    In this video, I go over how I use Span to level my synthesizers, basslines, and look out for errors in my mixdown. SPAN is a tool many of you will see me use on tracks where I fear something sounds iffy with the power of my ears and eyes I can DIAL IN SOMETHING THAT WE BOTH AGREE SOUNDS NICE!

    Nice video showcasing a great way to use SPAN. I recommend personally using the Mid-Side preset in SPAN so you can see mid vs. side information broken out at the same time, and to study reference tracks to see their mid vs. side breakdown as well.
    I think it's great you showed the approach of using SPAN and leveling first and foremost, rather than always trying to tackle everything with EQ. Starting first and foremost with leveling is probably the right way to go about it in getting like 80% of the way there, and then EQ can be the tool to bring out for tonal shaping and giving space between any two elements that may be masking each other. Leveling is the first step to aiming for a good balance.

    I think they have a new free version too.... Some new analyzer.... I need to go look. But, yeah, Span, baby. And you can dial in the speed so that you can see smaller variations of that can help in some situations.... Click on the little icon on the upper right and start twisting knobs. Wooo!

    I've always relied on my ears and I /think/ I've gotten fairly good at it, but I don't have good headphones and my hearing is damaged. I've always wanted to learn to use spectrum analyzers cuz everyone is always saying "Span is good!" but never teaching how to use it. Now I have a framework to learn and train my ears better, hopefully making my mixdowns sound at least a bit better. Thanks!

      Span is incredibly capable. Most people use about 5% of it at most, which is ok, but if you dive in, you'll find it can tell you a lot.

    So, would span user guides have like.... "usual spectral images of different genres?" Ear is god, but say we were completely deaf and there is a gun pointed in your head to mix - would it be viable to have some certain spectral patterns in your mind when dealing with different kinds of jazz, rock, rap, ska etc. ? (This is like, nothing concerning usual instruments used in different genres - only the spectral inf)

    • @ZenWorld
      @ZenWorld  8 месяцев назад

      Yes somewhat but it doesn’t guarantee a 100% MIXed track there’s much more to it. But it helps in quality control and leveling of elements that take up chunks of our Freq

  • @threeMetreJim
    @threeMetreJim 8 месяцев назад +1

    Is it a coincidence that the spectrum display is roughly the inverse of human hearing sensitivity vs frequency?
