I remember him in the ABA in Pittsburgh. Way beyond anyone else on the court.

My pops would tell me stories of Hawkins at the playground. He was born and raised in NY. He would travel from Yonkers just to go see him play.

I only saw CH when he came to the NBA. Even though he was moving toward the end of his career he still had the skills to be really good and like the Pistol very entertaining. Just going to a game and watching how he handles the ball was worth the price of admission. Plus if you ever heard him talk, he had a great sense of humor. A reporter said to him in an interview, " Connie, what do you do to improve your game in the off season?" his reply " I leave it alone."

This is a great documentary. Thanks for sharing!

Stuff like that could have been shown in 5 to 10 minutes....but they dragged it out for 46 minutes.....not good documentary making supposedly about Connie Hawkins, I saw it because of his name and had to endure lots and lots of what is called ' filler'...shucks !

The way he made use of his big hands and his ability to palm a basketball is unique. I’m surprised more players haven’t copied that. Maybe that’s because no one else can do it without committing turnovers.

I got to see so many talented players from that time, it would do a lot for fans today to take a look at the wonderful players from this time. I remember listening on the radio to Chick Hearn calling the Laker games.

I think Connie Hawkins' game and his gifted style intimidated that early 1960s NBA era. His style was years ahead of that game during that early 1960s era and I think the NBA intentionally set up Connie Hawkins because they feared the league would have gotten embarrassed and many other black players with similar abilities to Hawkins would have flooded the NBA in droves and they couldn't have that. I mean, he was basically the prototype of Julius Dr. J. Erving in terms of his artistry. First, there was Bill Russell drafted 1956, Wilt Chamberlain drafted in 1959, and Connie Hawkins was a freshman in college in 1961 and they took 8 years away from Hawkins who was not drafted until 1969. The NBA and the powers that were truly screwed him over big time.

It was arrogance, not fear. All the owners cared about was money, and the fact that the Harlem Globetrotters regularly played doubleheaders with NBA teams kills the racism theory. The college game fixing scandals of the 1950s were a threat the economically weak NBA could not have withstood, and since they were the only force in hoops they felt no compunction about dumping a guy affiliated with Jack Molinas (a Pistons All Star also banned from the league).

@@skineyemin4276First of all relax man, Im a big fan of Connie Hawkins. I believe that he is a playground Legend, and perhaps the most talented small forward ever to play the game before Julius Erving and Larry Bird. An offensive force and a shot creator who was quick, agile and a great leaper. Second Im from Greece, a country with great history and civilization. And third I need some proof about those accusations.

While he was a freshman in college he borrowed some money from Jack Molinas, who had met when he graduated from high school. His brother, repaid the loan back the following summer, but Hawkins unfortunatelly was thrown off the team and out of college UNFAIRLY, after allegations for something that never happened. It has nothing to do with his colour of his skin. It has to do with the stupiduity of the NBA officialls at that time.

I remember when the Hawk finally made it to the NBA. There was a lot of buzz about him. He was a known playground legend. He could’ve been one of the greats if he came up at 22 instead of 28.
I read his book Foul like a hundred years ago and it’s one of the better sports books.

Be clear: Hawkins sued the NBA for restraint of trade and anti-trust. He got into the league because it caved and settled with him. He was a very old 28 when he entered the NBA, so he only had a few really good years. He won a million-dollar settlement and a huge contract with the Suns.
Connie is in the Hall of Fame, but he missed out on being named to the NBA's Top 50 (later, 75). He belonged there. He's definitely better than almost everyone on those lists.

Read that book maybe 30 years ago. It indicated, how the powers can ruin a person's career like Connie. He was as innocent as anyone in basketball, but they had to punish somebody for alledge gambling.
I saw Connie play once in an exhibition game. He put one of the best moves on Bob Lanier by holding the ball behind his back and then bringing it over his head to dunk it.
The book is really good, written by his attorneys. He was robbed, and if you can talk to any of b ball stars of yesterday's games, they would say he could have been one of the best basketball players of all time.
    Great book.
