- As he does every Wednesday, FOX Sports CFB Analyst Joel Klatt stops by The Herd to talk the latest in college football with Colin Cowherd. Klatt weighs in on the committee’s most recent ranking of the top ranked teams. Klatt explains the biggest issue with the ranking system is the committee has brand biases that favor some teams over others. The two discuss the aftermath of Michigan State’s incident in the tunnel following their 7-29 loss to Michigan. The two also revisit Klatt’s Top 10 college teams and decide whether Michigan should be ranked higher than Ohio State.

@@malonmickey5207 lmao explain what’s wrong about his TCU argument? It’s all facts. He said OU was good back when everyone else thought they were good too. They were top 5 or 6 in the country for 3-4 weeks. Klatt is normally one of the most accurate analysts in all of CFB.
From the UK but Joel Klatt has had me in a chokehold since he started featuring on the Herd, he fully got me into college ball and now I prefer it to NFL. Every time Colin uploads a Klatt video I drop everything I’m doing to watch

That last 3 or so minutes was pure gold (the whole segment was but that in particular). Unreal chemistry between Colin and Joel. I look forward to this segment every week.

Ohio State’s last quarter against Penn State was incredible. Agree completely they went to 6th and 7th gear. However, I’d argue, they can’t replicate those gears on command because JTT had the single greatest defensive effort in a game I’ve ever seen and no human being can do that week in and week out. Nor will Clifford be there to make bad reads and mistakes to put them in a position to do so.
Well as a osu fan ill say its highly likely that your theory will be tested . Its our defense thats has been a huge questionmark every year we are in the playoffs.

I cannot wait for Michigan/Ohio State. I think Michigan will dominate the Buckeyes upfront, probably run for 300+ yards, but how many big plays will Ohio St generate in the passing game, and will Ohio St be able to run well vs. Michigan which no team has been able to for an entire game. Michigan has been on cruise control all season, they've had a couple subpar first halves, and they've absolutely rolled teams over in second halves
I think Michigan/Ohio St this year could be one of the most epic battles ever. A battle of the biggest rivals with starkly contrasting styles. And Buckeye fans should love the fact that Michigan is at or near their level, it makes the rivalry 10x better.

Thank god for Joel Klatt! You can tell this man just has a deep & sincere passion for the game. His takes never come across as biased to me, rather pointing out the glaring inconsistencies in the rankings from the “Experts” every week. Wonder where some of these programs would be if the committee didn’t give them the benefit of the doubt in EVERY SINGLE RANKING *cough* sec *cough*

The Michigan kid that got attacked went back early to the locker room because he's from Texas and his dad is a truck driver who drives up to see him and his twin brother play and can't hang around for very long after the game. They go back to the locker room right away every game.

One of the best segments on tv weekly. Colin and Klatt talking college ball is far and above better than any tv network talking about it.
I watch a lotta clips from all the sports shows, and Joel Klatt is one of the best guests on any show. Dude knows his stuff, and he's always clear, concise, and fair in his opinions and analysis. Plus, he usually slaps Cowherd around which is always great lol.
This interaction between the two is the best I have seen on this show.
One thing I don’t understand about the Clemson hate is, since when is it a bad thing to have a team that is capable of putting in a backup quarterback in order to help win the game. I do agree with Joel that these rankings matter when they’re used as justification later on

One of the best segments in awhile
Besides the two reasons Joel gave, a big reason these first CFP rankings matter is that they fix in stone the starting point each team has to prove it deserves any changes from. The committee can't just "change their mind" once these first rankings are posted. If they make a change, it is heavily scrutinized, often criticized, and the committee must defend it publicly. They basically cannot reanalyze the first 9 weeks now without losing credibility, all successive weeks' changes of opinions can only be based on what happens after week 9, and that makes changes much harder to make.
These first rankings assign the value of your first 8 games, a value which effectively cannot change going forward, and that makes them matter a lot.
I disagree with this take entirely. Example, If Cuse, Wake Forest, and NCSU all fall out of the top 25 and a team like Maryland jumps into the top 25, they then have no excuse to have Michigan or TCU below Clemson bc then Clemson wouldn’t have a top 25 win. The issue is they’ll put teams in spots to justify rankings.
@@YourAverageFan Actually I believe your example illustrates my point. Even if those three ACC teams each lose two more games but Clemson finishes undefeated, Clemson will not be ranked any lower than they are now. Once these initial rankings are posted, it is very rare to be dropped unless you lose, and therefore very difficult to move up unless teams above you lose.

@@alanmartin6436 I personally agree with that. But the problem is that would be counter-productive to the primary goal of the CFP, which is to build drama and TV ratings, ultimately to generate more money.
@@TonyM132 Moving up isnt hard, It happens all the time and thats my point. Michigan will jump Clemson if they win out. Last year Michigan jumped Bama and Cincy and then Bama beat Georgia and jumped Michigan. Yes Clemson will likely not move down unless they move but its very possible they could if Michigan and Bama or someone else jumps them.

I hate when people compare teams against a common opponent. I think Michigan and Ohio State are such different teams with their play styles that the their games against other teams are going to look wildly different. Michigan isn’t about scoring a ton of points, they like to control the game and clock with running and short passes. Ohio state is high flying offense. I would say that both teams have a big weakness on offense: Michigan has some red zone issues while Ohio State needs their O-line and run game to be better. Good for Collin and us as college football fans that we don’t need to compare them since they play at the end of the season though.
And folks like Colin, and an unfortunate majority of college football watchers, think that games played between common opponents have the same script. They don’t. Every game is different. We can say we have certain expectations based on games prior to this one, but we play the full game(s) for a reason.
OSU beat Iowa 54-10 and Michigan beat them 27-14 - if we're playing the stupid "common opponent" game.

Love that we compare the Penn State game and not the Iowa game
Let’s be real for a second…. How many times did Iowa turn the ball over in their own territory against OSU? How many against Michigan? Iowa shot themselves in the foot over and over again that game basically giving OSU a bunch of short fields to score a bunch of points. Statistics don’t lie man. That didn’t happen with the Michigan game. Iowa took care of the ball in that game. They made Michigan beat them in the trenches in that game. The two games shouldn’t be comparable just because Iowa is a common opponent for Michigan and OSU. The two teams play very very different on offense.

This week’s segment is the best segment Colin has had all year! Klatt was doing his best stuff man!
Joel hammered the Herd with facts. 😅
Michigan trailed against Maryland in the second quarter. They were tied with Indiana at halftime. Michigan State had the lead going into the second quarter. Michigan had to hold off an Iowa team in the 4th quarter who struggles to even score. Ohio State beat Iowa by 44 points. Yet Michigan is better because Ohio State trailed to Penn State on the road, but still won by double digits.
None of those games were even close to being in doubt. Scoring a couple garbage time TDs with a minute to go doesn’t mean anything. Their RB coach Mike Hart had a seizure on the sideline against Indiana in the first half and the team was going through the motions and came out and outscored indiana 21-0 after half. Wasn’t Ohio State losing to Notre Dame at half? Weren’t they losing to Penn State deep into the 4th quarter? They gave up 500 yards of offense to Penn State and Toledo scored 3 TDs. How does any of that matter?

@@martinyant8653 Michigan was up 34-19 and Maryland scored a garbage time TD with 40 seconds left in the game. No, it was never in doubt.
And we manhandled OSU last November, and our defense is better than last year and our O-line is the best in the nation AGAIN. It will come down to who executes best in The Game. "There can only be one." Neither team has gone up against the top 4 team this year. Will be a tremendous battle.

The playoff system needs to be expanded to insure fairness into the selection process. The top 4 teams don't always make it to the finals as sometimes a darkhorse gets hot and puts together wins. That's what makes it so exciting about expanding and giving more teams a chance to win.

IMO the most confusing part about the rankings of TCU being behind Bama is knowing Tennessee plays Georgia this week. Because if the Vols lose, you still have to keep them ahead of a Bama team they beat so basically the lowest they go is 5 then TCU is now behind 2 1-loss teams. I think if the Vols beat Georgia then TCU jumps them but I still think it was an odd choice and easily could have eliminated the headache by having TCU at 6
