I have been using PeaZip portable for years and I recommend it highly. I can open anything I need without installing anything.

Nature of my work forces me to work with linux, mac and Windows. I usually use 7zip as an archive manager. I gotta say Peazip caught my eyes as an alternative, as I miss the GUI for 7zip in both mac and Linux.

It's a shame 7zip doesn't have a GUI frontend in Linux. At least we have PeaZip!

Isn't peazip a fork of of 7zip? Or have I been misinformed

  • @kernelcortex

If I remember it right. Peazip has password & key file encryption methods. You can choose one or combine both together when compress (and decompress) archive. Which will made your data a lot harder to brute-force decryption.

This is great for integrating more Windows users. They could use it there and eventually switch to Linux with less effort because what they use on one is on the other. I'll have to recommend it to newbies. My method is to use less to browse contents if I need to see what's in them before decompressing, then to tar -vxf archive. The version of less I use can recognize many archive formats and does all the necessary work to list for me. So I can do `less archive.{zip,tar.{gz,bz2,xz,*},7z}` and probably more that I never encounter, and tar handles -vxf without needing the switch to determine format.

My favorite archive manage is BSDTAR. For a gui file-roller and peazip do the job well enough, I used bsdtar and zstd's cli tool (separately) to turn a 16GB directory of family photos into a 9GB tar! Also, BSDTAR is only one letter away from being an anagram for bastard, which is the coolest detail I noticed while writing this comment

For some reason Peazip takes a couple of seconds to open even the smallest files but 7zip does it instantly.

Nice. What about a download manager? I use IDM on windows and I can't find an alternative for linux. I've tried XDM, but ... if a download stops, it is impossible to resume it in XDM, I have to start over. I can't find anything that can compete with IDM.

Have you tried `wget -c`? I've had files stall and fail with browsers and just paste the URL on the terminal and wget -c works to finish it. If you want a GUI app, you're probably out of luck unless you write it yourself.

I installed the 9.5 QT5 version of debian package in Kubuntu 23.10 and many of the compression modes give errors. I'm not sure, but was the portable version that had all the extra libraries? Most of the PAQ compression modes didn't work, atleast one mode in 7zip.

Me too. I use Ark in my GUI filemanager, as it is integrated into it. And whenever I need commandline or scripting, 7z is there to help me out. Also sometimes Ark does not support some formats or files, where 7z again is the hero to save the day.
