The Zvezda kit definetly looks better overall but AMK has it when it comes to the rotor head and weapons. The Zvezda kit has a lot move rivet detail and seems to be more refined.
Yeah you have certainly got the points on contention between these two kits. If the surface detail had been better I would have said that this kit is nearly as perfect as it could have been, but it wasn’t. But again that doesn’t make this kit unbuildable, just improvable. A standard is only each persons interpretation of that kit. Some might find it perfect for them as others might find in not as perfect. But the texture of the outside got me. Anyway, sorry for the late reply.
Zvezda is bad by zvezda standards, seamlines everywhere, poor fitting clear parts. Trumpeter looks dull with recessed rivets, AMK kit is badly molded. So IMHO there is no mi 17 / 8 worth building. EDIT: having seen a decent build of the Trumpeter, I do think that one is worth it.

Even if this is the best MI-17 on the Market, it looks not like a good kit for today's standards - but thank you for the review!
