  • Hello again RUclips, another one of my restored gas engines, this one being a 1951 Briggs & Stratton Model 6-B-S, it is a 4 cycle, with a 2" bore, 2" stroke, and uses a "Vacu-Jet" style carburator. The "B" in the model number stands for "ball baring" meaning that this engine has ball bearings, and the "S" stands for "suction type carb." hence the "Vacu-Jet" carburator. This is one of the earlier engines featuring a rope recoil start. A great engine painted in its' original color, leading me to believe this engine was off a Eclipse reel mower. It is a great runner as well, and with it mounted on one of my display boards it makes for a awesome presentation at the engine shows. I also use the surface of this display boards to place some engine data on it, to give the viewing public alittle information on the engine. Please watch in HD if you can, enjoy, rate, and comment. Please add me to your friends list and subscribe. Thanks, Enginenut :-)

What some people won't collect. I had one of these on a large commercial edger I bought for $15. The carb was cracked but it still started and ran like a top. It worked better than the newer smaller edger I bought for $35. I won't share any minibike horror stories here, but will say that is a nice restoration. The engine I had on the edger was super clean when I threw it away.

They weren't painted this well when they were brand new. Not even close.
Nice work. Nice runner, too. You really have that thing dialed in.

I used a light grey primer, and Krylon "gloss green" paint. The finish still looks as good as the day I painted it, and has remained durable thru all of the engine shows it has went to-not to mention the hours of run time as well :-)

Thanks, I really like the 6B Series engines. Many people do not know that Briggs is responsible for the FIRST all aluminum engines. It took 4 years of development & testing until it was perfected. This was a real technological break through of the time and the aluminum engines revolutionized the lawn & garden industry. Today ALL small engine manufacturers utilize Briggs & Stratton's revolutionary design.

@1941Bismarck Hello, thanks for the compliment. Using the ASECC's web site for small engine reference, I followed the chart of "Letters following basic model numbers" the basic model number being a 6, first letter following a "B" meaning "Ball Bearing", lastly the "S" for the famous "Vacu-Jet" sytle suction carb. It is wierd how the letter "H" is not on the plate being it is a horizontal engine. Check out the site is it incomplete/inaccurate? Let me know.

@th19940305 Hi, I didn't need major parts for this engine, a engine friend gave me a box of "era correct" Champion J-8's, which I use one on every restoration, the decal kit I purchased from a guy out in Oregon who does excellent reproduction decal kits. Other then that it was just a tear down, paint strip, prep, prime, paint, and re-assemble. Finally, the gas tank, and carb. gasket I cut out of a sheet of gasket material.

@TheNWONOW Hello, Look closely...see the " marks-it says 2" 4 cycle-gas only, 2" bore- refering to the outside diameter of the cylinder wall, and 2" stroke- refering to the amount of piston travel. I had to double check myself to make sure I didn't have a typo.

Enginenut, 6B-S.... "6"= (six cubic inch), "B"= Design (in this case Aluminum), "S"= Suction type carburetor. This design did not have ball bearings during these years.
The 6B Series was not introduced until 1953, it replaced the Model 6, a cast iron engine. The 6B series were made for 5 years. In late 1957 they were replaced by the 60000 series (2 HP) "Kool Bore" design. Your engine was manufactured between 1953 - 1957.
    Best Regards,
    Ken

This seems like a confusing engine for ID...I referenced the ASECC.com's Briggs & Stratton Manufacturing Date Listings and for me I don't see a 6B separate column.
      From ASECC's webpage..
Engines having special features are identified by additional letters or numerals assigned to the basic Model Letter or Number such as AL, 8R6, NS, etc. For Example the 8R6 is a model 8 engine with a 6:1 reduction gear and the NS is a model N with a suction carburetor. An explanation of these suffix letters is given below.
      Letters Following Basic Model Letters
      G Generator H High Speed
L Aluminum Parts P Direct Crankcase Mounting
R Reduction Gear M Marine Conversion
S Suction Carburetor T Marine Transmission
      Letters Following Basic Model Numbers
B Ball Bearing C Automatic Choke
D Power Takeoff Revolves CW F Flange Mounting
H Horizontal Engine P Fuel pump
R Reduction Gear S Suction Carburetor
So by using this information this is how I made my engine ID. What am I mis-understanding from this information. Hope you like the video :-)

The year and month of manufacture is determined by the serial number. My 6B-S was made in April 1956. I'm sure you could find the year of manufacture on yours by asking on the "Smokstak" forum. That's how I found my DOM.. Good luck !
