After a destructive tornado occurs, the NWS surveys the damage to estimate the tornado's wind speeds. The tornadoes are then rated by
their intensity using the EF scale or Enhanced Fujita scale from the weakest EF0's to the rare incredibly powerful EF5's. In this video we'll observe examples of each as well as the damage each rated tornado can cause.
EF-O TORNADO:
Not all tornadoes have the strength to cause severe destruction, in fact about 75% of tornadoes in the USA are relatively weak falling in the EF0 to EF1 range. A tornado rated EF0 has wind speeds estimated between 65 to 85 mph. They can cause light roof damage including damage to gutters or siding, break branches off trees and push over shallow rooted trees.
EF-1 TORNADO:
EF1 rated tornadoes are stronger with estimated wind speeds from 86 - 110 mph. They cause moderate damage such as roofs severely
stripped, exterior doors ripped off and broken windows. Cars are moved and Mobile homes are badly damaged or overturned.
EF-2 TORNADO:
EF2's cause considerable damage with estimated wind speeds between 111 and 135 mph. Roofs are torn off well-constructed houses, mobile homes are completely destroyed, large trees snapped and cars are lifted off the ground.
EF-3 TORNADO:
EF3's have estimated wind speeds from 136 to 165 mph. They cause severe damage to well constructed houses and large buildings. Trains are overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars are tossed and structures with weak foundations are blown away some distance.
EF-4 TORNADO:
Tornadoes with wind speeds estimated from 166 to 200 mph cause devastating damage and are rated EF4s. Well constructed houses are completely leveled. Structures with weak foundations are blown away. Cars are thrown.
EF-5 TORNADO:
EF5's have estimated wind speeds over 200 mph. The damage from these monsters is incredible! Often at the impact site, there's nothing to see because nothing is left. Strong framed houses are lifted off foundations and carried considerable distances to disintegrate.
Automobile sized missiles fly through the air farther than 100 meters.
Even steel reinforced concrete structures are badly damaged. Наука
I like how this system goes from zero to a hundred real quick...
EF0: Light scrapes, messy hairdos
EF1: *Cars moved, mobile homes destroyed*
force experienced by wind is a square function, because at higher wind speeds not only does more air hit you in terms of the volume of it, but its collision also carries more energy per particle since its traveling faster. its the same reason why driving at like 50mph uses half as much fuel as driving at like 80mph (made those numbers up, your mileage will vary - literally lmao), because air resistance doesnt increase linearly with its relative velocity.
ignoring reduced wind force from reduced air pressure, an EF5 has more than three times the wind force on objects than an EF2 despite not even being twice as fast in terms of wind speed.
:ef 5: imstant death to an entire town
A hundred is saturns and jupiters
no one knows -w-
EF5 everything is gone
*This is one of those videos that needs to be shown to every single class that ever studies tornadoes. Extremely well done, Hank.*
Right on Dan.

This is one of the best EF scale videos I have ever seen. You did great here!
Dan Smoke See-I don't get it,of an EF 6 drops down and runs for 50 miles and touches nothing...it's an "EF 0" ?
Yes. The EF scale is a damage scale, not an intensity scale.
I had an EF-0 touchdown on top of our barn while I was walking up the driveway one day after school. It put a big hole in the roof, knocked down some limbs, and twisted the corn. The tornado itself was rain wrapped and was nearly invisible.

I find it odd from a scientific perspective, that EF-5s are really only considered EF-0s if they don't cause much damage. Seems like it's classification should stand regardless of the damage it does
That's the f scale which was outdated.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't like the way tornadoes are "rated". Damage only data is what categorizes a tornado and I think size and wind speed should also be considered when rating a tornado. It is the reason that the 2013 El Reno Tornado with estimated wind speeds over 295 mph and a size of 2.6 miles wide was only rated EF-3 while the 2013 Moore Tornado with estimated wind speeds of 210 mph and a size of 1.3 miles wide was rated an EF-5. Both tornadoes are very strong and very deadly, but because the Moore tornado went through populated areas and killed 24 people and the El Reno tornado only went over rural areas killing 8 people, the Moore tornado was rated higher than the El Reno tornado, even though scientific measurements prove that the El Reno tornado was bigger and stronger than the Moore tornado.
Manly Chapa I forget the name of the scale but you should look up the t scale if you don't already know about it which you seem like you already do. It rages tornadoes from T0 - T11 if I recall correctly and has a rating below 0 for funnels the don't touch group.
Erikogel1 I've heard of it. But since no one ever uses it I haven't studied it much. But thank you for reminding me of it. I will better research it.
Erikogel1 btw it is the TORRO scale that you are talking about.
Yea I shoud add too that I agree 100% with Manly Chapa.
Erikogel1 yea the TORRO is mostly the European scale. But as you said perhaps a new scale will be implemented. I present.....the DEF scale.....Jk. but all I am saying is that the next scale measures intensity based on damage , wind speed, AND size.

EF0 tornadoes are very fun to mess with if you don't mind debris flying near your car window..
Why is that so true?...
Well you shouldn’t still mess around with an EF0 Tornado I mean sure it’s weak but it doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous trust me even EF0 tornadoes can be dangerous and they can also toss debris at you so it’s better to be safe and have fun.

a most deficient system. they should be rated on their actual intensity
They should be, but until recently there were very few ground-level measurements of the winds directly. They built the system based off the information they had available (what was left after it went through), and haven't had time to catch up. Rebuilding the ratings system from scratch is not an easy feat - you can't just do it. You have to consult with engineers, physicists, meteorologists, insurance companies, public officials and emergency managers, and a whole heap of other people.
The problem with rating them on their actual intensity is that unless there's a doppler really close by, we won't know the actual intensity at the surface and so only a tiny fraction would actually receive a rating.
Pecos Hank
I agree, that would be a huge problem with using just radar for EF ratings. I just think they should be able to use doppler wind velocity measurements when they have them.
Lessinath thing is... what's to say the doppler won't be completely destroyed in the end rendering it unusable and the stronger ones damaging it to the point beyond repair
Dust devils look more fun I think I’ve seen people walk though them
An EF0 threw large branches at me and my family before blowing large plywood sheets from their tables all the way to the street. It was brief and never reported by I know damn well it was an EF0 from the wind speed, circling debris, and color of the wind. That same storm caused 3 other confirmed tornados. I was out on the road driving FAR away from my old house, and I realized there was a tornado warning from what the radio said in my car. Back then, I didn’t know a lot about tornadoes at all, but now I know a LOT more than back then. And when it happened, my heart started to beat extremely fast in fear. It was in tornado season. Im from Arizona, but I saw Greensburg both before and after the tornado. The first time we went, there was this old church that had been converted to an antique shop. Solid brick on concrete foundation. We shopped around a little and went on our way to my dad's hometown. Next time we came to Kansas was after the tornado, we went looking for that building since it was solid brick. After driving past shrapnel filled trees and leveled homes, we finally found a concrete slap with a couple bricks left on it. That was all that was left of that solid building, along with the basement if I remember right.
I heard that an Oklahoma tornado, in Moore I think, in 1999, the tornado's wind speed was only 1 mile an hour away form being an 'EF 6'.
It was an EF6. 318mph wind speeds. Fastest wind ever recorded on earth. I was 1 mile away from the May 3rd 1999 tornado...
The el Reno one in 2013 was the largest tornado ever, but not the highest wind speeds
Keaton Callicoat officially no, unofficially, May 3rd 1999 is accepted as an ef6
The EF scale is a damage scale, not a wind scale. So the extent of the damage determines the rating of the tornado. Having this in mind, there were quite a few tornados with more intense damage than Bridge Creek-Moore tornado and one that produce "scale-breaking" damage: Jarrell tornado. So, if they ever add EF6 to this scale, Jarrell tornado should be listed as one.
The only Tornado conceived of being an EF6 was the Jarrell 1997 Tornado. It was so violent and slow moving that it literally pulverized everything...a guy had a car collection of 50 and they weren't able to find anything bigger than a camshaft.
Mississippi_Man1 all of y’all dumb there isn’t any such thing as an ef6 nor are there any tornadoes officially or unofficially classified as an ef6
I just love how people are driving during a tornado. They're like 'hey tornado, I gotta go to work tho.'
This is exactly what i was curious about and cant think of anyone better to explain it!
1:28 Thank you so much for making this clear! I didn't know this, and I feel like it's important for people to know so that they are less likely to underestimate a tornado.
I've recently been marathoning tornado documentaries and I'd never gotten this explained, and I was always surprised to sometimes see a huge wedge turn out to be an EF3 rather than a 4 or 5. I would think something like "it was huge and hit a town, how did it not do more damage?" I started suspecting that wind speed and size weren't as correlated as I thought, but I didn't have confirmation of that until now, and now I know the variation of shapes within the same rating is wider than I ever thought possible.
Thanks Hank for clearing this up.
Right on Ben.

Btw I love your videos I love tornados and storms
Current science suggests that the winds actually become organized from the ground up in most cases. This means a funnel cloud that doesn't reach the ground is evidence that well-organized tornado winds have already formed.
This is frequently observed with spouts - possibly because it's easy to find spouts in clear air and observe the early stages. They start with a swirls of wind, visible as a dark spot on water or a whirl of leaves. This then turns into a ring of mist or dust, that might develop a funnel or tube of condensed fog.
It has been more challenging to gather evidence for tornadoes below mesocyclones, but they seem to do the same thing.
Thanks! Very informative! I have been enjoying watching your vids. Have a safe and happy new year! ❤

thanks for explaining the rating system, i never knew any of that ! Cool footage !
your videos are awsome keep it up, u have made your facination of tornadoes to me so hooked on these videos
Awesome work as always, Hank. :)
Thanks Hap!
So ef5 is rare......
Great
So you saying that a ef5 can lift up the ground holy cow
They sure can. Ground scouring is not an unusual thing to see in the wake of an EF5. The strongest ones will tear up road pavement too.
hey please help me, I am a Brazilian child and I am experiencing strong storms in my region every day, if there is a tornado what should I do people? ...

1. Go to the basement or somewhere with an underground or deep
2.hold onto something that you KNOW that can stay in balance
3. Do not stand up if its wind, it will push you even more, stay on the ground and protect ur head and neck at all costs, make sure nothing hits it
4. Don't go near cars, trees, glass any sharp or heavy objects expect walls,
5. Don't separate from ur family
6.if a tornado isn't moving, its probably heading towards u, or away from u
7.Go to the basement again, OR bathroom, but try to stay away from glass, since its ur house tho, it won't do much effect inside unless its big
8. Don't go near electricity,
9. Bring food if u have enough time
10. Wear something hot, it doesn't matter if ur sweating, u may freeze to death if not
11. Drink something hot and listen to relaxing music and happy memories when its done,
12. Be determined while its happening for ur family
13. If its a devil dust close your eyes, they only affect them, but I'm pretty sure ur gonna only get a devil dust, they don't harm u, it feels like air, just normal but let them away from ur eyes
14.DONT and PLEASEEEE DONT hold on to a tree, if its still big and look like its gonna hold on, u may slip, especially if its a big tornado
15.dont panic or u can't think
16. Just go the opposite way the tornado is
17. Be ready, packed when it looks like a tornados coming
Here's all, sorry if they aren't useful be safe, u don't have to use all of them but just remember
@@paodequeijo4569: Usually, modern weather systems will be able to detect strong storms in advance, but always be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Look for unusually dark clouds, and a rotating motion. If the sky turns green, then that is the dead warning signal for you to get into a strong shelter, basement or some other sturdy room in your house immediately. If you live in a multistory apartment or home without a basement, quickly go to the lowest floor with no windows and crouch against the wall with your hands above your head. This will prevent potentially dangerous debris from hitting your face if the tornado hits your house. If you don’t have any sort of shelter or closed room, get into a bathroom and crouch in the bathtub or wait inside a reinforced closet with the doors securely closed. There have been tornadoes that have destroyed everything but the sturdy bathroom or closet in homes. If you are in a car, run to a nearby ditch and crouch the same way as I mentioned above. If you happen to be driving on an empty road never try to outrun the tornado, as they can move at up to 60 mph. Lastly, if you are caught out in the open, do not take shelter under trees, and always be ready for the moment where you might need to quickly run into a safe building or shelter. Also, do not stop to look at the tornado even if you are farther away; tornadoes are known to make sudden and unexpected turns.
Thank you all, nothing happened here at least, but at the moment I write I have a serious covid 19.
This video was extremely informative... I had no idea how there were these errors rating tornados!
At 3:41 the grass looks like the ocean 😂
