  • Why are Babylon 5 ships bigger than other scifi vessels?
    Babylon 5's ships often appear larger compared to other sci-fi series due to the show's emphasis on realism and practicality. The series focuses on world-building and attention to detail, including the design and functionality of its spacecraft. The larger size of Babylon 5 ships allows for more diverse roles and capabilities, reflecting the complexity of their missions within the show's narrative. Additionally, the majority of the space within the ship is taken up by the vessel's engine and weapons. Overall, the size of Babylon 5 ships serves both narrative and practical purposes which enrich the storytelling experience of the series.

    One of the reasons is also that the main capital ships and even escorts may be out and patroling or fighting for months on end.
    Also the lack of much hand wavium means more space. Also a lot of them were designed to move people as well as patrol.

    The jump gate drives of the younger races were large and required large ships. Sheridan made the point that the White Stars were exceptions when he said the Shadows would not expect such a small ship to be jump-capable. There were many smaller ships, but they were limited to using jump gates, or following the larger ships into battle.

  • @joshpetersen5968
    @joshpetersen5968 2 месяца назад +6

    There are several reasons for the size of ships is Babylon 5. 1) With some exceptions they have no shields so have to rely on armor to absorb attacks and armor tends to be massive. 2) It can take several weeks to months to reach some destinations so they have to devote a good portion of the mass of the ship to storing supplies. 3) The FTL drive they use is a very power intensive beast. It needs massive amounts of power to open a jump point so they either need VERY advanced reactors(and Capacitors to store the power until they can build up enough charge to actually activate the jump drive) or have absolutely massive reactors and capacitor banks tied into the jump drive to use it. It was a plot point that the White Star was the SMALLEST ship able to independently jump.(Which is a ship bigger than a Nimitz class Supercarrier)

      @@mikefish8226 None of the onscreen ships had anything like Star Trek bubble shields. In the lore though some of the more obscure races did have them(I think one was the Abbai, but they were pacifistic and their weapons didn't really measure up) Also the Minbari and Centauri in lore could project weak gravity fields out from the hull to weaken weapons fire hitting their hull(as a secondary effect of their gravitic drives they use for sublight.) With the Vorlons or Shadows they really went all in on their bio armor.(The Vorlons learned from each hit and adapted to reduce damage, and the Shadows had armor that dispersed the energy of a hit over the entire hull, reducing the weapons effects)

    I know for star trek ship size can effect warp speed. In voyager they fought this ship so big that 7 of 9 said it could probably only do warp 7, so they noped right out of that fight. Also replication tech helps keep the size down.

    There were lots of smaller ships we just do not see most of them. The necessity to keep production on time and in budget would have forced the show makers to put in what was necessary and some eye candy to fill out the world. Bigger ships are just more important, that and fighters especially since Babylon 5 depended on them for defense, scouting, and other reasons. But ships like the White Stars were smaller ships, so were some of the Vorlon, earth, and Centari transports. Again, I think a lot had to do with time and budget, and also computer power which was stretched to it's limits at the time the space visuals were made for this show.

So ships are large, because they need all the components and supplies and they're few and far between, because cost to build one is gigantic :D

    One of my absolute favourite moments in B5 was when President Clarke tried coming after Babylon 5 & her senior staff after human forces went up against human forces & reinforcements jumped to support Clarke's forces then the Minbari & Da'lean jumped in & told them to withdraw Babylon 5 was under Minbari protection they tried to argue 'negative Babylon 5 is under our authority you withdraw or we will open' for one of the coldest replies in sci-fi 'Why? Only one human has ever survived battle with the Minbari he is behind me you are infront if you value your lives be somewhere else' que the clip of earth force ships doing tighter turns then ever seen in the show jumping straight away from the combat zone it was electric one of those epic moments others try to live up to probably 'on your right' in end game came close

    *Points finger at Warhammer 40K* - Nope, your ships in B5 be small! In Warhammer even an escort vessel (like say a Sword-Class Frigate!) is bigger than many ships in B5...sure the Omega-Class is longer (1700 meters compared to 1600 meters), but the Sword has a lot more mass and in 40K it's considered a "dinky little ship" (they use those to hunt pirates, escort convoys etc.)...while a cruiser? Yeah, those are BIG! Several kilometers in length and massive! Hell, if you want to go really large: Ark Mechanicus or Imperial Battleships! Those are larger than the Babylon Stations!

    Because so many Sci Fi people seem love unrealistically large ships. One of the best things about the original Star Trek series is the ships had a more realistic size to them. More like what a real vessel would be like.

    • @aimmlegate
      @aimmlegate Месяц назад +1

      Start trek is the least realistic popular sci-fi setting. It’s full borderline ridiculous technologies that exist only to justify real world budget constraints. Like transporter or replicators, or shields and “structural integrity fields”. Or panels made from rocks and explodioum.
      Any realistically feasible interstellar space ship will be just enormous, because energy requirements for interstellar travel are enormous. Funnies thing - trekies contatantly associates bigger ship size with better tech level, which is just plain stupid.

  • @superiorsoldier57
    @superiorsoldier57 3 месяца назад +1

    So... basically Babylon 5 has ships that are at about the same level of realism as Star Trek, Andromeda, Farscape, or Star Wars...

    • @acmenipponair
      @acmenipponair 2 месяца назад

      Yes, it's highly realistic that interstellar travelling species have BIG ships. Because they need them, for the energy production facilities, the crew that needs to be on board, for the fighter jets, for the hydroponic units etc. You can even see, that BIG means "not much evolved", as the ships get smaller, the more advanced they are (a shadow ship or a White Star are much smaller). And that's quite realistic, normally you first need to build big to achieve your goals and then you start to miniaturize. The first computers were big monsters, while needing seconds to multiply 2 times 2. Nowadays you have a computer in your pocket.

  • @tomascernak6112
    @tomascernak6112 2 месяца назад +1

    You are wrong. Out of universe reason is, that showrunners had small wieners so they were compensating. In-universe explanation is primitive technology of all major races, so they were bad in miniaturization. For example if you do not have artifical gravity generator, you need to have centrifugal force generator. And practical minimum diameter for such generator is half a kilometer.
    And real explanation is simple insuficient VFX budget. Because of that, they rely on CGI. But CGI then was pathetic, so no details were possible. And when you have huge ships, details are somewhat blurry if you have in view whole ship.
