J.S. Bach: Complete Lute Music

  • No more than a handful of pieces represent the entire musical heritage for baroque lute by Johann Sebastian Bach - not a lot when we consider the enormity of the composer’s total output. Although it is not known whether Bach himself played the instrument, the seven works which are ascribable to it continue to enjoy extraordinary attention on the part of musicians due to their exceptional quality, and indeed the majority originate from the areas of Germany that were home to the lute’s greatest exponents - musicians who we can be almost certain the composer came into contact with.
    This recording thus presents four compositions in suite form and three pieces of a different nature, all belonging to the florid repertoire of the courtly Salonmusik that was in vogue among the German upper classes at the time. Performing them is acclaimed Italian lutenist Mario D’Agosto, whose changes in tonality aim to better serve the capacities of the instrument (BWV 996 and 997, for instance, were written for the ‘Lautenwerk’, a sort of lute-harpsichord favoured by Bach) and whose embellishments are testament to the high level of ornamentation which played such an intrinsic role in baroque performance practice.

    REST IN PEACE Mario D'Agosto.... He died a few days ago. He was my guitar teacher in public middle school in Rome, Italy.
    An incredibly patient and loving teacher and person, he emanated class and beauty in abundance. Truly a man form another time. He looked like he came out of the Baroque era to bring us some beauty.
    I really adored him and looked at him as the ultimate role model, until at some point I was foolish enough to "rebel" because I wanted to play electric guitar while I "had to" play classical guitar at school.
    Instead of giving me bad grades or hard times, he let me play the electric guitar in most lessons and agreed on teaching me classical harmony instead of classical guitar playing, execution, reading etc.
    At the final exam, I was the only one with an electric guitar, playing a version of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" arranged by the two of us. The first part was a "baroque" arrangement of the jazz piece and the second was me improvising over the chord changes... That was quite unheard of in that school.
    He put a lot of trust in me even if I didn't really want to follow the classical path.
    That goes to show what an intelligent and caring individual he was.
    I still stand by that choice as the electric guitar is still my main instrument, but in the last 2-3 years of development as a musician, I came to realize how huge Mario's impact was on me in my early years of guitar playing.
    An incredible soul and what an incredible player. He played with the same grace he talked and gave precious advice to those who really wanted to learn.
    I'm terribly sorry about his passing.

Bach is a self-sufficient wonder and does not require the skills of any interpreter to bring the marvel out of the scripture. But it appears Mario d'Agosto quite simply became Sebastian for the purposes of this recording. How wonderful, I am so grateful. Bach was a professional who undoubtedly wrote for whatever instruments his customers paid him to whether he personally played those instruments or not (as I recall, he was primarily an organist). The lute was still a popular instrument in his day, so it would have been surprising if he didn't write for it.

    Beautifully & strongly played; very well produced. I think D'Agosto's approach to the ornamentation is quite masterful; &, to my ear, sounds authentic - the lute itself, & his skill, allow a powerful continuo feeling, "momentum," if you like, in the resonant bass strings, while, of course, embellishments are expressed most clearly in the treble. Far from flashy - understated, inspiring, worthy of Bach, in his day or ours. Thanks!

      Artemesia Gentileschi. One of the great painters of the ciaroscuro I think. Has been so long since I studied that...love her painting depicting Judith beheading Holofernes...awesomely gruesome.

    This is great! Bach is my favorite composer. Great video, but one caveat...for some reason the audio cuts out at about 1:23:00 or thereabouts. I know it's not my device, because I have a nature video also playing, and the sound on it is fine. Odd. Well, on to a Mozart or Impressionist video I see that you have in my Recommends. Again, another than that one snag, this is a great video that I enjoyed very much!

    Chants parfaits pour lire les formes subjectives des nuages et suivre d'un œil attendri les rainures des tiges des arbres; apprécier l'écriture complexe des branches imbriquées, goûter les couleurs de la décomposition de la lumière en gouttelettes d'eau dans un jardin, et ressentir fortement le sol humide de la forêt ancestrale pour percevoir les traces des animaux du passé profond¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @jeanlismonde8718
      @jeanlismonde8718 3 года назад +1

      "formes subjectives des nuages" voudrait dire que les nimbus et cumulus sont des êtres vivants, "écriture complexe des branches imbriquées" signifie que les arbres communiquent entre eux et échangent des sentiments ; "percevoir les traces des animaux du passé" laisse penser que les êtres vivants laissent forcément un message par leurs pieds aux lointains descendants....
      bravo en tout cas pour votre poème scientifique !

    Are these often played by two players or are the bass lines being played at the same time as the upper melodies by one person?? It is so intricate for one person..

    • @MegaSlamDunc
      @MegaSlamDunc 4 года назад +1

      Mario plays a variety of lutes. If you are hearing a lot of bass lines then he is probably playing a teorbo. Look it up and you will see where the bass notes are coming from. The teorbo is a baroque instrument built to add depth to the smaller Renaissance lutes.

    • @Chris-cf2kp
      @Chris-cf2kp 4 года назад

      @@MegaSlamDunc Ah yes I am familiar with them. Still, it doesn't ease having only 5 fingers available for use for contrapuntal playing haha. It's very impressive playing for one person.
