Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

@@kuro6001sure, but jimmy is here, and he doesn’t want to feel guilty for a man that didn’t care about him (honestly quite understandable)

This is the cruellest thing Jimmy has done. He KNOWS what happened is his fault. He either feels guilty about it or he doesn't care at all and just lets Howard embody all this guilt and pain, and then proceeds to revel in it. It's sickening.
I think this was Jimmy's conflicted nature at it's core. Jimmy seemed actually hesitant and a little shocked when Howard mentioned the insurance thing as being a catalyst; I think this scene embodies Slippin' Jimmy taking over, seeing an easy and unexpected out in terms of handing off the guilt to Howard whether he deserved it or not. This was a way to push the real Jimmy down deep inside and just allowing Howard to be the villain even if at this point he knew that wasn't true.

Chuck saw right through Jimmy's facade all along. He had every reason to never trust Jimmy and always despise him.
It's ironic how this scene is Jimmy being cruel to Howard, letting him believe that he is solely responsible for Chuck's death, but in the long run, Howard goes to therapy, works through his guilt, and is able to move past it, which just makes Jimmy even more jealous, because he was able to process the guilt in a healthy and productive manner, something that Jimmy was never able to do.

Jimmy turning into Saul has always been about suppressing guilt, grief and trauma. This is the first and most key moment of emotional suppressing. You can see early in the episode that he is grieving for Chuck, but the moment he realises he was substantially responsible for the circumstances, his demeanour shifts completely. It would be too much to handle the guilt, so he just chooses not to and suppresses. This isn't the moment that Saul was born, but it's definitely the moment that any kindness or compassion that Jimmy once had (for anyone but Kim) died for good.
This is the moment your mom stopped cooking dinner.

brothers usually are not very compassionate towards each other. in fact there feeling are usually the opposite. the number of falling outs among brothers is a lot more than the number of close bonds.
They were both right about each other. That is their essential tragedy.
Chuck not telling Jimmy about their mother's last words definitely showed that his jealousy was greater than any compassion he may have had.
@@whyohwhy9679 yeah this one shows his really nasty side
@@whyohwhy9679 I thought that last moment was a good illustration why Chuck finds things unfair as well; whereas he was willing to sit there, hungry and grumpy, to make sure there was no chance their mother would die alone, Jimmy took a shortcut and just went for food when he was hungry. So when she actually has her last waking, dying moment, Chuck actually put in the work to be there. So it feels completely unfair that even in her last dying moment, she wanted to talk to jimmy and not him.
Jimmy's whistling reminds me of Walter whistling right after saying he was sad about Drew Sharp's death.
Re-watching this scene, you can see Jim was obviously interested in the bit about HHM's insurance perhaps initially feeling guilty over his role (because he was the one that pointed their insurance coverage in Chuck's direction ie. Jim "accidently" let slip Chuck's testimony at the bar), but when Howard revealed that he was the one that forced Chuck out as a result, Jim used that as his way out (ie. his loophole to get around his role for the whole insurance situation), and this is why he started doing all those pranks to Howard, a way of getting back at him, as Jimmy saw it (his distortion of it anyways).
The next step of denial is projection. That's exactly what Jimmy did here.
Re-watching it too in preparation for Season 6.
This is totally the case.
It would make sense something in Jimmy's mind to immediately pump the breaks from feeling the immediate guilt of knowing that you had a hand in your own brothers death. Like you pointed out - he used Howard's "confession" as a get out of jail card to remove himself from that equation. Self protection. Anything to spare ourselves from the overbearing guilt.

Despite his demeanor, Howard genuinely wanted to help. He never wanted any of this and to see that he thought this is the worst thing he ever experienced is heartbreaking.
Howard really is an interesting character. There’s times like this when I feel bad for him, because here he was really trying to make Jimmy feel better. Then I think about how he was a scumbag to Kim earlier on in the show, and he was kind of spineless and just operating as Chuck’s lapdog to get to Jimmy. But he has shown signs of being a good person down the stretch, I’m worried for what’s gonna happen to him in season 6.
We will never know what would have happened if Kim stayed at HHM, but Howard probably thought he's doing Kim favor with the cold treatment, sort of with a "tough love". Either pushing her out of the company or forcing her to prove herself. Sure, she acquired Mesa Verde, but redemption doesn't happen in a matter of days, not after a major fuck up. I'd be willing to bet she'd eventually be given her old job back if she showed humility and way more patience.
It's also what makes him an interesting character. It's realistic that He's conflicted in so many situations

Jimmy never intended to kill chuck, he’s obviously not actually happy in this scene. He is pretending to be ok because he can’t accept the fact that he indirectly killed his brother and that is tormenting him.

This scene is interesting to contrast with the next time Howard goes to their apartment.
I do feel sorry for Howard and he 100% made the right decision in trying to force Chuck out, which he should've done far sooner. But I just totally get Jimmy. You're so utterly disgusted, so utterly DONE with a family member, it's basically impossible to feel anything about them anymore. It just takes too much out of you.
The real reason of the actions of jimmy was that in reality, it was not Howard’s fault. It was jimmy. He literally told insurance company what happened that day. And let them know about chucks mental health. He did it on purpose, willingly.
When he hears that was the sole reason Howard kicking his brother out, he knew he caused his brothers end. He was the real reason. But he passed the ball to Howard and changed the topic in his head to not think about it.

@@yosoyspider9420 chuck always knew jimmy was slipping jimmy and couldnt change
@@AltShiftSpam Jimmy was changing though, I hate the whole "Chuck was right at the start" take cause he wasn't. Jimmy in season one was trying his hardest to simply be someone to be proud of. He was changing, had Jimmy been given the opportunity to actually rise in the system then Saul wouldn't have happened. Chuck wasn't right because he knew Jimmy, Chuck was "right" because he created Saul into a self fulfilling prophecy. He's jealous of Jimmy and believes that he's better then Jimmy, that Jimmy doesn't deserve what he has and the love he gets because he can talk good compared to him who is suffering even though he is a genius and practically a god amongst lawyers. Chucks jealousy and superiority complex is what causes him to want Jimmy to not be a lawyer which only forces Jimmy to be backed into a corner where he has to become Slipping Jimmy. Saul Goodman wasn't a ticking time bomb always meant to happen. Jimmy proves people can change, he took those negative qualities that made him slipping jimmy and used them to actually do good look at the sandy piper case. That case only became possible because of Jimmy's confidence. He was changing, he was trying to become a lawyer his brother could be proud of. Chuck wasn't right so he made it right by ruining his brother and the people around him. Thank you for listening to my Ted talk.
Okay so I typed this before watching season 6 as it wasn't on Netflix yet. I admit I'm actually kinda wrong here. Chuck didn't refuse jimmy the right to change. It was a fault on both side as seen in the time machine. Chuck was jealous of jimmy yes but he was willing to throw it away with a genuine heart to heart of which Jimmy always choose to avoid as "HE" believed he wasn't worthy of change. This led chuck to keep his jealousy and in turn become the chuck we see in the show. Ultimately jimmy was willing to change but his shame and unwillingness to admit he wanted to change to chuck is what ultimately led to the self filling prophecy. Thanks for listening to my news Ted talk.
Poor howard thinks he is the reason chuck died. Chucks illness is because of Jimmy. Whenever he gets near chuck, chuck gets sick. Chuck was getting better till jimmy showed up in his house and made chuck remember the anger, the jealousy he feels for Jimmy. I think he just developed this illness to stop thinking about jimmy. And (died) when he realised the cause of his illness. He can’t handle jimmy being better than him while doing what Chuck hates. Thats why the we saw their mom saying “jimmy” as last word and chuck not speaking about it. Thats my thought. Plus the movie even showed us, when jimmy worked hard in legal way (shredded papers)
Chuck stopped being sick and walked out of the house without even noticing.
The characters in this show are so real. Wow.
3:14 reminds me of Walt's whistling after Todd killed that kid. And Kim realizing, just like Jesse, that he's sociopathic
People throw the term sociopathic around so much. Witnessing a boy shot in the head with ambivalence and not showing sympathy to a rival aren't even in the same league. Jimmy dispises chuck, and isn't going to comfort him when he's hurting for something he didnt even do. A dick move, but not sociopathic.
He's not sociopathic, he's petty and is trying to overplay the whole "I don't care lol" aspect in an attempt to hurt Howard. Kim literally says "I supported you while you played mind games with my boss" later, she understands immediately that he's basically trying to emotionally abuse Howard out of pettiness.
This is the Breaking Saul moment. Where Jimmy went Breaking Bad on everything.
This is the exact moment where Jimmy becomes Saul Goodman
The fact that Jimmy indirectly caused his brother's suicide.
"Well i guess thats your cross to bear"
Damn jimmy ! Thats cold !
This is the moment when HHM became H.
Poor Howard
Jimmy is headstrong 💪
Jimmy feeding the fish reminded me of Tony Soprano feeding the ducks in his pool. Something about how "criminals" have big hearts towards animals, when their affection towards humans is lacking. It fits here so im sure its the same kinda deal. They are the same kind of Anti-Hero
Kim's subtle reactions like 2:34 she did throughout the series. Great acting.
Wouldn’t be Howard’s worst experience in Jimmy and Kim’s apartment
It's so incredible that Jimmy's actor could display anguish through happiness.
That's AAA
That whistle is the truth Howard, you are not a Heisenberg
The whistle remembered me of Heisenberg, after the killing of the kid.
2:50 that little smile..
I like how in BCS Saul seems like a badass, cold, manipulative, daring. In BB he is such a pushover.
He's only badass when it comes to people who work within the confines of the law: he realizes he has so much more power than everyone else because of his willingness to use illegal or highly unethical tactics within the courtroom. However, any time he's confronted by an actual criminal, he's a pushover.
The court is Sauls sandbox, he can stroll around the courts under the protection of the law like he’s a god. Dealing with Heisenburg, everyone eventually bent, and if they didn’t well you know what happens to things that don’t bend.
@@MetrotomX5 yeah? Because that’s the smart thing to do.
It’s stupid to fight someone as crazy and ruthless as Walt or Gus. Especially when they make you a lot of money.
Through all the theories and speculation it really just comes down to Jimmy being extremely confused on what he should feel about Chuck. Everyone assumes he cares about his death but how can you assume that after Chuck said “I never really cared about you”. Chuck was a legitimately horrible person
Chuck saved Jimmy from prison. He gave him a job. Chuck is in the right. Hes slipping jimmy
@@exandious867 Honestly both are bad people, Chuck might be a slightly better person tho.
Who's here after s6 e7 finale
I still can't believe it...
@@piratealeks6865 Lalo killed Howard 😱😱
Howie was too pure for this world! 😭
watching this after Season 6. Howard didn't deserve his fate.
It hurts even more when you understand that Jimmy is the reason of the HHM's problems with the insurance company.
"I think Chuck killed himself because he didn't have enough tickets."
The reason Jimmy reacts in such a strange way is that he personally feels guilty for causing the insurance situation which ultimately led to Chuck's death. He's acknowledging that it's his *own* cross to bear, as well. He can't go into details on the difficult subject matter so he changed the subject to being light-hearted and making coffee as a diversion.
The fact that Jimmy still blamed Howard for Chucks death is really truly souless.
Watching the show again from Howards perspective is heartbreaking, truly a selfless character
dammit, I just *know* I'm gonna end up binge-watching all the seasons again before the finale.
Howard is a tragic character in this show, especially after ep. 7 of season 6. Jimmy and Kim are indirect cause of 2 major moments with their scheming. Ruined 2 lives.
Honestly, they wanted to hurt Howard. If they hadn't, he wouldn't have confronted them at the wrong place and the wrong time. They didn't want to kill him though but they were still mostly responsible. Drug dealers always kill witnesses too so there was no way Howard's death at Lalo's hands could have been avoided.
It could have been avoided if Jimmy and Kim didn't decide to harass an innocent man
This show just does an excellent job at making you feel for the characters, especially now Howard.... dude was genuinely hurt in this and Jimmy was more happy that he was hurt then he was upset over his own brothers death
Howard was a good guy hanging out with bad people.
[spoiler] And now that howard's dead, it's jimmy's cross to bear
it was Jimmy's doing all along. he sabotaged Chuck with his insurance company and forced Howard's hand
This is when his coke habit started
RIP Howard Hamlin.
Howard is in for a rough ride in season 6 unfortunately.
You don't say
In some aspects I'm enjoying this show more than breaking bad. It's more slow paced but the acting and the story line are amazing
well to those who don't know, Jimmy is the one who made sure the insurance company knows about Chuck's condition.
Good for him
Rewatching the series, Howard was definitely the good guy. He's certainly easy to project issues onto. Jimmy even lets him take the fall for Chucks death.
