This game is one of the most elegant designs of the past decade. Must play 5+ times to fully appreciate. All of the Epic Tale cards can be played around. They are swingy, but there are ways to play around that by carefully managing your actions. Also, the combat is as euro as it gets!! One by one elimination of either a piece or a card - you literally have perfect information about the outcome short of the epic tale cards that can be played, but even those can be played around… if you’re not sure of the outcome, you can retreat. So I’m not sure that’s an accurate criticism. The epic tale cards are essential: without them the game would be very chess-like and grow stale quickly. Once you know all the combos in the game, it becomes easy to play around them and mitigate opponents plans. Epic tales ensure the game can end through clever play and that the game doesn’t get stuck in an endless stalemate.
Thank you for literally reading my mind and putting it down as a comment! I’d like to support even further your insight regarding Epic Tale cards. Looking at all other aspects of play it’s quite clear they’re going for the “clever” type of gaming . One only needs asking “what is so clever about the Epic Tales?” and then it hits you: having a strong card in your hand is nothing compared to the skilled weaving of several cards at the right moment. You need to be clever to pull it off, and I agree it only shows up after repeated plays. But when it does, this game is unmatched in its rewarding gameplay experience. It’s also important to mention the stop condition added in the expansion called “we need a king” as it helps in putting a stop to overly stretched game sessions (and can be easily reproduced without needing the expansion).
Agreed. One thing I would add is that there are a bunch of cards that allows you to look at the epic tales cards in someone's hand or even steal one. Also if a player has a bunch of them in his hand then that is a good indication that he might pull off a trick during a clash. They are very situational though so that is quite an if. I was suprised this one even came up on this channel since it's so euro focused. So I'm not suprised by the eventual outcome. That said I thought this review was overall still really fair. Great game for those that want something more in the middle of the road.
Thanks for the review and for sharing with us on RUclips. I would have appreciated the review to come at the end instead of interspersed throughout the video. Chapters would be useful too.

Outstanding description and review.
I'd be curious to see your review on Dwellings of Eldervale. I'm thinking of area control here.
Like you I can see how Inis is hit or miss with me.
DoE is amazing! And while I love Inis too, I don't think the two games are very comparable...
Thanks for the review, I’ve been curious about this one for a while as it gets a lot of love. Looks like a weaker (albeit more beautiful) El Grande…
It is way more involved. El Grande is great though :)
