It's STOVL so the ramp assists with the short take off of the F35B aircraft. CATOBAR was considered but fitting it became too expensive so the original ramp STOVL configuration was reverted to.

The ramp is there mainly because it’s cheaper and because we bought the worst version of the f-35.
