That burner tube comes out they are usually held in by 2 screws.
the one you took out that was in front and one near the back of the burner.
then just lift it up and out, first disconnect the wires from underneath.
makes it a lot easier changing the igniter.
easier to get at the screws.
plus you don't have to twist the wires together that's probably why it didn't reach the safety valve.

Jonny...Couple helping comments for Whirlpool. Hardest part was running igniter cable through insulation to connection on the back of the range. There's a small plate that covers the gas orifice inside the oven. Remove the one screw and plate. Don't remove defective cable and igniter at first so you can use it to help run new cable through.
ALSO, shine your flashlight where cable enters insulation inside the oven. Then you can clearly see where the cable goes as you look from the back of the range! So simple but a massive help in fishing new igniter cable through insulation to connection on the back of the range. People online complain about how confusing it can be getting the new cable to the connection.

VERY THOROUGH and easy to follow tutorial...I'm 99.9% certain that I've got a bad igniter, and that's what's causing the oven to NOT fire up! TomorrowI turn 71 years old and I've ALWAYS loved taking broken things apart and fixing them... so tomorrow, I'll ride down to where my Dad RIP, bought the Frigidaire oven back in 2013, and with OLD igniter in hand, buy a NEW one, install it and if the stars are in alignment, I might ACTUALLY hear a, "GOOD JOB GARY!" from my dear wife! Thank you for this informative video. I have about two yeas of tinkering with washers and dryers, but I haven't worked on ranges at all. I'm preparing to do a similar job, so I wanted to get eyes on the disassembly and part replacement. I really appreciate your attention to detail. If I may, I'd like to point out that the igniter fails not because it doesn't get hot enough, but because it goes out of spec. As the igniter heats up, its resistance drops, thus it's amperage increases. In order to heat the bimetal in the gas valve it needs to reach a certain current (3.3 amps in valves that I have seen) in order to flex the gas valve bimetal which opens the gas valve. Just a little tidbit I thought I would pass on. So, you can see an igniter glowing and not lighting because its resistance hasn't decreased enough for the current to reach the specified amperage. That being said, I want to thank you for showing me how to execute this operation!

So I’ve been noticing a little gas smell lately after turning my oven on so it appears I see the glow under the bottom panel but the element doesn’t light or takes several minutes to light to the point where I start to smell gas. Any ideas what wrong.

    • @JonnyDIY

I would start with the igniter. It's possible it's failing and opening the gas, but not lighting it as fast as it should be.

Great video. I see that that ignitor lights the flames next to it and then the rest of the flames are lit in a domino effect.
We have an issue where we started to smell gas *only* when the oven was on ( we stopped using oven after noticing this ). I’m wondering if it is possible for some of those gas outlets on the bottom of the oven to be clogged so badly that most of the flames light, but a clogs keep some flames from lighting which means that nothing lights the gas outlets next to it, so gas is released without burning. In other words, if the are 10 holes next to each other with gas coming out of them, and the gas is ignited at holes 1-7, but 8 and 9 are clogged, then gas will be coming out hole 10 without igniting.
    Thanks

Sounds possible, I would open it up and light the oven and see whats going on with the flame tube when oven on. An inexpensive gas leak detector like this, may help a lot in diagnosing as well 👍

Hi Johnny. I realize it's Easter weekend and you're likely busy doing easter-like things but...., but I guess I should give you a heads up on a few things...,A: I am a 62 year old grammy who has "0" knowledge or experience repairing anything electrical but B: I truly can't afford to hire an appliance guy to come out so it's all on me. Now having just watched your (absolutely fantastic!) video on replacing an oven ignitor I'm thinking "hey, I can do that" and so here I go but..., I have a few questions and may have more as this repair moves forward. Ok so I'm working on a Kenmore gas range, model #790.7851 on which the oven may or may not heat. Meaning over the last 6 months it has heated up a few times but the last attempt I'd turned it on but after waiting about an hour for it to heat I just turned it off. The time before that it had heated but took about half an hour to heat and then if I changed the temperature (up or down) it would go down to it's lowest heat and would not budge from that temperature. I'm merely guessing that it's the ignitor AND like I said, after watching your vid I think I can do this. 👉🏽👉🏽🤷🏽‍♀Can I get the ignitor at Home Depot? (Ignitor, oven burner part #316428500, taken from the parts repair list for this oven)..., and "Shoot!" I've forgotten what my other "?" were. Lucky you, guess you're off the hook for now😉😉 BTW I swear I'm not some crazy just hoping to mess with you, I am who I say I am (for better or worse). If for whatever reason you can't help (any further than your great video) that's totally copasetic. I'll figure it out, may take awhile longer but eventually I'll get there. Sorry for the REaLLy lOnG comment, it's a grandmother thing having far too many words✌🏽👋🏽

Sounds like the igniter going out. I'd just replace it, yes. I usually order online from anywhere who has them, amazon, ebay, or appliance parts supplier. You may even be able to get one locally if have one of those appliance repair shops. Yes you can use owner's manual to identify replacement but I'd probably look at one in there to make sure matches before ordering. Have a nice Easter weekend 👍
