The argument never ending doesn't mean that there is no definitive answer. After the Copa America win, like it or not, Messi is the greatest footballer to ever play, I honestly don't know why this is still even a discussion. I am just saying, the guys stats are insane, even without winning previous international trophies, he would come out winning the best player award and golden ball of those tournaments. And the only player that can even touch his great 15 years longevity is Ronaldo, and even then, Messi stats and records beats his convincingly. I honestly don't know how Messi isn't the GOAT LOL.
Being danish may (or not) give me the right to discard Bendtner from this "league" he is just a very stupid young man - wish him all the best anyway, but really ..
I loved Robert Lewandowski's answer. A symbol of an intelligent player. He deserved the Ballon D'or more than a few people I can think of like Michael Owen for example
Michael Owen was a fuckng phenomenon in his youth. Maybe im the lower half of Ballon D'Or winners but if he never got injured he would probably be considered one of the best of his generation.
But Messi and Ronaldo started playing with the greats such Ronaldo ,Ronaldonho, Zidane ,… and many more Since they were 17 yes of age . And all of those give a nod to Messi and second to him Ronaldo ( CR 7) So it is settled .
It's honestly incredibly annoying regardless. Messi & Ronaldo probably both deserved one for them to truly complete football as one of the greatest of all time. But I can't really say that even without one they wouldn't have been some of the best of all time. Putting up that type of barrier just feels disgusting, especially with the reasoning behind them sometimes.
@@andrewgonzalez6525 I don't hate him. He is not my favorite but I respect how he adjusted his game to be important for the team. Although I do not hold his fanboys in very high regard😂
I’m cool with anyone liking Ronaldo more than Messi (as a Messi fan). However the toxicity in the debate is wild. Ronaldo isn’t going to respect your argument nor would Messi. As a Messi fan Ronaldo is amazing. They’re not going to send you a signed jersey for defending them. Being #2 isn’t being trash. Never understood how anyone can view either Messi or Ronaldo as bad.
Ikr. As a Ronaldo fan, I do respect Messi. And if you are up for an argument establishing how Messi is better than him by giving the examples of his dribbling skills, visionary passes and playmaking, I would agree. But I'd have my points as well. Accurate finishing, showing absolute best performance in crucial situations and scoring in whatever angle he likes(even if it might seem impossible to score) in impossible ways. But what I really don't like is commenting negatively under any post that emphasizes his achievements and accolades. Instead of appreciating, some annoying fans would type "PENALDO" or "MESSI >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PENALDO", "THE REAL GOAT IS MESSI". I mean just "Why?". Nobody dragged those into the conversation of discussing about Ronaldo. Who cares who's better than whom. After all they respect each other and they both are thriving.
@@neotank874 I prefer Ronaldo as a person definitely, and so I like Ronaldo more. However when watching them you realize that the natural skill or talent of Messi is just much more impressive. Look at how many defenders he effortlessly goes past for example. Its art to watch.
Pele is seriously underrated by kids nowadays. Seriously, look how many votes the guy got from the some of the greatest players in history. Totally deserves the confidence he has today
Pele let his doughter die, he said that she was not your doughter, i guess their actions outside the camp turns him lower popular than he was able to be
Because Pele's big 2 claims is World Cups and Goals. For World Cups he wasn't the best player on his own team for 2 of those wins and for Goals he just lies about his goal tally
C Ronaldo is a great player, but is kinda pathetic that he voted himself knowing he's not even close to Messi. He's a great athlete but Leo is the essence of football, it's a genius.
@@adrianpaulochoa9825 I'm not agree. Close to Messi is Maradona, is Pele, is Ronaldo O fenomeno. He's close only in goals ( in some items he's on top actually, but remember he's older and he has like 150 matches more played) but he's not close when we talk about football itself. Messi is not only a striker, he's a playmaker, he's dribbling is superb, he has an incredible control, vision and precision....well he's a genius! C.Ronaldo can't even dribble a cone and has an incredible amount of penalty goals.... No, he's not close.

A hundred years will pass before we see a great positive competition between two players! Hats off to Leo and CR7 for gracing this beautiful game. I'm previlleged to have lived before they played the game until the day they will hang up their boots. If someone asks, tell them I lived in the Era of Messi and Cristiano. They have been such a blessing to football. From a CR7 faithful
It really hurts me that no one names Cruijff who shaped football for 2 of the biggest clubs in the world and made modern football. He is the only one on this list who formed football by being more than just a good player.
I'm glad to see Di Stefano here since he is usually so overlooked in the GOAT discussions. He was the clear best player and leader in a team that won 5 champions leagues, 8 La Ligas, 1 Copa America, and he also won the "Super Ballon D'Or" which was awarded to the best out of all Ballon D'Or winners until the moment (in 1989) Players like Maradona and Ronaldo Nazario had a few amazing seasons that impressed the world, and they are probably the best ever if we are talking only about peak seasons, but their careers felt a bit short compared to the longevity of Messi and CR7. However, Di Stefano does actually compare with Messi and CR7 in terms of longevity through the years

Notice how most of Messi votes are from neutral legends, many greats who never played with or against Messi, nor ever coached him still rate him as the best. That's because they see magic in his play, it's second to none. Messi is the greatest the world has ever witnessed🐐, the others are great too🙏. And Cruyff not getting a vote made me upset😟
Messi is just something else entirely. He made me a Barça fan back in 2006 when i was only 10 years old. I was a Chelsea fan then btw. Back to Messi, the dude is just magical. Not just a goalscorer and i must emphasize on that. It makes sense coz he learnt from arguably the greatest midfield duo in the history of football (Xavi and Don Andreas). Especially now in PSG where he's apparently "finished". Most assist in the league and countless playmaking plays. He's basically playing as a midfielder now and thats why he's scoring less. But to say that Messi cant score is sheer nonsense. He's one of the greatest goalscorers of all time and thats far from his only contribution to the game. The dude is the most complete player ever. In his prime, he was untouchable. His nickname in his youth days were 'The Unmarkable'. Again that's just one of the nicknames he has. Dribbling to him is easier than breathing. Simple football at it's finest level. Godlike if you ask me. So yeah Messi all the way for me. He's just too good on and off the pitch. Doesnt dive, lives a humble family life and doesn't do much celebrity nonsense. In the words of Gary Lineker, if players were to use Leo as their model, the game would be so much better instantly. I strongly believe in that.

As a Real Madrid fan and watching as outsider, I think Messi is the GOAT. Like, for real, I've never been so scared of a player just taking the ball in mid pitch and destroy your midfield and defense just like that. However, Messi is just once in generation, his gifts are just top level. It's delightful to watch and you just can't hate him. unless, yes, he scores you in the 92 minutes of the Clasico in your own stadium, huh. Now my personal experience, playing in the pitch in sub-15 leagues (I had to retire early at 16 since I have a chest condition) my role model was CR7. Messi was gifted, Ronaldo, not. He worked his ass off to be and have the reputation he has; he is a machine. When scouts see a magic player, it's instant scout. And very few hold to that magic, that why I also think Messi is hard work but because he knew someone was willing to take his crown. What do I mean? The CR7 mentality pushed the limits of Messi, he felt threatened as well as Barca. Back there when 2008-2011 Barca dominated but later with Mou and CR7, Madrid started to show that gods can bleed, and Barca was beatable. Messi started to take more care of himself (you can watch interviews saying what he ate and his habits) and understood that magic isn't everything. Golden years for football arrived and there's no dispute that is respectable who would you choose as the GOAT. The toxicity is insane, because not a lot of people see or they refuse to see that, yes, Messi is the GOAT, but thanks to CR7 and the rivalry. See it like the Joker to Batman, the Yin and Yang, Light and Dark. You can choose one, but you need the other. Messi is the best, period. However, the best football athlete as a whole, as role model, the perfect example that hard work, exceed your limits and do more than others do to, CR7 is the GOAT. Hardwork beats talent, 100%. That's why Messi had to get his shit together and that's why, both got the best out of the other. The outcome? The greatest rivalry in sports history, which brought so many golden years to football in form of goals, players, quality of game, etc. These two changed footballs, as DiStefano did, as Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane and so on. This was their generation and I don't think it matters who is the GOAT or not, but the impact they had in football as a whole.
That's a great take on the debate, I agree with every thing you said, but Ronaldo was talented, obviously not as much as messi was but still he was extremely talented.
@@yes-wh1zj Both had the talent yes, but what I mean is Ronaldo’s talent to be honest is his mentality more than his dribbles and skills. Why? I think if it was just his dribbles and stuff, like before, it would ended like many Joga bonito or fancy players, they don’t adapt. He does, thanks to his mentality. Maybe is a lowkey weird take but that’s what I think. His mentality is the best trait, since before, he wasn’t the most skilled, nor stronger or fastest player, but his mentality drove him to it
@@zura3844 agreed, Ronaldo's best trait besides his mentality is his ability to adapt, and make the most of what he has, we were lucky to see all this, we didn't realize how good we had it.
@@zura3844 Ronaldo switched from an dribbling, chaotic winger to penalty box poacher since 2013. And thats legitimate, he changed his style because he wanted to chase those goal records and outcompete Messi. But players with physical style and diva attitude never age gracefully. Messi did multiple switches in his carreer aswell, hes the more complete and adaptable player who ages very fine due to that.

I believe the greatest is Messi. However, I feel like I need to mention that it's a shame that defensive players such as Beckenbauer, Moore, Cannavaro, Maldini, Yashin and Buffon can often be overlooked in such discussions because of how difficult it is for them to stand out compared to their attacking counterparts. Really appreciate this video and I love your content. 😇
@@LeftJoystick Firstly, I'd like to acknowledge that whenever discussing this, the answer will always be subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinion and in saying that I respect anyone else's opinion and I probably won't see their choice and their argument for that choice as invalid simply because it isn't the same as mine. I understand that as people we value different things and that is what often leads to our decision. One of the main reasons I chose Messi is because of how easy and effortless he makes everything he does on the field look. As someone who's played football, not professionally though 😅, I am aware of how difficult certain things can be to execute. And to watch him do it with such ease and precision is something I truly admire. At times it becomes difficult to explain beyond what I've mentioned above and using stats could lead to endless and admittedly engaging discussions about why I believe he's the greatest but I'd rather not considering that people know a lot of his stats already. As to why I didn't mention Ronaldo (I assume you were referring to Cristiano Ronaldo), I was just answering the question on who I believed the greatest was. I actually really admire both Messi and Ronaldo, I just believe Messi is a cut above everyone else.
Great video man, congrats. I have one observation though: If you had considered more brazilian legends such as Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Zico, Marcos, Rogerio Ceni (120+ goals as a goalkeeper), Romario (how the hell hes not in this list) and other WC winners along side Pele, you would have got a whoooole different result there. Honestly, I think this debate is endless because as Lewa said, its impossible to compare Pelé to Messi, or CR7 to Maradona. Different ages, different contexts, different teams and all that. But if I had to choose one, I would have to give it to Pelé. He's undisputed in the ("better than everyone else" at his period of action).

I’ve had countless arguments about this over the years where eventually it got to the point I didn’t think it was worth it anymore (even though I do enjoy the debates). I didn’t have the privilege of seeing people like Pele, Maradona, or R9 play, but I’ve watched Messi and CR7 dominate this game year after year. What I think everyone can agree on is the consistency that these two players have put on display has never been seen before. You could make the argument that their consistency alone would make them the two greatest players to ever step foot on a pitch. Obviously it’s going to come down to opinion and personal preference. There’s no denying these are the two greatest of this generation, but for me Lionel Messi does things with a football and without it that I really believe we may never see ever again. He possesses a talent that at many times seems extraterrestrial. As much as I love CR7 and the machine that he is, Messi for me does things that leaves me saying “how in the world did he just do that?”. Just having that affect, before we even get into all of their record breaking stats and awards, puts Messi at another level for me. He does things in all aspects of the game that majority of players wouldn’t be able to fathom. It’s certainly a privilege to have been able to watch them both over the years and I truly believe we won’t ever see two players dominate the game for as long as they have ever again. But like I said for me, there’s just no one like Messi.
As a Ronaldo fan I achnowledge Messi being a far superior talent than Ronaldo. I don't think there is no doubt in regards to talent and even some skills that not even hardwork can get you. Messi is one of the Goats alongside Ronaldo, Maradona, Pele, Cruyff... But I still can't put Messi as GOAT number one because in fact we never saw Messi playing without being surrounded my the best players in the world, we never saw him playing in a defensive, counter attack or lack of players around him. It is true he has always been protected by Johan Cruyff philosophy tiki taka that makes Barcelona Barcelona, apart from goat players around him and Barcelona being the biggest dog in the league. One thing is winning a race with a Mercedez Benz, and other with a Ferrari. For me Messi has always driven a Bugatti. Messi deserves to be playing for the best clubs in the world. But that also takes a lot of credit in the GOAT debate because he won't be as important as he would be if he played for a smaller club. Look what happened to Spain and Barcelona with retired Xavi and aging Iniesta? And I'm not lying, look at the facts, Spain is no longer near of becoming champs again and we only hear about the demise of Barcelona apart from spending billions. So Messi is the best at Barcelona. But could he still be best in a smaller club? We never saw this and his style doesn't fit it
i dont think i have a favorite player, i just like to watch football, and its always like, ohh this is the goat and i am like, how can you say lol (but it seems like every goat can do a bit of what every goat can do, in terms of sheer stats, who the goat though probably cristiano, but at the same time, messi got 91 goals in a years once, who has done that, thats insane cant deny that) all the goats are insanely good and all or everyone will say someone else compared to what someone else says is the goat lol

Well I remember reading a debate with both sides exposing theirs arguments. I mean Messi vs Ronaldo. And it was basically resumed to this: Messi's side: Messi is better because advanced stats, like Expected Points Added and Efficiency Per Match, say so. Ronaldo's side: Ronaldo is better because he is more athletic, and because we think Messi has had better teammates during his career, and Ronaldo has won an international championship with Portugal. So I'll stand by Messi. OKAY DEBATE OVER, MESSI IS A WORLD CHAMPION NOW
Messi already has his International trophy. And i would like to correct Messi’s side: Messi is better just by looking at him lmao eye test says it - dominates literally every aspect of the game. Still, some butthurt people say this is subjective so it’s like “ok, sure let’s check stats...” - Messi shreds on literally everything except heading. Messi is better, that’s a fact.
@@danielc1291 THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE EYE TEST! It’a debatable, yes. But the one thing that’s clear to everybody except toxic CR7 fans , is that Messi is a better footballer. He makes complicated things look routine, and is a football genius in terms of decision making. Cristiano is terrific historical goalscorer, but that’s it.

Never understood how anyone can view either Messi or Ronaldo as bad.
lets talk about the real ronaldo when we talk about goat? ...

It really hurts me that no one names Cruijff who shaped football for 2 of the biggest clubs in the world and made modern football. He is the only one on this list who formed football by being more than just a good player.
I'm glad to see Di Stefano here since he is usually so overlooked in the GOAT discussions.

What’s your justification for Messi and not even mentioning Ronaldo? lmao
@@LeftJoystick cause Ronaldo is not a defensive player ? Lol he'd have to mention a dozen players then.

What a great channel. Love your hilarious coverage.
But like I said for me, there’s just no one like Messi.
briliant koment.

I just love CR7's mentality, he responded with Zero hesitation.
Detestable.
Messi and CR7 are probably the most impressive players we've seen, maybe ever. But if everything was on the line, I would give the ball to Zidane.
P.S: if he doesn't headbutt anyone that is.
Dude. Your videos are so good. Thank you.

Good video. Pele for me, especially considering the brutal era he played in and we only have a fraction of footage. Quick mind, powerful, skilful, inventive and deadly.
During his time there was much competition for him

here after messi won a world cup with argentina
All of the players are great but to me none of their playing style technique or skills was unique except one ,except the GOAT LIONEL MESSI .
Don’t get me wrong I believe all of them were good but I have never seen no player have such control over the ball as Lionel messi he is just unbelievable.Everytime he plays he makes my jaw drop .It feels like it’s every other day he dribble 4/5 players at a single time in matches .

@@slywhite7290 i mean goat 😁😁😁
My big black hock
Knew it would be Messi before even watching, the god of the game
Well I remember reading a debate with both sides exposing theirs arguments. I mean Messi vs Ronaldo.
And it was basically resumed to this:
Messi's side: Messi is better because advanced stats, like Expected Points Added and Efficiency Per Match, say so.
And i would like to correct Messi’s side:
Messi is better just by looking at him lmao eye test says it - dominates literally every aspect of the game. Still, some butthurt people say this is subjective so it’s like “ok, sure let’s check stats...” - Messi shreds on literally everything except heading.
Messi is better, that’s a fact.
@@danielc1291 THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE EYE TEST! Messi just has a vision of the game that is a cut above all else (his passes and assists are actually insane ; you can see that he gave the ball a spin so it bounces towards his teammates so they have an easier time scoring) + he dribbles + HE SCORES SO MANY GOALS. And Messi is short, so it explains why he doesn't score headers often. But that header against Manchester United in the UCL final was so memorable. He jumped so high.
CR7 is only comparable to Messi in goal scoring. That's it. Everything else Messi is far superior.
Now that messi has won an international title, ronaldo fans have no reason to say messi isn't the goat

Excellent work sir. It is and always will be subjective. I've seen most of the great players since the seventies and remember thinking at the time, that I would never see players this great again but the beauty of football is that it keeps producing wonderful players with breathtaking skills and speed of thought. At the moment Messi and R7 are on another level statistically with Lewandowski reaching the heights also. The bar has been set incredibly high but you just know that football will surprise again and create new stars and heroes.
Grew up loving Saviola, but if u ask me the best, he is R9. He may have a very short prime but from his youth to his prime to his injury to his recovered years to even his fat years is so so so GOOD. That I even count his "what could have been". That is phenomenal.
R9 is my greatest player of all time..
Am I the only one who plays fifa while having this guy's videos in the background? Love ur videos bruh, keep it up!
On a side note Wenger should become a sporting director because he has elite vision for great youth..
With Adam Johnson as head youth scout yes
@@redlightning2322 true I forgot to mention his management team that also plays a huge role
Only individual trophies count when you’re comparing single players, so name me one with more ballon dor.
R9 has 3 ballon d'ors. Does that mean that CR7 or Leo are bettet than him???
@@ΒασίληςΑγγελόπουλος-ξ3δ 🤣🤣 There are a lot of factors to look at, one being trophies (Individuals trophies). There is NO way you can say one player is better than the other because of trophies he won collectively as a team.
@@ΒασίληςΑγγελόπουλος-ξ3δ Please bro, You can compare R9 vs CR7 (CR7 wins) but Messi 😭 is cut from a different cloth! in every aspect of the game he beats any player by a mile!

You gotta make another one of these in 15 years when all the future legends who have played with and against Messi and CR7 retire.
Leo Messi cemented himself as the goat after the world cup win...even though he was the goat before that...the win stretched the gap a light year away from the other greats
" Lionel Messi can't be the GOAT because hasn't won anything with Argentina " well funny how in 1 year that sentence aged very very well (Copa America, Finalissima and World Cup)
Anyone here right after Messi and Argentina won the 2022 World Cup?😉
1)Messi
2)Pele
3)Maradona
4)Cristiano Ronaldo
5)R9
6)Thierry Henry
7)Di Stefano
8)Ronaldinho
These are the best players of all time (so sorry neymar)
And Messi wins the World Cup while having probably the best individual performance of all time once again
You can hardly argue who the 2nd best is (CR7) but saying someone is better than Messi is pure delusion and dishonesty
As for me,both are impossible to replace and both are truly goat in world football
It’a debatable, yes.
But the one thing that’s clear to everybody except toxic CR7 fans , is that Messi is a better footballer. He makes complicated things look routine, and is a football genius in terms of decision making.
Cristiano is terrific historical goalscorer, but that’s it. The most successive decision making he can make in game is spot the space and run into it to score.
While in the other hand Messi scoring is never the only headline !
(i have many Real Madrid players ne CR7 fans who love the guy, but they just know that Messi is a better footballer)
