A similar thing happens when you are exposed to the dark long enough. Like if you are in a bathroom with the light off or in a closet. When you lose your senses your mind plays some weird tricks on you.
think of how ruff it would be to be some one on a boat on a starless night then your boat sinks. Your just floating there alone with so little sensory input..... just your mind eating itself
There are some places where you can be in complete darkness, meaning that unlike in a dark closet, where light can still sneak in and your eyes can slightly adjust, you see nothing. But like you said, your mind tricks you. If you wave your hand in front of your eyes, you think you see your hand, but you can’t, you just know where your hand is and your brain thinks it sees it.
