Hi Phil. The last time I saw West Brom at night was in Feb 1972.The night before I got married. All 20 of us women went to the Hop Pole for drinks. On leaving the pub we are all ravenous and we got fish and chips from the Atlantic chip shop on Carters Green. We were a bit tipsy, but not drunk. We did the most heinous of things and ate the fish and chips on the way back to Sue's.Back then it was considered uncouth to see women eating in the street. The next night my husband and I spent our wedding night in the Gateway Hotel in RAF Brize Norton. On the Sunday we flew out to Hong Kong for 2years.I had made the rank of Corporal and was looking forward to starting a new life and still staying in the army.I left upon completion of 9 years and was a Sergeant.Happy days, never to be repeated.
Hi Phil, greetings once more from Ireland. Still enjoying your channel. Many a Saturday night was spend socialising in West Bromwich in the 80s. The night always ended in Sparkles Night Club. Great memories.
My old home town! Looks nothing like it used to in the 70's and 80's... I wouldn't even consider walking that route on my own now. You're a brave man 😂.
I remember there was a Marksman, an Oddfellows Arms and both an Old and a New Hop Pole on Carter's Green late 90s. Definitely more than now. Like on many of the high streets you film I am just shocked at the number of takeaways!
Hi Phil enjoyed the walk from the Upper High Street to Carter's Green I remember the Dartmouth pub and the under ground Toilets had large Heavy doors that looked more like a jail it was nice to see the Sandwell pub doing well has the Pool Hall been reopened and I was a member of the steering wheel Club .I liked the way they refurbished the old Geust show Room all the best Paul
I could have said that the casino is quite likely the number one spot for entertainment but you couldn't see inside to see how many were in there. Its been there for some time now so I suppose it must some decent custom. Thanks again for your input

Great video Phil,it's grim in west brom,I remember a pub you used to go downstairs to at the top half of the town,it was next to woolworths, the casino has a great restaurant in there,it used to be packed on a Sunday afternoon as they did a Sunday carvery,it was pretty well priced as well,if you had carried on past the clock on carter's green I noticed that are doing something with the old car showroom but I don't know what?
One or two have mentioned the Hornpipe next to woolies. I was wondering recently what they are doing with the old car showroom i will see if I can find out and i will mention it on my Community tab, check this section out from time to time. Cheers for the comment Mr Dj
Glad you safely got out of there okay; brave of you, I've never been drinking down west brom at night; dont think I ever will. I'll stick to wednesbury, when I go down there once in a blue moon.
I tell ya summat, at one time you couldn't move up West Brom High Street for the crowd's. You'd go up on a Saturday and you could spend ALL DAY there and you'd see people you knew. Queen's Square was THE PLACE to shop when I was a kid. I used to love the fountain outside the old Tesco.
Where you said Safeway once was (now JD Gym at the start of your walk). That became West Brom’s first B&M store from 2006 until the store on Astle Park opened. I worked there from 2006 through to 2014 when I transferred to the Birmingham City Centre store. I still work with the company at another of their stores and approaching my 18th year as a B&M employee
Glad you ok after walking about town on the night & can't get over how riffy it is..I would have thought the street cleaners would've been after the main shops shut..Fair play to The Wheat sheaf pub, they've been brilliant for supporting bands & keeping live music going in the area..I don't think a lot of people are aware of West Brom's music history tbh which is a shame..For example, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin was from here as was Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy & many more probably..It's sad that they've put his statue at the back of the public where nobody sees it 😒 They should put it on the hight st at least..As for a night out I'll stick with Brum as it's got more selection & it's better for gigs bab😉🤘
West Brom certainly aint what it used to be and I wasn't aware that the Wheatsheaf puts on live music, there ought to be more of this in the Town but the council would never sanction it nowadays. Many thanks
Great vlog Phil. What a change for the worst aye. The litter & rubbish carelessly thrown on the floor is disgusting, council should be ashamed for not keeping our streets and drainage clean... complete opposite. Defo feels looks unsavory at night. What sums the high street up for me is the low quality of shops, depressingly POOR. The high st used to be the hub of the community... Not anymore in my opinion, just full of DRAB!
Dunno Phil,my recollection of the early mid 90s was that we might go for a pint or two early in town but we would go out to kinver or somewhere out in the sticks, somewhere a bit smarter and the like for a decent night out as the centre was a bit dodgy even back then...mind you it's all relative I think dodgy now has a rather different definition!
Shame what its become grew up there from about 8 years old till 18 watched it being built used the pubs clubs cinema PFC was a KFC back in the day i try and stay away from there now just don't fell safe great video stay safe
Phil, your passion for West Brom shines through dude , if you ever thought of running for the council you would get my vote but I think even if you had Elon musk's backing it would be a big ask for micro pubs and a jazz club on the princess parade..but a nice idea hopefully im proved wrong
It'll never happen. I know, but goodness me that part of the High Street is awful. If only we had a council that cared about the town. Civic pride died a long time ago. As always many thanks for your comment
Well you're not the only one with a vision..there is a short RUclips video from the chair of the West bromwich town centre partnership from over 12 years ago that echoes your ideas. its produced by Sandwell arts trust entitled west bromwich town centre portas pilot application dunno if he is still in charge but he should keep his head down!
Check out Disco Dave's Pub Reviews. I reviewed the Clock House today and have previously done the Queens Head, Church Lane and The Jinglers. You missed out the Billiard Hall and New Square, The Interceptor.
I looked mainly on the High Street Dave and yes there were a few others that would im sure be quite popular on a Saturday night, I will have a look around these parts in the future probably on a cold, winters night. Thanks for the comment
The Old Hop Pole is still trading on the corner of Guns Lane and has been since 1867. The Marksman is now a polish shop in 2008. It used to be called The Cross Guns and has been there since 1644 but was rebuilt in 1973. The Oddfellows had been around since 1868 but it became part of a wallpaper shop in 2009. Everyone stays at home because they don’t feel safe going out. Sadly West Bromwich is lost due to the official vandelism of the people we elected to look after our once beautiful town.
Nothing going on over there either, huh? It's no different in the US in most places, unless you're in a big city or something. Regular towns, small towns.. everything is closed... everyone is at home.. and anyone who IS out and about on the street by then are likely BAD NEWS anyway! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ It looks more peaceful there at least.

Years ago ( 80's ) we all used to meet up in the Sandwell Pub and finish the Night in Sparkles Night Club !! Falling up the spiral Staircase 🤣🤣
