One of the West Yellowstone greats... Not many left any more. I saw him last year at Food Roundup. I think he still owns and works at Jacklin's Outfitters on Yellowstone Avenue.

Great fly. Thanks for the whip finish lesson too. As a true southpaw, i can't use a tool because its backwards for me. Now i can do one without the tool.

Everybody seems to get sooo persnickety about the shape of the head. I've got Bob Jacklin - undoubtedly one of the best American tyers, period - showing me that the head CAN be a little more crude than many other tyers suggest, and still be effective! It constantly makes me recycle a question over and over in my head: are we tying flies for FISH, or are we tying flies for FISHERMEN!? Love this demonstration and will keep it on hand as a reminder that a muddler head can be less shaped and still be "right".

You pose a great question and the more I film tiers, I have to think it's both. There's a large amount of artistry and craftmanship involved in tying as well as effectiveness of the pattern. -H

Nice job.. I sometimes make mine with a buck tail wing ...seems to catch lots of Brook trout. Can you make the yellow version that is your favourite brook trout fly? I am in Nfld. and Brookies are my favourite trout. I am self taught , tying for fifty years.

This is a very enjoyable and quite instructive video. When I first learned to spin deer to tie Muddlers in the 1980s,I got so excited that I tied enough originals and variations to last 30 years. When back issues stopped my fishing, I stopped tying until I discovered the Healing Waters program welcomed fly donations. Now that I’m preparing to tie a large batch of Muddlers again, I’ve been watching as many videos as I can to see how the best tyers tie the Muddler, and this is the best video that I have found. Please convey my respects and compliments to Mr. Jacklin on a great and helpful video. Thank you for sharing this video.
p.s. what glue was Mr. Jacklin using for the intermediate stages of the fly?

Thanks so much for the comment and for helping such a great organization like Healing Waters. I'm not sure what glue he was using on this but I'd encourage you to reach out to his shop at (406)646-7336 or jacklinsflyshop.qwestoffice.net/ (google may give you a warning it's not a safe site, but it is)
