte der ausgewechselt werden.
Can you offer any advice to do this on an R59 Roadster?, There looks like a mountain of trim to remove first.
If the filter is in the same location it will be the same procedure
@@ProjectMini Yes I agree, but HOW to remove the trim/anti-roll hoops etc. in order to access the filter or pump??
I can’t help you there, I’ve never been within 100 feet if a roadster
Help!!! I replaced the fuel filter in a 2009 mini cooper s located underneath the back seat on the passenger side. Now it won’t start. Any ideas why? It was starting fine before. Thanks
Did u figure it out im having the same problem?
perfect show!
would it be a good idea to get a mini fuel filter from amazon?
I got mine from amazon and it’s been great
What fuel filter did you get from Amazon.
Sounds like the fuel pump... I’m no mechanic tho lol
definitely the high pressure fuel pump. mine was doing the same thing, i changed it, now it runs like a dream. try to find a junkyard mini, because it costs a pretty penny
Do you think it's a similar process with an 2015 r60 countryman?
I have no idea
How to change fuel regulator in mini copper
Putting rings how come you didn't use any kind of lubrication to make more easier to sleep in
Because it’s not needed
A tip to release the fuel pressure is to remove the fuel pump fuse or the relay and run the car until it shuts off. It shouldn't have any pressure after that.
At what mileage should this be done?
According to Detroit Tuned, it should be done every 80k miles. Mine was at 110k miles
@@ProjectMini doubt mine was done. I think it's at 150k and it won't run so I just did this, but the fuckin o-rings for the FUEL LINE are fucked up.
Hi I changed the fuel filter and now when running the mini it's losing fuel I've double checked the fuel filter to make sure its in properly and it looks ok.. Any ideas of why?
Where is it losing fuel from?
@@ProjectMini Thank you for getting back to me. On the fuel gauge. Where it tells you how much fuel you have. Only went round the block and it lost 4 miles. The performance of the mini isn't very good either. Did an oil and filter change to see if it was that but no success. Do you think it could be my fuel pump that's at fault?
@@joannesentance2621 is fuel leaking from anywhere?
@@ProjectMini no there isn't any fuel leaking. Well not I can see. I can't smell any fuel either.
changing out your batteries every once in a while they will screw up your foot well module and it cost you $150 to get them reflashed
I followed this, my car didn’t start … now what to do? 😟😟
You're not getting the fuel pressure up to pump the fuel due to a leak. Did you remember to put the large black o-ring back on? In the future it's probably better to ask for advice in one of the facebook groups linked in the description of the video.
@@interiorocean5750 the first kit that I installed was from Japanparts brand (cheap) so the orings broke and very hard to assemble. Then I bought BOSCH kit, very easy to instal and no problems so far after 1 week running ! 😉
@@ASFerreira Always glad to hear it when a Mini is doing fine! Sticking to name brands does tend to prevent headaches down the road.
Great vid! thanks a lot
Thanks
Whats the difference between a r14 and a r56
N14 is the turbo engine in R56 Cooper S and John Cooper Works and was later replaced by the N18 engine with double Vanos. R56 is the gen2 hatch body type, R55 is the clubman and R57 is the convertible.
Who the hell designed this system ? so much easier on most other cars , now I know why people moan about these cars in relation to maintenance.
That's why you can pick them up on the cheap side.
Imagine if there wasn't an access panel and dropping the tank was your only option.... Yes I did that on a 1978 VW Dasher... Yuck!!
I can't put this whole thing back into place at 19:50 minute.. Trying with all my strength and nothing.
Keep watching. 20:13 solves your issue
@@ProjectMini had to use WD40 on all rings. Managed to get it in.
Bom vídeo. Eu apenas não usaria tanto essa chave de fenda , corre o risco de danificar e sair mais caro
