One of the most, if not the most, candid and honest orchestral musicians in the world. Known for his brawny playing, but offstage an incredibly sensitive and vulnerable man.
I am a trombone player, the "Hop" idea totally changed my playing. Instantly solved one of my biggest playing problem that I was trying to figuring it our for a long time. I am very happy. Thank you Phil Myers and Sarah.
Sarah, you are getting really, really good at this! Phil's interview was so well done-you got him talking and introspective like a seasoned interviewer and kept me engaged the whole time. ...and to do it live-I'm impressed!
Love it! Thanks to all involved! Phil, you are legend.
Phil's advice to listen to recordings is great... and almost totally contrary to what I was taught at one point. As someone who holds a music degree, but took almost 18 years off of the instrument before picking it up again, I found so much to learn in this interview. Always a pleasure to see and hear the legendary Phil Myers speak about horn playing and making music.
And the M1 is not a mouthpiece for mere mortals. I played one briefly in college, but it nearly sucked my lungs out. 🤣
What a grounded, level-headed guy he is -- and so compassionate about the whole beta-blocker issue. A wonderful interview. :-)
Fantastic, Sarah! Great interview! Thanks for sharing, and keep it up!
My morning started from this cool Interview. I enspired and enjoyed a lot! 🙂 Thank you, Sarah Willis! 🤝📯
1/3 upper!!!! I have been doing that since 1978. It may not be the way for all, but what a glorious relief to hear him say that. I drop my jaw for the low notes (another faux pas ((like that French reference?))) as well. Basics are good. Working with what you got is the real thing. I have always taught my students to use what they have.
Agreed, it was awesome to hear him say "Experiment with your mechanics! As I went against the Farkas orthodoxy of 2/3 upper and flipped it to 2/3 lower, and it worked after heavy practice." Independently, I did the same, after thinking about the lips, vibrating planes, and muscles. I did the same and OMG it revolutionized my approach and playing. Validation is awesome.
Phil Meyers was a saxophonist...till he changed to Horn. He is good friends with Albert Regni, principal saxophonist NY philharmonic. I knew both of them over 15 years ago.
Bravo um intrevist. Bay
When Phil was on, he had no peers.
"Did you hang out together?" "Aw HELL yeah."
When Phil talks about that "mental blank slate" around 25 min. in, that is quite important to bring out. I think what you can add, is an almost Zen trance-like mental state, of being in the moment musically. Vince Penzarella also taught me that at a lesson several years ago. Mind over matter is so true.

Phil, Can you advise on learning rapid single, double and triple tonguing. Robin Blech, Varese, Italy.

Hey guys. I guess there's a lot of horn players around here. I have a question: is this horns at 2'50 of this piece, playing this weird glissando effect ? ruclips.net/video/8_9aZaSl-5I/видео.html
I don't remeber having heard that before. How do you do that on a horn ? Thanks !
Yes, those are horns
In the upper register, notes are so close together that "ripping" between them can give a glissando effect. This is due to the harmonics getting closer together as we play higher.
@@joeytroiaiii6915 Thanks !
in spanish Sarah please!
Ehhhhhh, hm hm hm hm 24:00
If you are going to try any form of Beta Blocker, please do so with proper guidance from a medical professional. Mr. Myers was pretty irresponsible in omitting this guidance. Beta blockers can easily kill if the incorrect dose is given, and should only be used as a last resort once all other methods of controlling performance anxiety have been explored.
beanbag
20$ a lesson is outrageous? That's the standard price for half hour lessons here in Texas, and from non world famous teachers...
It was 50 years ago
Sarah talks too much....otherwise...great to see this...HI PHIL.
She does talk too much. I want to hear Phil
