We were doing a few gigs down in Mexico sometime in 1986 and we were having a kick-about in the carpark before we went on. It was me, Morrisey, the roadies, you know. Anyway, this bloke comes over from the football stadium across the road. "Alright lads," he goes, "West Germany are stuck in traffic. Fancy playing the Argentinians for a bit until they get here?" We had a bit of time so we said, "Alright, might as well." In the end, we played the full 90 minutes. I scored with a this overhead scissor kick and Morrisey saved an equaliser with a decent scorpion kick. We ended up winning the final of the World Cup, and then went and did that night's gig. So that was nice.
Is it possible that Madonna was still working in coat check five months after her debut album came out and three months after Lucky Star was released? I think there is some confusion here.
That is not typically how it works. I don't know what her contract was like but my guess is that she would have been given a pretty good advance and by this point doing a ton of promotion for the album. She did American Bandstand and Solid Gold one Month later. Also, at the end of 1983 she was in Spokane filming the movie Vision Quest.
sirlordford No. All you have to do is read the biographies and autobiographies of many famous musicians. A lot of them went through poverty at the beginning despite having chart success. I remember reading about Billy Corgan (lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins) and how he had to sleep on the concrete floor of their rehearsal space in some old building in Chicago. Meanwhile they had a huge album, Siamese Dream, and were about to start a world tour. No money was coming in, at least to the band. That's just one example, one of the largest rock bands of all time. Things change quickly though.
No what? Are you so sure from your time in the music business? Billy Corgan is irrelevant and probably not the most reliable in avoiding hyperbole. I still think it's unlikely she was still working as a coat check at that point. Nevermind, I just read a Spin article where they say the same damn thing I'm saying. I'll let you bathe in your speculation alone now.
It might sound weird to have Madonna opening for the Smiths but put it into context: they both had the same audience of misfits and gays and it makes perfect sense.
Met this bell-end once in the Gun pub, Coldharbour. We sat down opposite him (he was hammered) and all he did was bang-on about how good a guitarist he was. Didn't have a clue who he was. Don't think he was too impressed when I said:" thanks for the info mate, but who are you?". The lad he was with pointed out who he was
@elajiera Her gender doesn't really come into for me, she lacks the vocal skills of the great female performers, she has never had the range of a Billie Halliday or an Aretha Franklin. nor the originality of Grace Jones. the vast majority of her work was producer based and peaked during the William Orbit period with Ray Of Light, possibly the best album she has released to date. I do like the fact that she helped empower women but cheapened it a little by some unfortunate phases.
What she lacks in vocal ability she makes up with balls.Taking risks that no one was willing to take apart from her.And she still makes amazing albums.Madame X is just the latest.
@Goldie4tv they split up???? dont need to knock the smiths they have a great part in music history, especially in england.Madonna...... great if you like that type of thing? but aint for me.Johnny is a guitar genius, madonna dyes her hair and re-invents herself lol??? my arse.
Madonna in the 80's was actually awesome and believe it or not it is okay to like Madonna and The Smiths.
it's not ok to like the smiths. :)
@@mj.l If you have no taste.
@@mj.l They should be loved.
@@mj.l instead it is obligatory to adore The Smiths
I think both Morrissey and Madonna are the most influential lyricists of the 80's.
Wow!, I never knew this story. The cloakroom attendant doing a cheeky gig after finishing her shift. Sounds surreal now.

lol
Thanks for posting these interviews - really enjoying ☺️👍...
True. Madonna also opened for then R&B teen group New Edition.
And so Madonna should open for the Smiths. A fair to average talent opening for a dynamic epoch making band....sounds right.
Both are great, Shutup and stop comparing. No one can ever say just nice things about hard working artists
@Jordan 87
Nope, because that's boring as f
Whats with the background music, feel like i'm in countdown,
You have the funniest stories johnny👍
Morrisey hates her.....
They're my two Favorite.
I heard big mouth is about her

To be fair, 80's Madonna opened up for everybody.

Tho not Nile Rodgers he would have us believe ( despite his appropriate surname! 😂)
BOOOOOOO!!!
slish slish boom boom!!
😂
her first album came out in '83 and she released "like a virgin" in '84, so i would think she'd moved beyond coat check girl at this point.
Ppl don't get get instant fame/success/money when they release an album.
You don’t know the music business, then. Money is a,ways in the pipeline...and takes forever to arrive.
Madonna never worked at Danceteria. She was the coat check girl at The Russian Tea Room in 1979 and not for very long.
I am on the record for Marrs sounding as good as Morrissey as long as Morrissey isn't in the room.🎙
At that time, it's quite possible Jean Michel Basquiat was also in attendance..
Is it possible that Madonna was still working in coat check five months after her debut album came out and three months after Lucky Star was released? I think there is some confusion here.
Madonna is, was and always will be a money hungry whore, so yeah.
Sounds about right. Artists usually have to wait before the cash starts to flow, even when they're really popular.

The fast shows hilarious.
oh, you got it. wonderful.
I bet that took many counselling sessions to get over Messers Marr/Morrissey/Rourke/Joyce.
Very cool
Brilliant.
He's just relating an experience, chill out.
There's a story of Metallica opening for Ozzy Osbourne, then Ozzy getting booed off for more Metallica.
@Lynleyland - No, I'm not - I've been in this business and I've seen how it works - The Pretenders, Gary Numan - it was all fixed, mate.
i thought he was gonna say about when she played the hacienda
It might sound weird to have Madonna opening for the Smiths but put it into context: they both had the same audience of misfits and gays and it makes perfect sense.
pretty sure this was also the concert where Moz fell off the stage lol
I think that was the gig. Morrissey later said that he was "terribly embarrassed" about it in an interview.
Cool story mate
I remember Madonna , she tried to best the lead guitarist from men at work at a guitar solo circa 1983 .
Men Without Hats > Men at Work
@xenoblar Lucky boy!
I guess its true, Madonna has the best fans...well, at least that night she did.
He feels like the guy from which show?
MASTER
Moz:"So, Mad, you gonna love me?"
Mad:"No, I'm like a virgin."
uno de los mejores guitarristas de la historia pendejos

Lucky Madonna
At first I thought the title said Maradona.
That would've been insane and amazing to watch!!!
@Rikk303
Very lucky!
Which was nice! 😅😅😅
Madonna is my favorite artist of all time. I also love The Smiths. Madonna has hit after hit after hit after hit..
That she didn't write
@@joanofarc708 is there a point you're attempting to make?
Fact: Johnny Marr quit The Smiths because he was miserable and he wasn't enjoying it anymore. That's it. Nothing more.
Why's he lying about his age? He was 20.

You do realise Johnny Marr doesn't drink ? If you are going to make up stories, i'd try making up ones with a basis in reality.
Marr definitely used to drink and wasn't always a teetotaler. He's spoken of it frequently.
@ samuel lmao cant give u enough thumbs
hi
Cool Story Bro. Could have done without the stupid chanel B filler
You're a lovely bloke, Johnny but no way you can convince me you apreciate Madonna's music.
