In this video I bought my first abandoned storage unit. This was a pretty interesting experience that I don't think I'll ever do again. I did find some good flips in the unit but had a lot of mixed feelings along the way. Hope you guys enjoy the video. Let me know in the comments if you have tried this and what you have found!

Just to be clear these days probably half of the storage auctions you see are people willingly giving the facility or even ASKING the facility to auction the unit so they can make some money and not have to deal with the stuff they have put in there anymore.
You should make your overlay ever so slightly transparent so we can see what's behind you.
I have never said you should buy an abandoned storage unit. I would advise anyone against it, but LOVE that you did it!
It's been a top comment on a lot of my vids haha. I get the appeal. Big mystery box essentially. Can see how people would really like it, but not for me.
@@StevieSellsStorage units and massive estate sales can be overwhelming. Normally I just sort out what I want and what I want to toss right on site. It makes it less overwhelming. Another way to make some extra on items that don't sell or wouldn't is to recycle them at your local scrap recycler. Sometimes I'll but lots or units just because I know I can get back more than what I spend on the initial bid+fees.

screw turbo tax. their lobbying is one of the reasons why the US tax system is so horrible. in EU countries you log into a website, choose a year, and click request payment. 1-2 months later you get your money. doing your taxes literally could take a minute in the US.
A lot of people have undeclared income which is why it takes longer for those people, for regular people with an employer who pays your taxes it takes about 10 minutes to answer the questions of if you have anything to declare(like 401k cashing or side business) then you just put your bank info in and they transfer it in 1-2 months

Use to watch storage wars all the time but never really comprehended or thought about the fact that abandoned units are peoples actual belongings that they couldn’t afford to get back for what ever reason, appreciate u talking about that.

Stevie, love the content! I have been doing storage units on my channel for the last few months for my $1 to Datsun series! Here are some of my take aways.
-Buy small units 5x5 are good options
-Buy messy cheap units (investing 20-100 makes it a lot more fun because you usually get into profit alot quicker)
-Sort into 3 groups. Keep, donate, trash
-figure out what sells best where. Furniture are fast movers on marketplace. $100 plus goes to eBay, then the rest I sell on whatnot for $1 starts. Lots of fun and a great way to move all items quickly! I started at $1 and I'm currently at $3,271.59 puls 3k in watches and another grand in merch that I have in a few boxes. Definitely takes some getting used to like anything but I think it's great that you tried it and brought some more exposure to this side hustle. 🤙

One thing to know about Storage Wars is that the production includes seeding each unit with something interesting/unique and/or valuable.

I had a friend who worked for a storage unit company a few years ago. These auctions are nearly always a scam, the venue or someone that works there, will nearly always go through the lots, before they put them up for auction, and take anything of real value,that can be flipped easily.
That's got to be illegal, was it a nationally recognized storage unit company?

It is illegal, if they get caught doing it, it’s a felony
So it may only be illegal if the contract with the original owner stipulates that all the items will be sold at auction as a bundle. If the contract states that the items will be removed and sold to recuperate the costs, then it’s not illegal. But in either instance a crime isn’t committed against the person buying the storage unit only a breach of contract or theft from the original owner if they remove items before the transfer of ownership takes place between the previous owner and the new owner.
If they claim it was unsearched ( which they all do) it would at the very least be considered fraud. plus there are very strict rules regarding them considering they are lien sales

I’ve only ever bought 2 units. One I paid $10 plus the fees, the other $80. They were both small and didn’t have furniture. The $10 one was mostly filled with trash bags in the pictures and decided to test how it would work. It was tons of carded toys, most weren’t crazy money but I made nearly a grand after all was said and done net. Second one I was able to comp some sneakers that were slightly visible in the photos and a lot of it wasn’t sellable. Did get a cart that I still use to hold inventory though!
I'm glad you looked up the prices rather than storage hunters who just guess the value and they tally it up.
Going through someone's life like that can't be easy. In this case they were the belongings of a family with children, and more than likely they were there because of some tragedy or other.

the rc car is an traxxas rustler xl1, the xl1 is the first prodution so it ranges from 1994- early 2000s so you can search up vintage traxxas rustler. they dont work 90% of the time doe becuase they are so old but you could prolly still get anything from like 30-60. hope that helps
Q. I assume you can identify the owners. Have you tried to contact them to get them their important papers (if there were any)?
Q2. Did you have to pay to dispose of the unwanted items?
If you're able to throw a garage sale, that may be a quicker, easier way to get rid of all the items not suitable for Ebay.

you have to be so careful...cause several have said what is on the sites pictures were missing when they went to get their stuff one hour later...he too the site to court over it! Also most of the units are people who are in nursing homes or died and family could care less. Or will go thru before the auction. Also ....lots of hoarders out there or people who just hide stuff from others and got over their head. Sad...but someone has to get it so the company can rent out again.
We got a storage unit auction house near my house and ill pop by the site every so often. Pretty inexpensive up until the last 5 minutes then it gets out of my budget lol
How you know that your medical system is broken is that people sell the secondhand moonboots. They're so rank after your done with them you need to replace the foam at a minimum. Our hospitals in Australia charge us $40 for them new.

I bought a unit and it was filled with a bunch of AA and NA stuff along with journals from someone's struggle with drugs and recovery. It was incredibly sad going through all their stuff thinking of this persons circumstance

In 2010 my mom fell on hard times I was still in high school we put all our stuff in storage my skateboards snowboards all my gear all my vintage Pokemon cards and many many other cool stuff. Well one day I found out she didn’t pay and someone bought it. We lost everything… I even had original Nike Sbs brand new in box. My step mom was in charge of Nike SB back in the day (og blazers) and I was devastated. I lived 4 hours away and there was nothing I could do at 16-17…
I have never seen where the tenants can get their stuff much less for free....i thought the online auctions are suppose to show the actually items in there? SO you will know if anyone lives there.
If you have a truck with a bed and you can find solid units than its 1000% worth it. Dont buy units unless something peaks your interests.
Tbh. I’ve seen people find Pokemon & yugioh cards, sealed vintage toys, retro video games and signed memorabilia that could possibly worth a lot of money. So it can sometimes be a gamble but sometimes that gamble pays off
Look through the coins if there is a 1942 quarter it can be worth a lot of money

One more thought: I’ve always assumed that if there was gold in a garage, most people would pay the rent. Therefore, your bid should be less than the back rent most of the time.

Helped my friend clear out a storage unit, it was a granny’s unit. Was able to find some gold jewelry underneath some of the drawers :)

Storage wars its an entertainment nothing like real life, theres still some in person auctions but most of them are online you definitely overpayed on this one also be aware in any kind of online auction theres gonna be shill bidding regardless of rules lol, you missed on reading the whole thing theres different rules for each storage location, but did kinda good try to avoid furniture if you can, and definitely need to organize into 3 categories(1. Resale or keep, 2 donate items and 3 trash but did good and definitely storages are not for everybody but try to have a limit on bidding regardless if its storage or not
Also bid on what you can see, writings on boxes/totes can be misleading and can be empty

Eh, you live, and ya learn man! It would be very difficult doing this solo with no moving experience, especially when you have to dispose/donate the leftovers. I'd feel bad about selling peoples items too and also risk running into drugs. Tools are always a great find and it's awesome you are donating the proceeds. You should definitely learn poker and give it a try for profit!!
