Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Howard's Testimony Against Jimmy | Chicanery | Better Call Saul
/ breakingbad
"He had a lot of get-up and go. He was a hard worker." That's Howard right there. Honest to a fault. Even when lying or skewing the truth would help the case, he still plays it straight.
Because of Howard’s character development, when you hear him call Jimmy “Charlie hustle” in the beginning you think he’s being facetious until you realize it was fully genuine
howard only exist in fiction 😥
Do not ever lie when testifying that destroys your credibility as a witness
no reason to Perjure himself on Jimmy's account
@@miketalkstoomuch Never realized this use of the word Hustle's double meaning. Fantastic writing.
The oh so subtle “you got me” side smile Howard gives after asked who the other Hamlin is is a complete testament to Patrick Fabian’s grasp of this role
Not necessarily. His delievery is great, but there might as well be a literal "tiny smirk" in the script. Show has great writers and directors, it isnt always easy to know who did what from the outside
@@xardas149 he still has to do it well. And he did it well.

Howard Hamlin is the most tragic story in ALL of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. He had no horse in the game, no want to beat any system he didn't need too cause he was good enough to just be good enough. What a magnificently written character top to bottom.
I thought the same thing. He did not deserve that
I'm not sure he's the most tragic, even though he never got involved with the game he never really went through any of the tragedy that people like Jesse and Nacho did. He's an excellently written character nonetheless.
He wasn't tragic at all until they randomly killed him off.
And everyone will think he was a addict and offed himself
@@soul0172 i agree with you, i think jesse is the most tragic character but the most tragic death belongs to howard no doubt, nacho is second imo
There's something about Howard's voice that just commands respect and trust....could very well be a good salesman if he wasn't a lawyer

@@Bigryan25 it's to force Howard to admit that Chuck was the one that refused to hire Jimmy and it helps to build the case that Chuck hated Jimmy and was trying to sabotage his legal career
@@Bigryan25 2:06 Howard said Jimmy wasn't hired because it may appear as nepotism (Chuck is a partner).
Kim questions the answer (nepotism) at 2:15 by making the point that Howard's father hired him (2:23).
@@jkxss ohhh shit
I like 2:15 so much. Kim has him cornered and the slightest smile shows he is kind of proud of her and the growth she made since she started as a law student at his firm. The acting/cast and attention to detail in this show are Incredible.
It's incredible how subtle the shift in his energy is.
That’s why I like it more than breaking bad. (Both awesome but Better call Saul have more in depth characters
Growth then, and look at them now.
And then it's repaid with the worst kind of treachery.
Yes that's nice and all but those kinds of "elite" reactions are what ticked Kim&Jimmy's reactions the most. Which worked perfectly well for Howard's character. Yes at first Jimmy and Kim were currying favours from the big names but they pulled tricks and cons that can by pass authority yet these big names can act haughty and mighty with them showing approval with a little smirk or eyebrow movement.
The sad thing about Howard is he always wanted be a solo practitioner, like Jimmy. But his father put him in HHM.
When does he say that?
@@conormartin3476 I think it was when Kim left HHM, he and Kim had a little heart to heart.
Them he tried to "steal" Mesa Verde from her by telling his secretary to call them immediately after.
Yet he never chose to leave.
Dude just wanted the prestige but would never be caught dead doing the legwork or dumpster diving. He's got too much pride in his appearance and upbringing to actually make it on his own.
@@JohnSmith-bn5mi I don’t think it’s prestige so much as he was put in a tough spot by his father and possibly chuck to stick with HHM. Just like how Nacho still works with his father. Some children stick with their parents not cause of prestige or money. Some children stick by them cause of love and loyalty/legacy. Kinda like how Nacho’s dad wanted his son to take over his shop when he died. Not saying it was right just that Howard may have been put in the spot when he passed the Bar.
@@macfly6237 You're right.
I guess we'll never know the circumstances.

@@royaltoadclub8322 not a snob? 'Hamlindigo Blue'??
The fact that Howard speaks highly of Jimmy on the first question of the character analyst. God he’s such a good dude. He always saw the best in people but Jimmy just took it too far.
I can't imagine how Cliff feels when he knows Howard's gone.
Hamlin speaks highly of Jimmy because he feels guilty about being too weak to stand up to Chuck.
Kim calls him out on this later on. His motivation for trying to make amends is simply because he wants to feel better. Instead of doing the right thing initially
@@VersaceJesus what right thing? Are you gonna hire your business partner's brother if your business partner himself vehemently opposes it? If you do, how's that the right thing?
@@iwatchwithnoads7480 Right? I know Jimmy's the protagonist so we're seeing the show from his perspective, but it's silly how tunnel-visioned people get with his point of view. It's bad business. It shouldn't even cross your mind to try and fight your partner over it: he's known his brother his whole life, you've known him for a few years. You'd need a fantastic reason to overrule his expertise.
i also think that jimmy projected his issues with chuck who treated him horribly onto howard because after chucks death he never was able to reach any resolution.
What’s interesting though is that Kim seems much more intent on destroying Howard than Jimmy. Jimmy goes along with it and enjoys the thrill but Kim is the one who is making the plans and seems most concerned with the plot going through. Howard was douchey to Kim but I’m still a bit confused as to why she was so set on this plot.
Sad now seeing how genuine Howard's compliments towards Jimmy were
Real compliments, but he never once stood up to Chuck for Jimmy. He let Jimmy's big bro do him dirty. I'd kinda hate the guy too. But Jimmy went overboard, he should have just cut ties with Howard and moved on. But I think Chuck manipulating him before the bar hearing, and that 'chimp with a machine gun' rant cut him to the core, he's hurt and lashed out, Chuck was dead, so Howard became his target.
@@kauske It was Kim's idea. Jimmy wanted to leave him alone.
@@HunterShows They were both in it together. But that's not the point, the point is Howard isn't as innocent as people are painting him. Granted, he definitely doesn't deserve what Jimmy, or more importantly, Lalo ended up doing to him.
Anitov I agree that as good deep down as Howard truly was, he had his flaws and his checkered history with Jimmy and Kim led them to want to wreck his career. They thought the damage could be undone and it certainly wasn't beyond repair…at least not until Lalo put a bullet in his head-something neither of them dreamed would ever happen.
Calling someone “Charlie hustle” is not a genuine compliment lol
Hamlin is the true manifestation of lawful good
lawful neutral
@@stonem0013 Agree to disagree
literally lawful
@@sn4831 he runs a law firm that regularly/primarily represents morally dubious clients - big corporations, banks, etc. He worked Kim to death, and never gave her proper appreciation or promotion, forcing her to leave. A lawful good lawyer would be someone fighting for the little guy and using the law to make the world a better place. Hamlin's main priority is running a successful firm, which he inherited from his father.
@@sn4831 Cab rank principle? You seem misinformed there, friend. There is no such principle for a law firm such as this. That applies to barristers. Hamlin specifically seeks out clients like banks, corporations, finance firms, etc. Jimmy even attacks Chuck at one point for representing such evil (albeit well heeled) clients.
Ofc, Jimmy eventually ends up chaotic/neutral evil, so yes, Howard is still more moral as a lawful neutral.
Some people are so clueless that they still think, after 5 seasons, that Howard is a bad guy. He and Mike are the most decent substantive characters
Howard comes off as fake, especially in congratulating people or offering sympathy, but people take this as an act of evil.

The worst thing about Jimmy (and Kim) treating Howard bad is Howard always looks like he liked Jimmy. Even in this scene, Howard was the one who gave the nickname "Charlie Hustle". At the very least Howard wasn't against Jimmy working as a lawyer (Chuck who denied it), in the board scene Howard always asked Jimmy opinion if he felt he was uncomfortable with a particular decision, and Howard later on invited Jimmy to work at HHM.
Anyway, I hope Jimmy-Kim plot against Howard fails miserably, he deserves better..
Knowing vince, that plot most likely will happen lol
I doubt it will fail. I think it will succeed beyond their expectations, in the worst way.
@@MetalMarauder Makes sense. Since I remember, in lasts seasons Howard was looking like in a downfall perspective in life, seeming desperate, having insomnia and other problems.

"Charlie Hustle" is not an affectionate nickname. It is an insult, a slick way of saying someone has no integrity. I know it sounds like you're saying someone works hard or some such, but that it not what it means.
Pete Rose was nicknamed Charlie Hustle, and since then the name has become synonymous with cheats, liars and gamblers.
I can't know why Howard chose that nickname for Jimmy, but it very easily could have been due to Chuck telling him stories about "Slippin' Jimmy".
1:24
I love that Kim smiles as she asks what Howard’s opinion of Jimmy was. She knew he would answer honestly and positively about Jimmy
Even Jimmy gave a half smile hearing Howard refer to him as a hard worker
This show is probably the best-written show. Kudos to the writers
I wonder if the writers put in HHM from the very beginning just for this scene.
"...he was hired by Davis & Main, I'd be happy to talk more about that, if you like."
Interesting counter by Howard to try to cut into Kim's attempt to paint Jimmy as a hard, upstanding Lawyer lol, even though she didn't pursue that line of thought the jury had to have heard something about how that job went for Slippin Jimmy =P
@Raptormann0205 There was no jury at this hearing.....

And ofc the infamous advertisement controversy, where he aired a commercial using the company's name without properly consulting nor telling anyone about it.
Nah Jimmy absolutely deserved to be fired and if all his shenanigans at Davis&Main had been disclosed in court the judges would not have been so sympathetic.
It wouldn’t have helped Howard’s case tbh. Jimmy didn’t lose any cases or commit a crime he was just wacky which isn’t a crime. If anything it shows why Howard should’ve hired jimmy because they understood his character
he was basically saying "stop painting my firm as the bad guy for not hiring him and move to the next subject."

Howard became one of the best characters in bcs over the seasons
Howard, like Skylar in Breaking Bad, is a character that most people who watch the show hate for practically no reason. It’s amazing how these shows turn the bad guys into the protagonists by showing their POV rather than the good guys’ (and through fantastic writing lol)
I disagree. Howard is one of those characters you learn to like more as you see more of where he's coming from. At first he may seem like the typical "bad guy" in movies or even like some weird jock but I think that quickly changes and they make that easy for the viewer to see because they go out of their way to humanize his character a lot.
Chuck was the "skyler" of the show. The writers were able to keep chuck and skyler's characters unlikable from virtually all angles without making it unrealistic. I think a lot of viewers side with Howard and his character even though they may "root" more for Jimmy in a given scene. I think most viewers just want Howard and Jimmy to get along.

Knowing what we know, Howard has been the most honest.
Howard had principles, a man who would go down with the ship and know when he lost. Thats why he's my favorite character in the show.
MUST REWATCH ENTIRE SHOW. Starting tonight. But I'm also rewatching breaking bad with a companion book. Choices man. I only have time for one binge per night lol. It starts off great and continues to get better with season 5 being one of the best things ever on TV. (kinda like s5 of Breaking Bad)
(I rewatched both, enjoyed every second, again)
So sad he had to turn to drugs. At least he's in a better place now.
Yes, addiction is a disease. He was a good lawyer and a Hell of a guy. What else is there to say?
While everyone was focused on Jimmy vs. Chuck in this episode, there was also the rivalry of Kim vs. Howard that was growing since HHM's treatment on Kim in season 2.
You can see Howard liked Jimmy, the only parts he didn’t like was because of what Chuck was telling him.
The saying goes “if you’re told something enough you start to believe it”. I think Chuck was a big reason Saul was created and Jimmy wasn’t able to flourish as a lawyer he was earlier in the series. (Especially because he didn’t want him to be hired)
I think if Howard had a backbone and stood up to Chuck’s jealousy and bitterness toward Jimmy, he would still be alive today and have the respect of Kim and Jimmy.
But he stood up too late to Chuck, and Chucks damage to Jimmy was already done. Thus Jimmy and Kim lost all respect for Howard. Jimmy had issues before, don’t get me wrong, but maybe having Chuck not call him a liar constantly and believing in him would have helped turn him into a better person
Exactly this, Chuck didn't try to help Jimmy up, or guide him along, he kicked his brother down and was angry he'd dare to try and be more than a mailroom monkey.
"Charles McGill is not the subject of this hearing." *JIMMY PROCEEDS TO MAKE CHARLES MCGILL THE SUBJECT OF THIS HEARING*
My absolute favorite line in this episode is the “Charles McGill is not the subject of this hearing” oh, but he is, he just wasn’t scheduled to be
This is when Howard Hamlin became Howard.... uhm...... just Howard.
Chuck's mistreatment of Jimmy probaly played a part in creating Saul, otherwise he could've become a legit lawyer
Howard is the most underrated character. Patrick Fabian is a class act.
Charlie Hustle is a lot nicer name than Slippin' Jimmy which brings up some of Saul's most demeaning cons he did for money. Though "Charlie' kind of evokes his brother's name, kind of implying he was breaking his back to BECOME his brother, which might not have sit right with Jimmy even if it was true.
Now watching all of these makes me depressed
same he was my fav 💔
I hope Vince and the team have the creative reserves left to continue expanding this universe, it seems like they not only never miss but only keep raising the bar.
I think Howard is a better person than Chuck and Kim.
Sure although he’s boring. Kim gives life a sense of spiciness
The only scenes I hated Kim was when she was shouting at Howard's face, that was so uncalled for. I like how he kept his poise.
Howard and his charisma is very articulate but he was spiteful. Kim was right yelling at his face!
Tells a lot about a shows writing when you have this many people this confused. All the information is there but packed so densely and in such creative places
Your post left me confused, I guess that means it was really good?
This scene was incredible. It was the beginning of us understanding Howard isn’t a bad guy
Something I love about Howard and that I picked up on right away is how he always carries himself upright and proud almost. His shoulders are always high and his back is straight, often he puts his chin up a bit. It's all subtle but it hammers home his characters biggest trait (imo), his pride. When he's drunk or manic he loses control of this proud demeanor and slumps his shoulders and drops his head. Fantastic physical acting from Patrick Fabian.
This is truly the moment Howard becomes Walter White.
rip Howard, he was never the bad guy
RIP Howard :( The wrong place at the wrong time...
?How so troll? Did you watch the same show?
are you dumb?@@ozanareyiz7773
Someone should make a tribute video for him.
that's cringe
RIP HOWARD
We can rebuild him
OkBuddyChicanery moment.
Lmao
doge
3:05 Kim’s frown and “Nope” cracks me up 😂
After watching the new season, I honestly feel bad for Howard. I feel he is like the Hank of BCS(of course, maybe less minerals and less badassery), a straight-laced individual placed in a world where the bad guys win in the end even to their own destruction.
Howard is the typical creation of modern society, a bunch of glass, no emotion
It's funny when you realize that Gus use this apparence to hide his real identity, a perfect gentleman, polite and normal
You can hide and do lots of things by adopting the typical look and behaviour of a corporate poster boy, knew a dude who was indebted as fuck and behaved pretty much like howard he always was jumping from manager and director positions for small and medium bussiness, eventually he ate more than he could chew and got himself into jail for fraud and misleading company executives
I felt bad for howard's death, but then i come back to this scene, and then you remember his history, he's barely ever supported jimmy, took chuck's side in his prejudice for jimmy, and just actively worked against him
Seems like he was in the middle of something 🤔
Isn't it interesting that Howard's 'Charlie Hustle' nickname for Jimmy evokes Chuck's name?
Poor Howard didn’t deserve what happened to him
What howard tie made out of? looks like wool but not sure it tie design I've never seen before
