My restored 1951 Briggs & Stratton Model "6-B-S" gas engine

- Hello again RUclips, another one of my restored gas engines, this one being a 1951 Briggs & Stratton Model 6-B-S, it is a 4 cycle, with a 2" bore, 2" stroke, and uses a "Vacu-Jet" style carburator. The "B" in the model number stands for "ball baring" meaning that this engine has ball bearings, and the "S" stands for "suction type carb." hence the "Vacu-Jet" carburator. This is one of the earlier engines featuring a rope recoil start. A great engine painted in its' original color, leading me to believe this engine was off a Eclipse reel mower. It is a great runner as well, and with it mounted on one of my display boards it makes for a awesome presentation at the engine shows. I also use the surface of this display boards to place some engine data on it, to give the viewing public alittle information on the engine. Please watch in HD if you can, enjoy, rate, and comment. Please add me to your friends list and subscribe. Thanks, Enginenut :-)

What some people won't collect. I had one of these on a large commercial edger I bought for $15. The carb was cracked but it still started and ran like a top. It worked better than the newer smaller edger I bought for $35. I won't share any minibike horror stories here, but will say that is a nice restoration. The engine I had on the edger was super clean when I threw it away.
They weren't painted this well when they were brand new. Not even close.
Nice work. Nice runner, too. You really have that thing dialed in.
Sure is one of a kind, Briggs and Stratton.
Model ZZ from '46, idles at half the speed. broke the governor spring at one point and it never stalled without an idle screw! I love playing with these old engines!
Wow, that is in great shape. Thumbs up!
We used to have one of these on a reel mower. I had to tell my father several times that it was a four-stroke engine.
Thank you very much, they are a blast to restore, and with alittle TLC over their lifetime will run forever!!!
Kudos to you sir! You've done great work and the engine looks like a museum piece!
Very Cool. Just bought one. Can't wait to start
COOL - classic engine in great shape. Thanks for sharing.
I used a light grey primer, and Krylon "gloss green" paint. The finish still looks as good as the day I painted it, and has remained durable thru all of the engine shows it has went to-not to mention the hours of run time as well :-)
Thank you!!! This engine was a fun restoration, glad you liked the video :-)
By looking at the serial number on the engine ID plate, then cross referencing the numbers on a small engine collectors web-site-ASECC-this site is awesome for information on these cool engines!
very very nice work man, cheers
Nice, clean restoration! I like the green paint...
Awesome job
I love those Briggs engines
Thanks fort the cool video

Happy trails
Tom
Thanks, I really like the 6B Series engines. Many people do not know that Briggs is responsible for the FIRST all aluminum engines. It took 4 years of development & testing until it was perfected. This was a real technological break through of the time and the aluminum engines revolutionized the lawn & garden industry. Today ALL small engine manufacturers utilize Briggs & Stratton's revolutionary design.
Excalllent work.. ! Thank You !
Nicely done! Just that Tecumseh starter handle sticks out :D
that engine looks and sounds perfect
The plate is in original condition, needless to say it has survived all these years near flawless. The engine was a barn find, so I would say it spent most of its life in there.
Looks beautiful and runs great
Lawnmower16 2012 Thank you, still to this day runs excellent.
That is an awsome engine. I am working on a Model 6 with the Flo Jet carburetor. It came off of an old reel mower. I reall ylike your engine. Great restoration!
Nice engine, your work is very good nice job!
Thanks, they are fun to restore :-)
Beautiful piece of american history.
that 1 nice looking and sounding motor
B+S is still selling the same basic design 60+ years later. :D
Thank you and ya I had three of them older motors and I built a mini chopper so I wanted to put an old reliable motor on it so my 93 year old pepere gave me the motors there all from about the same age but two needed block work and piston rings so I used the good block and now I just have to clean the points
Cool! Best of luck on the engine restoration :-)
Awsome engine! Runs like a swiss watch. I am currently working on a model 6 with the flo jet carburetor. We shall see. At any rate, good restoration.
Yes, this motor runs as good as it looks :-)
A few are "new old stock" ones I got from a fellow collector/restorer, and the others I cut from a sheet of gasket material.
Hey, lucky what u got there, as the older briggs are just going up in value. I have a 1954 briggs 5s that I just got a carb for and an old 2hp tank would work, that's one of my favorite models because The lines on the shroud
This is the original color for the engine, Briggs made these for Eclipse reel lawn mowers, and this was their product color.
Your Welcome, glad you enjoyed the video :-)
Well the 6bs is one of my favs
that is beautiful, :-) :-)
@workensmart This engine has a aluminum block and head. A early model of the cast iron to aluminum transition. Over time first it was the head changed over to aluminum while still retaining a cast iron block, then years later the block as well.
@1941Bismarck Hello, thanks for the compliment. Using the ASECC's web site for small engine reference, I followed the chart of "Letters following basic model numbers" the basic model number being a 6, first letter following a "B" meaning "Ball Bearing", lastly the "S" for the famous "Vacu-Jet" sytle suction carb. It is wierd how the letter "H" is not on the plate being it is a horizontal engine. Check out the site is it incomplete/inaccurate? Let me know.
@Boomer1947 Thanks...glad you enjoyed the video :-)
@CrazFilmz Yes, automotive high temp spray paints...best of luck on your engine restoration!
@outdoorsman310 Looking up this engine on the ASECC web-page the 5 and 6 "S"- engines "S" meaning for suction style carbs. these were used on the model line until June/July of 1957. Thanks for watching :-)
@th19940305 Hi, I didn't need major parts for this engine, a engine friend gave me a box of "era correct" Champion J-8's, which I use one on every restoration, the decal kit I purchased from a guy out in Oregon who does excellent reproduction decal kits. Other then that it was just a tear down, paint strip, prep, prime, paint, and re-assemble. Finally, the gas tank, and carb. gasket I cut out of a sheet of gasket material.
nice! thats an odd bore and stroke
Very nice engine. Congrats !! I subbed your channel......Frank
Yes, it is a oil bath filter.
I get them off of Ebay, there is a fella in Bend, OR. that makes reproduction decals, they are awesome looking, I use them on almost all of my small engine restorations. Once on Ebay search "bladesmithbendor", best of luck!!!
Hello, No I do not run any lead additive in any of antique engines, however they do see their share of run time at shows, sometimes just idling a tank of gas away.
Nice restoration! I have a 53 6s and I'm wondering do you run a lead additive in your gas? or did these engines run on unleaded gas back in there day? I'm not running any in mine because I figure its going to be a full restoration like yours and not ran that much.
I am still using original OEM points and condensers in all of my engine restorations.
Nice engine. I mow my lawn with an Eclipse rotary that has a 6b-h engine on it. The tappet clearances are loose and I was wondering if any cams, tappets or valves from any later Briggs engines would fit in it so I could tighten it up. Seems hard to find new parts for the engine on this mower. Thanks...
parts from the generic briggs & stratton 3.5HP lawn mower engine should fit perfectly
@GarrettJDB Yes, the original aluminum engine tag, while the decals are reproductions.
Hello, would you happen to know what the compression numbers should be? I have a 6bs that seems to have low compression. I'm thinking about having the valves lapped. Thanks
Yes sir I've recently bought a reel mower with a engine like that . Where can I find replacement parts for it to get it running and also restore it? Your help would be great.
Beautiful restoration! I've got an all original 61 Briggs, first year of the Easy Spin Starting. How did you paint this one? Whenever I paint em one little bump scratches the paint right off lol!
@mrdestoryit These engines have a oil dipper on the end of the crankshaft.
@th19940305 No, it is the original carb, just cleaned and repainted using a solvent resistant, aluminized paint.
Hello again , just wondering what size knurled nut you used for your spark plug ...I just picked up 6-32 but were to small ...
Where do you buy reproduction decals? I have a 1941 model IR6 that I may replace them on. Only the ol bath one is worn off amazingly. The rest are their but the ones on the round tank are faded.
What did you use to do your exhaust/muffler? I have the same engine to restore...not crazy about how close muffler is to fuel/carb.
I think that's a 55 or 56 model Briggs
1 6/10th hp found on Eclipse reel mowers
you need it to drive something as i love to hear the sound as the governer starts to work..nice engine
thanks I just picked up a pair ...what type of color green did you use ..I love it ....
Wow, that is gorgeous!! How much did it cost roughly to rebuild something like that?
Excellent video! I have some questions on the disassembly. How can I reach you?
Any idea where to get a new acujet carb?
Yeah, my 5s looks like a runner, but guess what? IT HAS NO SPARK. LOL. But i was screwing around, trying to get more spark one day , but it did the exact OPPOSITE hahaha
hola a todos, yo tengo un motor igual y me preguntaba que cilindrada es
Enginenut, this question comes 9 years later, but I wanted to know if you bought this engine new???? Looks too good to be as old as it is!!!!
@TheNWONOW I get them off of Ebay, there is a fella in Bend, OR. that makes reproduction decals, they are awesome looking, I use them on almost all of my small engine restorations. Once on Ebay search "bladesmithbendor", best of luck!!!
@TheNWONOW Hello, Look closely...see the " marks-it says 2" 4 cycle-gas only, 2" bore- refering to the outside diameter of the cylinder wall, and 2" stroke- refering to the amount of piston travel. I had to double check myself to make sure I didn't have a typo.
Enginenut, 6B-S.... "6"= (six cubic inch), "B"= Design (in this case Aluminum), "S"= Suction type carburetor. This design did not have ball bearings during these years.
The 6B Series was not introduced until 1953, it replaced the Model 6, a cast iron engine. The 6B series were made for 5 years. In late 1957 they were replaced by the 60000 series (2 HP) "Kool Bore" design. Your engine was manufactured between 1953 - 1957.
Best Regards,
Ken
This seems like a confusing engine for ID...I referenced the ASECC.com's Briggs & Stratton Manufacturing Date Listings and for me I don't see a 6B separate column.
From ASECC's webpage..
Engines having special features are identified by additional letters or numerals assigned to the basic Model Letter or Number such as AL, 8R6, NS, etc. For Example the 8R6 is a model 8 engine with a 6:1 reduction gear and the NS is a model N with a suction carburetor. An explanation of these suffix letters is given below.
Letters Following Basic Model Letters
G Generator H High Speed
L Aluminum Parts P Direct Crankcase Mounting
R Reduction Gear M Marine Conversion
S Suction Carburetor T Marine Transmission
Letters Following Basic Model Numbers
B Ball Bearing C Automatic Choke
D Power Takeoff Revolves CW F Flange Mounting
H Horizontal Engine P Fuel pump
R Reduction Gear S Suction Carburetor
So by using this information this is how I made my engine ID. What am I mis-understanding from this information. Hope you like the video :-)
The year and month of manufacture is determined by the serial number. My 6B-S was made in April 1956. I'm sure you could find the year of manufacture on yours by asking on the "Smokstak" forum. That's how I found my DOM.. Good luck !
BTW.. AWESOME little engine !
Special feature lettering only applies to cast iron briggs engines
I have an old edger with a briggs &Stratton engine model number 6bs type number 901039 and I was hoping you could tell me where I might be able to find a carburetor sure would appreciate your help
Jose Enriquez I would say the best place to find a carb. would be Ebay. Over the years I have found all sorts of new old stock items. If what you are looking for is not for sale check back often as it will probably show up for auction. Best of luck on your restoration!
how did you make the plate on the back look like new, the one with the model numbers that are engraved? i have the same engine so it would be great to know
Hello nice engine and great restauration. I have also got a old Briggs engine wich seems to have the same engine block as yours but has a different carburator and also not this type of pullstart. I have got a video on my channel about it and would enjoy a suggestion of you what kind of model i got in my possesion. Maybe makes it a little bit easyer to find a engine cover for it since that is missing on mine...
How many HP. And where can I get a piston, rod and rings for mine?
hey got a question about the engine where are the decals located other then the one on the blower housing and air cleaner, or is that it ?. I have the same engine basically but its a couple years newer. oh and the knurled nut I found out was 8-32 thread if anyone is interested cause im doing the same.
were can I get a breather housing like yours ....do they make reproductions
Where did you get that spark plug (screw on top), I'm looking for one as well ?
Are you still using points and condenser, or did you convert it?
Where did u get them original b&s labels? Im rebuilding a mid 50s brigs andbi wanna build it right
where did you get all the seals and gaskets
@chevyreaper The best place would be Ebay, I have seen "new old stock" as well as used ones pop up from time to time. I won a "NOS" one a few months back at a pretty decent price. I usually search either "Vintage Briggs Engines" or "Antique Briggs Engines", best of luck on your hunt.
I have a very similar Briggs engine/generator same color green I'm looking to see pretty cheap if you or anyone you know is interested. Its 4hp 4 cycle easy spin starting Briggs and Stratton.
My email is claredegroff@outlook.com if interested send me a contact information & I'll send you pictures.
is that an oil bath filter?
i have the same engine where can i get the decals for the oil bath cleaner
Where do I get parts to rebuild I have the same motor
Im just wondering but do these 1950's Briggs engines have an oil pump or a dipper on the end of the crankshaft?
when did they stop that style of carb?
@youngm33lz about 1 1/2 horse at 2,200 to 3,200 RPM.
Where can I get a carb for mine
Where didya get the new stickers,,? And could ya let me know the "best" website for information on Briggs & Stratton,,?There are so many,,Love your lil engine,,I have several 3hp horizontals,,great running lil engines,,
How did you determine the exact year? I have a 6BS 901071 146288. Same engine except I have a rope start and electric. How can I tell the year of mine?
What type of paint did you use?
were could i find a gas tank for one of these?
how do you know when it was made?
i have one of these same briggs. how many horse power do they make . thanks
1 6/10th hp
