@@RagDraggo I hate Jerry Jones. I don't care about the NFL, either, and I won't support the Cowboys until JJ is G O N E... even if they win the SB. Which they won't, because Dak is not a championship level QB.
I remember this game as a 12 year old. I was a big Rams fan from So Cal. Somehow my father had gotten tickets and was so so excited. The Cowboys actually trained just down the street at CLU. All I really remember was that catch and that the game was essentially over by the end of the 1st quarter. I remember being high up in the end zone area across from the Pearson catch. At least I saw some of the action but what a disappointment. Funny to come across this video.

The Rams cruised through their 12-2 season as a potential NFC Super Bowl team. They gave up an NFL-low 135 points all season. The Cowboys were "rebuilding", gaining the wild card at 10-4, with 12 rookies playing huge parts, offensively and defensively. However, the Rams were no match for the Cowboys in either of the 2 games they played in 1975. The Cowboys dismantled the Rams offense in the season opener in Dallas, giving up only 11 first downs, and just 148 total yards, winning 18-7. In this NFC Championship game, the Rams had only 9 first downs, and just 118 total yards, losing this time, 37-7. Just 20 first downs, and 266 total yards in 2 games combined. On the flip side, Dallas pierced the Rams run defense, rushing for 197 yards in the opener, and 195 yards in this game. In 1975 at least, the Cowboys dominated the Rams, probably as bad as one team can to the other. In 1976 though, the Rams would get a little revenge, beating the Cowboys 14-12, in the NFC Divisional Round in Dallas.
How was the Rams strength of schedule that year? The three other teams in their division were pretty bad so that is 6 guaranteed victories pretty much.
@@jerrywade6179 and they beat a Pittsburgh team that had already locked up their division and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. So that 10-3 victory was meaningless. Not convinced that the Rams would have even beat Minnesota if they had played

easily the most underrated rivalry in football...i'm pretty sure the 9 post season games between the two organizations is an NFL record, yet it rarely get's mentioned when discussing the all time great rivalries... i remember a couple years ago when the Rams and Cowboys had their playoff game in L.A, the media didn't mention anything about the history of their rivalry...perhaps they did, but i must of missed it

The Cowboys had figured out that the Rams played 3 different defenses on 3rd down determined by who they substituted into the game. Staubach said they waited to see who the Rams put in and called a play that would work against that defense or he called a play at the line of scrimmage. Not as hard to pick even a great defense apart when you have a good offense and know what the defense the other team is in before getting to the line. This was in Staubach's book, "Time Enough to Win"
and the following post season in Texas stadium, the Rams dictated the pace of the game, playing their style of football, which was a slug fest, grind out, power football...1976 marked the first of three post season losses at Texas stadium the Cowboys endured at the hands of Los Angeles Rams...those three post season wins in Texas stadium for the L.A Rams, are the most by any visiting team..

Dallas was so multi faceted with Roger: scrambling ability, arm strength and improvisation. In this game, Roger and the Cowboys stretched out a great Ram defense. Doomsday caved in the Rams O~ line. The Rams had no comeback ability at QB. It's like having a great team that can run the ball and play good defense without a Staubach, Stabler or Bradshaw. LA fans I'm glad you got the Rams back in their rightful city.
the L.A Rams of the 1970's were solid in every facet of the game, with the exception of the QB position...had they an elite QB in that era, i have no doubt they would have won multiple Super Bowls...
This game is a prime example of why Roger Staubach is one of the Top 5 QB's of all-time. Incredibly, the Rams defense only allowed 135 points in 14 games, yet Staubach's took this vaunted defense apart by demonstrating his wide variety of skills. Staubach had no flaws in his game, so it should come as no surprise that he retired as the NFL's all-time leader in passer rating. If Staubach played in today's game, he would put up insane numbers and he would routinely have the Cowboys in the Super Bowl hunt.
@@mgomez5606 Ah, what? Jerry Jones is an owner, not an offensive coordinator or head coach. @@mgomez5606 Underachieve? The documented record says otherwise. Jimmy left after the 1993 season, and despite the inclusion of the salary cap prior to the 1994 season, the Cowboys remained the most successful team in the NFL from 1994-1996. In that 3 year period, the Cowboys were 34-14 in the regular season, they won 3 consecutive NFC East titles, appeared in back to back NFC Championship Games, won 5 playoff games, and they became the 1st team in NFL history to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years. A big reason why they won Super Bowl 30 was the work done in free agency by Jerry Jones. The additions of Deion Sanders and Ray Donaldson helped the 1995 Cowboys bring another Lombardi Trophy back to Valley Ranch.
This was the game that pretty much broke my spirit as a Rams fan. I was 14, and I had been a devoted Rams fan since the days of Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow and Dick Bass. This seemed like it was finally the year the Rams had a complete enough team to win a championship. Then the Cowboys showed up with not even their best team in the last 5 years and completely took the Rams apart. I never cared quite as much about a professional sports team again after this game.

I came down with a horrible case of the stomach flu two days afterward and to this day I'll always blame it on this damn game. A dark day for us LA Ram fans.
Even darker days laid ahead for us young Cowboy fans in 1979 after Vince Ferragamo hit Billy Waddy over the middle to score the game winning TD with 2-minutes left in the game. That one hurt a lot.

Between this blow out and the one a few years later, the Cowboys have to hold the record for biggest back-to-back road blow outs in a conference title game.
That's wishful thinking. You cant do that now. Easy to keep players when you don't have free agency like you do today. The cowboys would have had to cut some players to keep Staubach and other starters paid.
While watching one of these games from I think the same season ('75), the narrator said that, that year's Steelers, had NO players on the roster for the game I was watching on RUclips, that had EVER played for another NFL team. Think about that for a moment-that's mind boggling. That's dedication, and a franchise that cares and promotes and rewards within. Rooney might have been the most benevolent owner of all time, in NFL history.
Man, the names. The memories. I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan but even the Rams! Lawrence McCutcheon! Brent McClanahan! It's crazy how muted the touchdown celebrations are. I wonder if even one player signalled they'd just made a first down. Ahhh...the good ol' days.
i am now 58 yrs old but i still have nightmares of being at this game and it was over in 2nd qtr. i was also from Thousand Oaks and had to watch the cowboys practice at CLU. A double whammy. That catch by Preston Pearson was great tho. Was in the EZ so i had a great view.
Vikings with Tarkington had been already using the screens to first Marinaro in 72 then Foreman in 73 pretty much a key to their success though obviously didnt work in the Super Bowls.
This same season, ('75) I saw in August, the annual LA Times exhibition game at the Colisseum, between the Cowboys (training camp in Thousand Oaks) and the Rams. This NFC Championship game slaughter was an embarrassment to a very good Ram team, that went 12-2, and included a victory over this season's eventual Super Bowl champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Yet one of those two regular season losses was to this same Cowboys team in the season opener, 18-7 (the other one was a shocking 24-23 loss to a bad 49ers team). So the Cowboys knew they could beat this Rams team, because they had already done it. The only shocking thing was the dimension of the Cowboys victory, not that they won.
In the season final the Steelers were 12-1 and had home field locked up, so they benched a lot of starters v the rams. LA needed to win that game because they were trying to catch Minnesota so they played to win. I remember that game because it was on a Saturday night, and it was the end of QB Joe Gilliams career after he played so poorly v the rams. Probably because he tooted up before the game and was high as a kite.
The 1975 season demonstrated why Roger Staubach was the greatest Cowboy QB of all-time and one of the top 5 QB's in NFL history. The Cowboys were coming off an 8-6 season and the roster contained 12 rookies, yet Staubach proved he could carry a team that wasn't experienced and/or loaded with talent. Meredith, White, and Romo were never able to carry talented or underachieving teams to the Super Bowl, and Aikman quickly became a JAG when the Cowboys lost players to retirement and free agency. Staubach put together an outstanding regular season, but he took it to another level in the 1975 post-season. The Hail Mary game against the Vikings, an awesome performance against the Rams, and he was throwing potential game winning passes into the end zone in the final seconds of Super Bowl 10. It's important to note that Staubach is the only QB in NFL history to face 3 playoff opponents who ranked Number 1 (e.g., Vikings), Number 2 (e.g., Rams), and Number 4 (e.g., Steelers) in total defense.
Yet another year where the Rams came up short. For the sake of LA, I hope the Rams finally win one. The 99 title went to StL. As of Dec 2018, the LOS ANGELES Rams haven't won a title since 1951.

I was watching (and screaming) that day in '75 when (now-) fellow HoFers Roger and Drew pulled off the miracle. I always wondered who ended up with the ball he threw into the stands. Too bad he didn't keep it; it would now also be in the HoF!
The Unsettled QB position kept the Rams out of the Super Bowl in the 1970's. Roman Gabriel. John Hadl. James Harris. Ron Jaworski. Pat Haden. Joe Namath. Haden again, then Vince Ferragamo, who actually put up a good account for himself in Super Bowl XIV, the year they finally broke through..
can't argue w/ that. Gabriel was pretty good in his prime, but far from a championship type QB -- The others were all past their prime or not very good except for James Harris, he had talent, but just didn't have the X factor, naw mean? Not a Rams fan, just love anything NFL from this era, late 60's mid 70's NFL.
Going further than that; it took almost 15 years for the Rams to get things stabilized at quarterback after Roman Gabriel departed (following Super Bowl XIV; Ferragamo started all but 1 game in '80; then after he left for Montreal Haden split time with Dan Pastorini; Ferragamo returned for '82 and split time with a washed-up Bert Jones. Vince started all of '83 and 3 games in '84 before breaking his hand, giving way to journeyman Jeff Kemp; who then gave way to CFL expatriate Dieter Brock in '85. Then in '86; there was a three-way battle between Steve Dils; an aging Steve Bartkowski and rookie Jim Everett. It wouldn't be until 1987 (when Everett beat out Dils) that the Rams finally settled on a quarterback long-term.
In the 70s, the Cowboys, Vikings and Rams dominated the NFC, similar to the way the Patriots, Steelers and a Peyton Manning led team has dominated the AFC the last 15 years.
IIRC, Preston Pearson was the only member of that Cowboys team that played for another NFL team. That was also the year that the Cowboys had the "Dirty Dozen" - 12 rookies made the team that year.
The Rams just didn't have it that day; I've always wondered how this would have played out if they would have run Ron Jaworski out of the tunnel as the starter instead of James Harris. Jaworski had a strong game only one week earlier in a win vs the Cards. Harris was still broken down, and he showed it early. I actually was THRILLED one week earlier when Dallas upset MN; it meant no trip to MN for my Rams. Two missed fg's on Jaworkski drives early really hurt. And the dropped passes. But Dallas was hot this day.
I remember Hollywood Henderson show boating in that game. Chuck Knox ran an unimaginative offense in those days. The failure of Carroll Rosenbloom to bring a star QB to LA was a waste of the great teams the Rams had in the 70’s.
remember richim1 there was NO FEEE AGENCY back in the 1970's !!!!!!!!!!!! imagine if there was free agency back in the 1970's carroll rosenbloom would do whatever it takes to win a championship and EVERY OWNER was scared of him !!!!!!!!!! how many consecutive years WOULD THE RAMS GO UNDEFEATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if he needs a QB he will get that QB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what hurt the rams is that they had an easy schedule which never helps when you play elite teams come playoff time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has nothing to do with loyalty, free agency happened, and removed part of the tyrannical power of the rich owners over the athletes, giving the players a bit more choice. Let me guess, you root for big pharma and billionaires over the workers too?
That diving end zone catch by Preston Pearson obviously hit the ground. But there was no replay back then and the Rams would've lost anyway. Great upload of a very disappointing game.
The Rams were so hyped by the media at the time in those 70s. Yes they were also so popular by the Hollywood scene as so many would go to see games at the Colosseum. This Ram team though was very good and should have been in the Super Bowl. They had more talent than any other team in the NFC that year.Except possibly Dallas and the Vikings. Great memories and real football back then.
There was a slight error in the commentary here. When the Cowboys beat Minnesota the week before on the Staubach to Pearson Hail Mary, they did not become the first wild card team to advance past the first round of the playoffs. In the 1972 playoffs, the wild card Cowboys rallied from a 28-13 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat San Francisco, 30-28 in the first round of the NFC playoffs. The 1971 Baltimore Colts were actually the first wild card to advance in the playoffs when they beat Cleveland, 20-3.
Doug Martin First I assumed you meant the Hail Mary, but after seeing Preston Pearson’s catch at 10:20, that’s the one, right? Definitely not a catch. Even so, it made no difference, Dallas incontestably the better team this day.

Ok, ok....fine. The Cowboys kicked our ass. In the immortal Coliseum nonetheless. Such a heartbreaking loss. Now, where is the video of Eric Dickerson’s 248 yards on the ground performance against The Cowboys.
The 73-79 Rams were a great team that lacked a QB that could get them over the hump. 1979 they did get to the SB with Vince Ferragamo but ran into the tail end of the Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty.
Harry Kalas said the 75 Cowboys were the first wildcard team to advance to the conference championship game. But the 72 Cowboys advanced to the NFC Championship game. Also the 71 Colts advanced to the AFC conference game
As a Cowboy fan, I was surprised by how easy they dispatched the Rams this day. I figured we'd used all our luck the previous week against the Vikings. QB issues and bad luck always plagued the Rams. What many forget is the Cowboys beat the Rams on opening day 18-7, with the Rams scoring with less than a minute to play to avoid the shutout. The Rams lost three games in 1975, two of them to Dallas.
That's what made the Cowboys-Rams rivalry such a great (and often forgotten) one from 1973-'85. They were evenly matched teams with different strengths and weaknesses. The strange thing was that, more often than not, when the Rams and Cowboys met in the playoffs, the VISITING team won. The Cowboys won both the 1975 and 1978 NFC Championship Games in Los Angeles, yet the Rams beat the Cowboys three of the five meetings in Dallas, including the shocking upset in the 1979 NFC Divisional Playoffs when Vince Ferragamo gave the Cowboys a taste of their own medicine. Overall, the teams met eight times in the playoffs from 1973-'85, and the visiting team won five of those eight games. The Cowboys won two of the three match-ups in Los Angeles and the Rams won three of the five meetings in Dallas.
Add that to the fact that it was Roger Staubach's final game. Despite putting up numbers that exceeded any that Staubach put up, Danny White never commanded the team quite the way Roger Staubach could, and that got exposed in those championship games. They were never close in the first (1980) and last (1982, when White got KO'd), and I don't think the 49ers ever pull the '81 NFC Championship Game out if Staubach, or someone similar was the QB, because either they put the game to a place where Montana's drive doesn't put them ahead, or they finish that final drive after "The Catch" to steal that game at the end, like Staubach's teams almost always did. And then, who comes to Dallas and beat the Cowboys in the '83 playoffs but Vince Ferragamo and the Rams. And while their running game put them in position, it was Ferragamo that produced the points in that playoff victory, as well, with 3 TD passes. While he wasn't particularly accurate in those two playoff wins in Dallas (9-for-21 in '79 and 15-for-30 in '83), Ferragamo hit the Cowboys with 6 TD passes, three in each stunning upset.
+cjs83172 Roger retired because he wanted to call more plays but Landry wouldn't allow it. Danny was his pet project to prove that his system not Roger wins.
....the Los Angeles Rams have an all time record of 15-12 against Dallas ( not counting the St Louis years)...the L.A Rams are also the only organization in history to beat Dallas 3 times at Texas Stadium in the post season (1976, 79 & 83)...and Dallas' 5 post season losses against the L.A Rams are the most the Cowboys have against any organization...
As a kid i thought Pearson's td at the end of the half was a great catch but looking at it now i would have to say it should have been ruled incomplete. The ball goes through his hands and hits the ground. Even for rules of the day its a stretch to rule it a td.
Harry Kalas said Dallas was the first Wild Card team to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. Nope. The same Cowboys did in 1972 and the Colts did in 1971. They just became the first Wild Card team to advance to the Super Bowl since the term "Wild Card" was used in NFL playoff vernacular.
Kallas was wrong when he said that the Cowboys were the first Wildcard team to advance beyond the 1st round of the playoffs, which in those days was the divisional playoffs. In 1971, the Colts beat the Browns in the divisional playoff game before being eliminated by the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Championship game.
Back then both conference games were game of the week. One during the open week and the other on the weekend of the Super Bowl. So the Raiders-Steelers game was also shown that year.
Rams were one of the best teams and organizations of the seventies,But, couldn't beat the Vikings and nor the Cowboys, I agree, never had a real qb, they gave up on Jaworkski way too early and got way to little in the trade for him

Great 75 season season even losing to the Steelers in the SB didn't hit me that hard because the Cowboys shouldn't have even been there to begin with per everyone, but they played them down to the wire.
They kept winning and made the playoffs till 1985, more than just a few years.
I was 12 years old and was heartbroken by this lost by my Rams, really thought this was the year 💔 😪
The Cowboys kicked their butts in week one, as well - 18-7, holding the Rams to 20 yards passing.

I haven't watched them play since 2012.

Man I got spoiled watching the cowboys in the 70s sad what they have become!!!Also I think this is best game the cowboys ever played.
Vikes were 12-2 also.
So the Rams lost only once that year not to Dallas.
How was the Rams strength of schedule that year? The three other teams in their division were pretty bad so that is 6 guaranteed victories pretty much.
@@nuffsaid783 5-1 lost by 1 to SF. 7-1against everyone else.
@@jerrywade6179 and they beat a Pittsburgh team that had already locked up their division and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. So that 10-3 victory was meaningless. Not convinced that the Rams would have even beat Minnesota if they had played

Preston Pearson clearly trapped the ball on that touchdown but no instant replay back then. 🏈
Yeah, bummer! Then the Cowboys would only have hung 30 or 33 points on the Rams! The Rams wuz robbed!!! ROFLMAO!
Not true. He had his hands underneath the ball and then cradled it in his arms. I’ve seen that play played in slo-mo.

I noticed that
I remember watching this game from my home in Dallas...it was great!!!!
10:14 Staubach to Preston Pearson was not a touchdown catch. But back in the day with no replay it was a remarkable catch. How times change.
Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it goes your opponent's way. Evens out anyway.
Butch Johnson's catch in XII was even a worse "catch"

cowboys vs rams was a very good rivalry in the 70's early 80's
They had to. Then-Cowboys President & General Manager Tex Schramm had previously worked with the Rams. www.profootballhof.com/players/tex-schramm/biography/
easily the most underrated rivalry in football...i'm pretty sure the 9 post season games between the two organizations is an NFL record, yet it rarely get's mentioned when discussing the all time great rivalries... i remember a couple years ago when the Rams and Cowboys had their playoff game in L.A, the media didn't mention anything about the history of their rivalry...perhaps they did, but i must of missed it

@@bconni2 true, but do not forget the rams versus the vikings too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
L.A Ram had the prettiest chearleader in 1970s
Very interesting. Never heard that before.

The first time a wild card ever made it to the SB...
This seemed like it was finally the year the Rams had a complete enough team to win a championship. Then the Cowboys showed up with not even their best team in the last 5 years and completely took the Rams apart. I never cared quite as much about a professional sports team again after this game.

Between this blow out and the one a few years later, the Cowboys have to hold the record for biggest back-to-back road blow outs in a conference title game.
P.Person was the only player not drafted by the boys. That is how you build championship then and now.
Preston played for Colts in SBV
...And Steelers in SB IX.
That's wishful thinking. You cant do that now. Easy to keep players when you don't have free agency like you do today. The cowboys would have had to cut some players to keep Staubach and other starters paid.
@Joey COCO Preston was the only player on the roster that had played for another team.
It really was "all about team" back then.
I will say it was easier back then. No free agency. The team stayed the team for years.

Is it reasonable to say that, by the mid-70s, the screen pass had become to Tom Landry what the power sweep had been to Vince Lombardi?
Excellent observation! That screen pass totally devastated teams. They knew it was coming, especially on 3rd down, and rarely stopped it.
@@spryfolII yeah... #26 P r e s t o n Pearson
Vikings with Tarkington had been already using the screens to first Marinaro in 72 then Foreman in 73 pretty much a key to their success though obviously didnt work in the Super Bowls.
The Rams were in it right up until the coin flip! What a shellacking!!
Rams got a bit of revenge next yr(1976) when the beat the cowboys in dallas in the divisional playoff rd.

Roger Staubach is my all-time favorite nfl player by far.🤟
They were the first to advance to the S.B.
I thought the Cowboys could win, but never expected this domination.
Pearson's great TD catch would have been reversed quickly if they were playing today's Patriots.
Doug Martin First I assumed you meant the Hail Mary, but after seeing Preston Pearson’s catch at 10:20, that’s the one, right? Definitely not a catch. Even so, it made no difference, Dallas incontestably the better team this day.

They got their revenge in the playoffs the next year. Ugh.
+cjs83172 I really think the Ferragamo pass was more damaging to the Cowboys psyche than Montana's.
Ron Jaworski nearly got his lights punched out. Harvey Martin smashes Lawrence McCutcheon.
hoping for a repeat tomorrow...
Beautiful catch by Preston Pearson at 10:08. You don't see guys laying them selves out for a catch like that anymore.
CousinSinister not a catch...
This game was over at the half, and everyone knew it. The Rams just didn't have the explosive passing attack to overcome a huge deficit..
....the Los Angeles Rams have an all time record of 15-12 against Dallas ( not counting the St Louis years)...the L.A Rams are also the only organization in history to beat Dallas 3 times at Texas Stadium in the post season (1976, 79 & 83)...and Dallas' 5 post season losses against the L.A Rams are the most the Cowboys have against any organization...
You think 37-7 is bad,I point you to 1940 nfl championship game @Washington Griffith stadium.
Chicago Bears- 73
Wash Redskins - 0
Preston Pearson had a field day
THE FIELD HELPED HIM ON THE TD AT 10:03, HE TRAPPED THE BALL, SHOULD HAVE BEEN NO TD
Yep, I cringe every time I see that on the NFL films. The Butch Johnson Super Bowl Catch too. Rams still got that azz beat anyway
Clabon Pleasant
true
, Preston still had a very good day anyway
Did Preston trap that pass at 13:05 ?
Yep lol
As a kid i thought Pearson's td at the end of the half was a great catch but looking at it now i would have to say it should have been ruled incomplete. The ball goes through his hands and hits the ground. Even for rules of the day its a stretch to rule it a td.
He did the best he could, but it was incomplete because it hit the ground. Missed call.
The Cowboys and Vikings dominated the NFC Championships in the 70s.
Kyle Standerfer so was Kansas City. They were technically a wild card because Oakland won the division the year they beat Minnesota in SB 4.
I'm not sure they used the term "Wild Card" before 1970
Watching these old videos reveals all the horse collar tackles, late hits and face masks penalties.
I remember that game.
Mr Clutch Captain America enough said
The best greatest team of the 1970s other than that other team who shall not be mentioned

Cowboys RAMPARTS!! Just like this past Thursday when the COWBOYS stuffed the Brees led SAINTS!!
HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS
Harvey Martin was a beast!
This was the game of the week??!!! Just proves how the NFL favored the Cowboys
Back then both conference games were game of the week. One during the open week and the other on the weekend of the Super Bowl. So the Raiders-Steelers game was also shown that year.
Rams were one of the best teams and organizations of the seventies,But, couldn't beat the Vikings and nor the Cowboys, I agree, never had a real qb, they gave up on Jaworkski way too early and got way to little in the trade for him
Kenneth Collins 7
Two great QBs played that day Captain Clutch and the Polish rifle. Roger has the better team but Ron was one hell of a QB.
Preston Pearson
The ball touches the ground.
