Honestly, with the Kaito files DLC being a thing, where you can play as the titular guy himself, I doubt Judgment would simply be cut short, due to the legal matters with Yagami's actor. Heck, they could easily go the route of having the story pull a Daigo in Yakuza 3 on Yagami, and have the over-arching mystery jumpstart from Kaito and Sugiura figuring out what caused it, and basically tracing the proverbial breadcrumbs back to what would've lead to someone, in an attempt to silence Yagami, leaving him hospitalized and possibly in an indefinite coma, near the beginning of the game, in a classic "who dunnit" manner.
After beating Lost Judgment, I can safely say that this is now my favorite game in the series, to me it exceeded expectations, as well as the first game. If only the story was as tight as the first one.
Yeah Yagami got quite a bit too preachy for me by the end. Constantly going on and on about other characters having blood on their hands because of their view of justice, while completely ignoring that he has blood on his hands too because he ignored the pleas from others to leave things alone for his own pursuit of what he thinks justice is.
@@mjc0961 That may be, and it may seem like there isn't a right answer but Kuwana took his vendetta a bit too far so in the end, like it or not, Yagami was actually right.
Having just finished it, I actually felt the society-wide problems at the focus of the narrative were clear as day, so I disagree that the story was "messy" just because it didn't focus as much on personal growth as the previous game. In many ways, the main cast's growth from Judgment is what prompted them to get involved as "all-in" as they do, secure in their convictions, when they could've easily ignored it all since it wasn't "personal". So what do you do with characters that are secure in their convictions? Give them foils that challenge their beliefs, which they did. I love conversations where two characters basically debate back and forth "I'm not going to move. You move." I do agree that mechanically the game can be messy, with so many layered systems, mini-games, and conversation styles, that the quality is quite varied, from excellent to terrible, though that's an RGG problem in general, taking the "shotgun" or "buffet" approach without much refinement. Taken individually most of the mini-games and side cases have tons of problems but as diversions they are "acceptable" or "value adders".
Yeah it’s worrying that this might be the last Judgment instalment, anyway RGG could take another genre turn and still come out with something amazing. You should do an episode on the maps of yakuza games and how far they have come in texture and atmosphere detail since PS2 era. Thanks mate.
I'm down if they make Binary Domain sequel but with Yakuza casts, kinda like how they did with the samurai games. That would attract old and new fans of Binary Domain.
@@therealrouges2341 well there was a news story of the original director of the first two Yakuza games on PS2 returning to Sega and rumors of nagoshi leaving broke out. So maybe something there?
It's fine if Yagami and Kaito aren't always the focus of the story. With Kazuma Kiryu, his involvement with the Yakuza made it easier to have a personal involvement in the stories. A detective, on the other hand, must work with clients, most of whom will be strangers, making it more difficult for Yagami to be the central focus of any particular narrative. Far from being a bad thing, such a set up creates different storytelling opportunities as the narratives can, as they often do in detective stories, focus on the clients. The first game works with Yagami at the center because it shows his origin as a detective. If at any time it's possible for him to have a personal connection to a client or case, whether it's at the outset of the story or revealed later on, or if the writers choose to make him the focus of the narrative, that's great too. But any connection he has shouldn't feel forced or contrived.
This is my favourite game out of the series including yakuza series. Had one of the best finale chapters, top tier villain, best boss fights, great story and has the best combat.
I watched the Hero series with Takuya Kimura when it came out. I think the extended stories reflect the format of the TV series quite well however no doubt the twists and turns will definitely feel exhausting.
The post game roadmap content as kaito a playable character are Giving me hopes that the series is not ending yet. Hopefully kaito can be our next new protagonist or hell even sugiura since he's also a detective. I find myself loving the first game and hearing the sequel can get messy and fumbles on its ideas makes me not wanting to end yet even if its the last we see of yagami.
I'm still early into the game but I'm really enjoying the refined combat: the new Snake style is a lot of fun and the two returning styles feel better realised, Crane in particular. l'll hold off on commenting on the story seeing as this is the kind of plot where the quality of the resolution can make or break it, I'll just have to wait and see if that clicks with me.
Really loved this video. Weirdly enough, it makes me excited to find out just how far they really wanted to go with this game - both in terms of exploring heavier themes and in just how they weave everything together. The original Judgment had a truly incredible story, so I'm quite intrigued after your review to see if it stacks up on my end.
Dude you were going to get a "thumbs up" anyway, but your spot-on reference to The Wire's season 4 solidifies it. What a thorough review. Thank you mate!
Thank you for the outstanding review. It appears this game doesn't look as "clean" as the first Judgement. As this has a more arcadey, busier look and is more over the top in battles etc. Is this an accurate perception?
I'd say fidelity-wise it's night and day between the two games which is wild considering how good the original already looked, but in the sense you're talking about, I guess you could say that. There's certainly a lot more going on mechanically with the combat this time round-I've heard people discussing how the combat here feels as stale as it always has done or whatever, and I couldn't disagree more (I've always liked the combat, and this time around it's even more fun to mess around with).
You mentioned it might be the end of the franchise for judgment but that’s related to the usage of the actor for yagami. They could easily just use a new protagonist for another game like in Yakuza like a dragon
But the actor doesn’t play the English vioice I believe for the English audio. It’s played by a different person. The issue is his face is probably a patent so they can’t use anymore the main character. They would either change character or give us the side character as the main character I heard is the DLC
Or straight up replace the actor. The fans wouldn't be sad about replacing a whinny actor to keep the series alive. Just go the Last of Us way and model a face that kinda looks like the actor but not enough to get into legal troubles.
It's probably why there's going to be Kaito's Story DLC in 2022. Might be a test to see if the series could continue with Kaito as the main lead replacing Yagami.
Thoroughly enjoyed this game. Infinite Wealth I still feel is the best overall but this was a great story and can sit side by side with Like A Dragon. I didn’t find it messy particularly. These games do sprawl and allow you freedom to slow the story down. I never minded the fractured nature of it. Part of its charm. I am very excited to see what RGG do next.

Yeah the US box art for Yakuza has always been hit or miss but this is by far one of the worst yet. Don’t know how they went from Yakuza 7’s awesome flashy yellow palette to Yagami goatse
This is gonna be a bit all over the place I didn't really gel with the 1st Judgment or Yagami. I thought he was written far too dry and his VA lacked emotion. The overabundance of tailing missions and the lack of interesting side content along with the bare bones combat made it feel like what Yakuza 6 was to the Yakuza series. A transition with a lot of kinks that needed ironing out. Lost Judgment they did that and improved pretty much everything. It's Judgments Yakuza 7. Yagami is a lot more relatable thanks to RGG putting him into more hillarious and heart warming fish out of water side content moments. The serious moments feel a lot more engaging and genuine and less cheesy/distracting. The 1st judgment went overboard on the honourifics and just didnt know when to shut up and let the visuals like camera work and facial animations tell the story "Yagami san, it's Kaito san, oh hi Kaito san I'm on my way kaito san ok Yagami san see you soon Yagami san" it has a better use of music as well for example with that soft moody deus ex esq sytnth in dialogue rather than that overbearing rock guitar they used in 1. 10:21 Zero punches in that regard? None of the victims took matters into their own hands and tried to kill their bullies and Yagami having to restrain them. It does address the bullying issue but makes the victims nothing more than someone to be pitied and not see the consequences of a a victim standing and plotting payback even if it ruins their standing. Yes I know their loved ones do it for them, but none of the victims ever muster the sociopathic willpower to plot an attempt to get payback
honestly if just talking about bullying and suicide is enough to make something have a "warning" in front than the world needs to be less sensitive like really, how is anyone supposed to learn and grow if we have to warn people before we talk about something that can have any effect on them, unless the "video" is what he is talking about in which case I kinda get it but even that is something people should see as a way to remind people that anyone can be evil and kids shouldn't get a pass just for being young
