You are such a troll. Saying that you hate the Astray in general and that this hate might affect the review before declaring the gunpla to be fantastic made me laugh.
with this review, I'm absolutely sold on this kit! I've never seen an episode or interacted with it outside of buildfighters but this review changed my mind!
I think I found my first gundam model to work on. Your weathering makes this kit look so great. I'm not sure if you posted a tutorial on how to do weathering like this but I would love to see how you do it as a beginner.
You are the one reviewer that I can compare with rrobbert184 after he quit couple years ago. Your building skill is better; your script and your narrative are as good as rrobbert184. Good to see new generation of gunpla reviewer coming out on youtube. Keep up with the good work! And thanks!
I've had my rg astray for two years now and I don't have that problem with the torso popping off as well as that nothing falls of except the in elbow parts when fully bent
Great review. At 2:52 you suggest the waist separation to be a safety feature, but this is actually a design flaw. When I built mine I noticed how it would separate and upon very close inspection found that there is a front and rear nub of plastic meant to interlock with the corresponding part when seated. These had pressure marks where the corresponding part hit in the middle of the nub rather than being able to lock just a half-millimeter further. I glued mine in place because there's nothing I dislike more than parts falling off my model when trying to pose it. I also agree that I don't like the look of the red frame for some inexplicable reason. But it is a fabulous example of what the RG line is all about and it has a lot of detail. I actually like it better than the PG version.
He didn't click the waist part all the way. It's actually a very strong connection probably the hardest part to separate if you wanted to disassemble the kit. I built this today no complaints.
After getting this I've started wondering once bandai runs out of main gundams to give the rg treatment to will they start making RG Build Fighter kits or give the BF kits the robot damashi treatment. There are a few from build fighters and build fighters try id like to see as rg's and rd's.
I just built this today and the waist connection is pretty snug as long as you fit it properly, press it with a lil force till you hear the clicking sound
Great review as always, Type V3! Just a question, can you use the RG Aile Strike's accessories? Specially the Aile Striker Pack. my RG Aile Strike was shot down and I wanna use its parts for this bad boy.
Straight off the bat? Nope, sadly. The connector is not the same width (the port in the Red Frame is narrower than the connector on the Aile Pack). Also, there are two (rather loose) red parts that sit between the shoulder parts and the torso of the red frame. They obstruct those two black rods that hang over the shoulder from the Aile Striker pack. So it won't be an easy mod, no...
Nah, he over-killed it. It may look amazing because he *painted* it, but it doesn't mean it was painted in a good way. If he was much more precise and held back a little bit, he would have an utterly amazing model.
Great review as always. If I ever get the Exia and Astray, I now want to pose them together after seeing that Exia vs Astray pose. Do you think a Gold gundam marker would work on the sword hilt and sheath?
Very nice review, I really like how close up the way you film this kit to show off the details. Just one thing that I need to get off my chest is relates to the paintwork... I thought it was a little overdone and messy :x
im new in GUNPLA...and i like this gundam...planning to get the BLUE FRAME RG...for my 3rd build...but need to do some finishing touches on my 2 gundam real grades...
Thanks Vince, Nice Review.. same here i had the difficulty in the waist section and tends to fall most of the time. looking forward for your upcoming reviews :)
I can't wait to get my hands on this kit. I had the MG...unfortunately I screwed the paint job up and didn't know soaking it in paint thinner would degrade the plastic...noob error...and I also have the PG. My only disappointment I have is that it was given the gun and shield instead of the buster sword and the second katana. Would it be too much to ask for its buster sword and second katana as some type of online exsclusive?
***** Do you plan on reveiwing the HGBF Lightining Zeta Gundam? And maybe the HGCE Freedom Gundam...if you get or got it? Your reviews are more informative than any others I've watched.
Another great review from TypeV3. Personally, I've noticed the same issues with other RGCE (SEED) kits... They all have the odd torso-lower body connection. You may be able to get it secure with a little extra force. The first time I fully seated my buddy's Strike Freedom, I thought I broke it. But it ended up just seating it and it hasn't come apart since unintentionally. It's certainly a weird design, and though the only other one I've built was the Exia, it seemed to use a much better system for connecting the 2 halves of the gunpla. Who knows, it might work for you too!
Er, it's a different issue this time. No amount of force will do the trick on this, it actually requires some acute modification. On closer inspection you will find that the two points that accomodate the upper torso on the lower frame are actually too close, and therefore you need to sand down the bottom of the torso connector. It's... a pain.
like all the little touch ups u did on ur gunpla! it is amazing! was it drybrushing? i always wonder if we shud put on the decals first then drybrushing or the other way round.
That is some sick paint job on that Astray!!! What kind of spray coating did you use? Do you put the decals on and then apply the coating or the other way around?
i dont get it why some people hate the weathering effect on this kit, it looks amazing to me. oh well, everyone has their own kind of view. anyway, did u find any way to stop the mid section to pop off easily?
+Igneos Kai Personally I find the weathering effect on his kits really cool and exciting, but I'd never go for it on my own kits since I prefer a clean and brand new look with simple panel lining and some custom paint aplications. It's just a matter of preference. But the way some of TypeV3's viewers get so enraged over his own opinion kind of surprises me to be quite honest.
i lost mine in the process..I brought mine in the outside for some photography the cockpit part loosen and when I went upstaira again to my room to pose it finally in nay display shelf..its gone...dammit...and I tried to find but it was too small it is like finding a needle in haystack
love your work. I just recently got into These and building them. However not sure what paints and spray tools to use. Could you possibly recommend or point me in the right direction. Thanks 😊
You should start a fb page just for toy photography. I love how you pose and angle the cameras. No need for photoshop editing. And i wanna learn more about photography in general. Since i do culinary and also loves cars.
+Mark Mejia Fantastic review by the way im more of a MG collector but I gotta at least have one of each grades to appreciate more of the world of gunpla. ;)
Oh come on, no need for expensive fancy stuff man. I learned that from all the fb pages i liked who are into nendoroids, figmas and other toy photography enthusiasts. :D
I actually chopped the barrel off the beam rifle, it makes it look like a shotgun and I think it makes it look better with the kit and keeping with the whole short range feel. Do you have a problem with the hands other than the RG hands not fitting well?
tldr: Excellent review, but the model will fit together properly at the hip, you just may have to attach the middle hip piece to the pelvis first instead of the torso/arms. Regarding the hip attachment/ab crunch thing: I recently purchased one of these kits and I was able to get the model to fit together solidly in spite of what this review states. it's just not easy compared to the rest of the assembly, and requires a bit of a trick. I was able to do it by assembling the inner frame first to test the moving parts and joints, the small hip piece between the pelvis and the torso where the katana sheath attaches to is the tricky bit (the piece is #4 on the plastic runner labeled 'B'). Don't follow the instructions directly, instead attach this piece to the pelvis BEFORE attaching the completed torso/arms to it. It will take a little bit of force, but as long as you apply it carefully, you can snugly fit this hip piece into the pelvis, and attach the rest of the torso into the peg socket to fit the legs and torso properly. I believe it's still possible i if you've completed the rest of the model, I would just recommend carefully removing the legs from the peg sockets in the pelvis first, and then carefully detaching the middle hip piece from the torso (may require some careful tool use to leverage the hip piece from the torso, a small flat-head screwdriver could help). Just want to say though that I still think this is a fair review, I instantly subbed and I've been enjoying many of your other gunpla reviews/videos. I've never built a gunpla before, and for my first one I really really like this kit so far. It was an entertaining and challenging build without being frustrating (minus the times I clumsily dropped a few tiny pieces into my carpet and had to excavate them with a magnifying glass, but that's my fault of course), and I never felt as if I was close to breaking any parts. As a lightly experienced model maker whose first experience in gunpla was this kit, I would definitely recommend it to any newcomer or of course anyone who likes the design (admittedly, I rarely watch/read Gundam and i picked this one out mostly because i like the katana and the color scheme, and it ended up being a good decision).
type v3 always watched your reviews and I have a question I am a newbie in regards of painting my gundams and I really want to know how, what you did and or use for those edges. thank you in advance
I'm torn between getting the RG Red Frame or the MG Red Frame. By with the RG double O Raiser and the RG Wing Zero Custom. I'm really having a hard time picking.
Wait...that's it? Just because something is ugly doesn't mean it's worth hating. I was thinking that you hated the Astray Red Frame for what it does in the manga. It's pretty insane and kinda ruins the real robot charm.
Models are either toys or a vessels for crafting something good looking. I TYPE V3 disliking the Red Frame for it's design in general and not the build and work on it. It's just the design. He finds it unappealing. Simple. So he has the right to call it ugly.
Some parts of the Lightning Z resemble the previous versions of the Zeta, naturally. However, even those parts belong to the new runners. Only one part is unused for the build, and its the neck polycap. :)
Got this for christmas as my first gunpla. My only complaint is that some of the parts are so small it makes it excruciating to put it together. I have another model coming in, should I use tweezers or is there anything else you recommend I should use?
SEED is great regardless of Astray's existence or not ~ this kit is pretty redundant, like we needed more Astrays that we already have =_+ I just finished my 1/100 Red Frame from 2004 and to be honest its fantastic enough already
Hi, Just wondering if the waist problem is really that bad? I mean, does it pop off when you pull it like that in your video or does it generally like to come off even with a light tap? E.g. I'm playing with it and another robot punch it directly to its chest area will it split in half? Sorry, I really want the RG Red Frame and the only thing holding me back is that waist issue.
i already done this kit, but...the red shoulder armors (near chest-before shoulders armors) kinda loose...i already follow the manual book...it must be loose like that? or there's something I've missed during the assembling process?
+geraldo aditya I find with gunpla that every once in a while you will get one with one or two loose parts that seem to only be a problem to you. It could be that you are missing something but odds are that you just wasn't lucky. I have a few kit with parts loose which bugs me but that just life.
Hi my favourite reviewer I have a question could u do a size comparison with this model kit to the high grade astray blue frame second L? If you have it u think that the real grade red astray is taller?
Out of the box, the joints are surprisingly tight. Enough time moving them around should loosen them up, though do take care and exert just enough force, and not too much so you don't break the joints.
+Jacob Godwin dont ever whine about stiffness. believe me you'll regret it when they get loose and cant even make a pose..:( My Freedom cant even raise his shield now bcos i badly loose it. ryt now, i cant find a way to stiffen that up, maybe someone can help..hehehe
+Sonny Boticario i've heard using super glue can help (not to glue things together, but to just coat a joint or socket while separated, let it dry, and hope that the extra material provides enough friction again). a quick search might reveal other methods, but that's all i've heard so far.
I know you said u arnt a fan of the red frame, but comparing the RG to the MG, in your opinion, which excels? i cant decide. is the rg articulation better than mg? and is the torso prone to separating from the waist or is that only when u do certain things?
***** Cuz it might gives you different feeling from the red frame, and won't be as intimidating and over complicated as the RG. Last but not least, the tactical arms weapon accesory is the true reason why the kit is still popular now.
Hi, i've got some questions about the sword. If u sand the sword, will it still be shiny? Is it just a chrome layer or full injection? Is it the same with the old HG?
It's chrome plated, if you sand it, the chrome layer will come off and you'll get whatever the original plastic color the piece actually is. So the piece won't shine anymore
You are such a troll.

Gundamninja7 Yup, gold marker would work just fine.
What colours should I use to paint this? Especially for the gold sword parts, vents and thrusters?
TYPE V3 Can you do a tutorial on how you painted your astray?
Don't ever paint like this guy, it's a piece of shit.
Can I ask? How did you build that hangar? It looks really nice.
Awesome review, I like the dirty look. BTW do u hand brush or air brush your kits, especially on those metallic paint parts?

You're thinking too far ahead. Those items are for the Red Frame Kai (the upgraded form of the Red Frame).

Didn't realize the difference. Besides the backpack
Lol in the Gundam universe a new, bigger backpack generally means "upgraded new form!"

Either way, I'm gonna get one as soon as possible. (Yes. I'm a huge fan of Astray Gundams.)
aznable1000 Maybe, ever so slightly? But I did bend the peg accidentally when building so it's probably just on my copy.
It shouldn't affect anything. Well, if you flatcoat the joints then all the tolerances will be tighter.
I actually chopped the barrel off the beam rifle, it makes it look like a shotgun and I think it makes it look better with the kit and keeping with the whole short range feel. Do you have a problem with the hands other than the RG hands not fitting well?
TarlZaralka Nope. Actually this is the first time I found the RG hands to be pretty capable.

Nope, the other hands work fine.

Thank you TYPE V3 for the great review! :D
Ayy V3 my man, I got a question. What product/technique did you use for the edges of the white parts' weathering and the dark smudges on the surfaces?
Blackcloud288 Dry brushed with gunmetal. That's it.
***** Thanks brother. It adds more scale to the model than I thought RGs could accomplish. Did you topcoat over the drybrush, or at all?
Here's my process:
Build>Paint>Panel Line>Decal/Markings/Stickers>Topcoat>Drybrush
Hope that helps.

type v3, what do you use for weathering black parts? i noticed its kinda silver

Speaking of RG, will you take a review of 00 QAN(T) ? Or the new RG Wing Gundam?
Nice review. Size comparison *stares at HGBF 1/144 Lightning Zeta Gundam*
That's Lightning Zeta right? Also Review? When?
which one i should buy? RG Exia or RG Astray Red Frame?
how would you paint the frame since its multi colored and I'm worrying about fucking the joints
the reason the torso pops out of the waist is because it isn't attached properly, you need to push it in more, it takes a bit of force though
can you also glue that part? I don't see why you cant just glue it together since those parts dont really move?
AnEpicPie well you don't need to glue it
well the way you say it, apparently everyone that done reviews doesn't know it clicks. But can you glue it on the safe side?
AnEpicPie yeah but just be careful to not get glue on any moving parts
thank you! I am going this now!
nice build! iIm glad you make a review of it 👍
I got 2 problems with this kit. 1. The legs are to stiff. 2 the real grade hands can't hold the katana. Is their anyway to fix any of those problems?
my top left leg joint is very stiff. i dont know why and what caused it but my astray's legs are very loose especially the left leg on the aerial pose
So why do you hate the Red Frame?
+Austin Grider (ArondightBerserker) Because it's ugly.
Wait...that's it? Just because something is ugly doesn't mean it's worth hating. I was thinking that you hated the Astray Red Frame for what it does in the manga. It's pretty insane and kinda ruins the real robot charm.

100% new mould and runners, absolutely nothing is a remould.
Though, there appears to be some spare parts of the previous zeta.
Some parts of the Lightning Z resemble the previous versions of the Zeta, naturally. However, even those parts belong to the new runners. Only one part is unused for the build, and its the neck polycap. :)

can you tell me how to mix the colors?
I painted it. Mystery solved.
+TYPE V3 yep i know but which paint was it?
What did you do to make the black plastic glossy ?
SEED is great regardless of Astray's existence or not ~ this kit is pretty redundant, like we needed more Astrays that we already have =_+ I just finished my 1/100 Red Frame from 2004 and to be honest its fantastic enough already
Hi i love your gunpla review can u make a video about how to make the weathering please like bullet holes and dirt
at the end..he said 00 raiser..and then showed the exia lol...good review though!
The main reason why the shield sits farther away from the arm might just be because it's exactly the same as the rg aile strike shield
+Codename C Yes it is that bad.
Nope. You have to push it down with a bit of force. Once done, it's hard to remove
Hello, can you teach us how to put decals, paint and glue. And what brand. Can you make a video? Thank you 😊 God bless!
Hi there Type V3, since you also have the Sengoku Astray, can you tell me if I can swap the Sengoku parts onto this RG? Thanks.
oh, can I convince you to actually do a video on just how practical or impractical this conversion is? Please?
What colours should I use to paint the sword?
i already done this kit, but...the red shoulder armors (near chest-before shoulders armors) kinda loose...i already follow the manual book...it must be loose like that? or there's something I've missed during the assembling process?
+geraldo aditya I find with gunpla that every once in a while you will get one with one or two loose parts that seem to only be a problem to you. It could be that you are missing something but odds are that you just wasn't lucky. I have a few kit with parts loose which bugs me but that just life.
+geraldo aditya They seem to be free floating, this confused me at first.
Which is better overall the lightning zeta or the rg astray
So I wonder what version of the Blue Frame we will get? Anyways, I can't wait to for my pre-order to come in for this guy.
How long did it take you to build with? Just putting it together?
What method did you use for the weathering?
Is this good? Which one should I buy? Rg quanta or this one?
It's an old vid but the the waist needs to be pushed in more to make it sturdy lol
Thank you
I just brought this kit and wonder why the waist keep pop off
What grade of Gundam Model kit were the legs and arms have no articulation and are in tiny boxes?
Makazuki Tsuki the tiny gundams are called SD or SG i cant remember
It was 1/144 scale o.o
Just wonder, will you do 00 Raiser and Gundam the End?
Type v3 quick question who is better of astray my or rug pls reply
whis is better to get this or the rg strike freedom im having a debate for which is gonna be my first rg and im also a begginer
love the paint job, did you use an airbrush or gundam markers?
A little bit of everything.
Hi my favourite reviewer I have a question could u do a size comparison with this model kit to the high grade astray blue frame second L? If you have it u think that the real grade red astray is taller?
Aizat Zahid Sorry, don't have any other Astray to compare it with.
Weird that I cannot move the ankle guards. Is it just really tight out of the box or do I need to cut something to make it move?
Out of the box, the joints are surprisingly tight. Enough time moving them around should loosen them up, though do take care and exert just enough force, and not too much so you don't break the joints.
How stiff are the joints? The only real grade I've built is the 09 Justice gundam and most of the joints, especially the knees, are terribly stiff
I know you said u arnt a fan of the red frame, but comparing the RG to the MG, in your opinion, which excels? i cant decide. is the rg articulation better than mg? and is the torso prone to separating from the waist or is that only when u do certain things?
jack liang Get the MG. Sounds like that would be better for you.
is there anything the RG has over the MG?
Try looking into the Blue Frame 2nd L HG maybe?
leonHHHtriple Why?
***** Cuz it might gives you different feeling from the red frame, and won't be as intimidating and over complicated as the RG. Last but not least, the tactical arms weapon accesory is the true reason why the kit is still popular now.
....but the reason I like this kit is because it is super overcomplicated.
Can the RG astray red frame be compatible with the RG aile strike flight unit? Everyone?
Are we still getting a MG Exia Dark Matter review?
We did! I think Prime92 did it for us! :D
How did you do the detailing with the silver and grays? just brushing on pastels?
Oligarchy Drying brushed with black on the silver, and silver on the grey.
+TYPE V3 do you do it on bare plastic or gloss coat? And dry brush with acrylic paints or pastels?
Acrylic paints. Doesn't matter what type of surface in my experience.
+TYPE V3 thanks as always! When I get the kit I want to do the style you did it in, looks so sweet.
