Do open shelves above the microwave like the ones next to your sink. It would keep the kitchen feeling open and bright rather than closed in with cubboards :)

I would make that back room a snug when you finish renting, or as in America they call a family room. Think the kitchen's just fine and the dining room is perfect. Only thing I would change downstairs is opening the wall between the living room and dining room.

The layout is exactly the same as the house we’re buying except we’re using the dining room as a kids’ playroom, then where your kitchen and the flat are we just have a small bedroom with a small balcony. Where your washing machine is we have stairs going down to the basement level where we have a games room, breakfast room and the kitchen with access to the garden. I love your style and will be updating bits as soon as we move into ours.

I've been checking in regularly. In the kitchen, to the left of the stove...cabinet or shelves? Either, but putting the microwave on the shelf or on a shelf below the cabinet. It gets it up and off the counter, making that a great drinks or tea/coffee prep space.

    • @LauraMelhuishSprague

I just binged this whole renovation over the last few days, I’ve become obsessed with watching renovations and love watching people do so much themselves it’s awesome! I know you said you were waiting a while before you get the final kitchen in but through all my watching I’ve seen recommended DIY Kitchens - it’s all online so you measure your space and order all the parts yourself but it comes out much cheaper since it’s directly from the manufacturer in Yorkshire, something to consider for the future perhaps!

Fantastic job, Laura. Thank you for sharing your progress. My suggestion for the microwave area is to install a shelf above the counter for the microwave (installing another outlet up above the shelf to plug it in) and put cabinets above that. It would make an attractive corner and extremely practical. You could make it a coffee/tea corner by placing a coffee machine/tea kettle on the counter, a basket tray for the coffee/tea fixings, and cup hooks screwed underneath the microwave shelf for mugs. Just a thought.

Love the progress and your style of decor! An idea for that kitchen space where the microwave sits right now: Maybe you could install some of those 3-tier wire hanging baskets that hang from the ceiling for fruit and veggies, I think it would look lovely to have something that's not too bulky in this area.

Was there anyway that you could change the way the doors swing open? I’m not sure if it’s a Euro thing, but It makes more sense that the door swing open towards the wall, not into the room. Swap the hinges to the opposite side. That way it doesn’t swing into the couch or the dinning table. Everything else looks wonderful! Keep up the beautiful work!

Y’all have done a wonderful job! Your home looks so beautiful. I do wonder why doors in English homes open backwards or opposite to how doors open in the states. When a door opens into a room here, the door opens toward or rests on the wall opposite of how your English doors do. I wonder if there is a historical reason for that?
Will be looking forward to seeing what you do to the little courtyard garden area off your dining room.

Hello Laura I absolutely love your style! It looks amazing and my favourite is the dining room! Beautiful colour and the pink chair looks great against the wall! You can see how much work you have put in and I hope you both get to enjoy your home properly now! 😀 Can’t wait to see what you do upstairs! Thanks for sharing your videos I really enjoy watching them! 😀

You must be so proud of both your efforts! It looks like it’s been extremely hard work but I for one have hugely enjoyed watching the progress. It’s so refreshing on the approach you have both taken! Well done you! ❤️👍

Correct me if I’m wrong but you said the access to the garden from the dining room Is the only access to the garden but there’s a door to the garden off the kitchen 🙂 Love the videos and your house is stunning! ☺️
