I will never forget watching the tv as events unfurled. Some things were shown on tv that were uncensored, only to be censored for later viewing. A friend of mine was a Royal Marine at the time and was there. When it felt appropriate, I would chat with him about his experiences. He was fairly open with me. While at work, on assignment, we had occasion to spend a few nights in an hotel. He had a disturbed sleep. Fourteen to fifteen years after the War, he had dreams about it and probably still does. He was shouting 'Take cover! Incoming!' and 'Grenade!' in his sleep and didn't recall it in the morning. I mentioned it to his wife and she said it often happened.
I only hope that ex-Serviceman get more help now than they did in the past.
Well done Gentleman of all Services.
I'll not name my brave friend, but anyone that knows me well, will know him.

I do think that is a little unfair. War is War and the chance of you getting killed exists whichever War you are in. It is difficult to compare Wars following the Great War as tactics changed (fortunately).
My friend said that he literally shit himself when he first came under fire in the Falklands. I'm sure that he is still suffering now.
Read Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger a WW1 German soldier. Try to get an early translation (mine is from 1929) as later versions were sanitised. It is the best book that I have read regarding the conditions the soldiers lived and died in.

I think this account by British veteran Tony Banks sums up just how bloody this war was:
"The Falklands War was short, sharp and very nasty. The fighting I experienced as a young soldier in the Parachute Regiment was, at times like something out of World War I. We fought at close quarters, clearing trenches of Argentinian troops with bayonets and grenades.
I saw close friends killed and mutilated, crying for their mothers as the life ebbed from them. I witnessed wounded and badly burned men writhing, screaming in agony.
But I was a Para - a tough guy in one of the toughest units in the British Army - and all that death and destruction did not bother me. Or so I thought."

I personally know a former member of the Parachute regiment that served as a teenager during the conflict, to this day he still bears the scars of that war as do many from both sides, he now is in his mid 50's and will go to his grave with the ghosts hunting him to his last breath.

One bomb hit the flight deck, detonating a depth charge and starting a fire, one went straight through her funnel and two more destroyed her Limbo anti-submarine mortar.,, All of the bombs failed to explode. Five men were injured in the attack.." many young men were then able to grow up into adults, return to their families embrace ... have families of their own and even grow old, thus with the passing of time unlike some of those comrades who weren't so blessed...who didn't dodge a bullet became... names were carved onto cold marble blocks ...

They also tried to hit British warships because it would have been more "macho" to sink a warship than a troop carrier. When in reality the troop carriers were the more important targets!

Brits were smart enough to learn from our (USA) Bay of Pigs debacle by taking out Argentine Pucara ground attack planes before the invasion so they couldn't stymie an invasion of the Falklands the way Cuba's air force spoiled ours. Also, I'm told by co-workers from Argentina who were there at the time that US reconnaissance informed Brits of some of the Argentine troops' locations and numbers. Argentine A4's had few if any range-extending external fuel tanks which limited their effectiveness--and we (USA), allied with the Brits, were not about to give them any. Even so, an amazingly good job by the Brits with fairly limited resources over an incredibly long distance (supply line). Much respect from USA.

The Spanish resent you traitors, you inherit only your language from proud Spain.

Britain has not been an empire for 50 years. Catch up!!! You should end your imperial desires to annex The Falklands!
"Al democratic goverments of argentine did claim and still claim for this islands in UN."
You only started to claim the islands in 1941. The UN holds the self determination of the islanders in much higher regard than Argentina's imperial territorial desires!
"British military should think for a second what a heck were they doing 13300 km from home befor critizace argentinians"
The British military and its people knew exactly what we were doing in the South Atlantic. We were removing a cowardly and brutal foreign junta from the islands that have been ours for centuries. Loyal subjects of the crown were under attack and were being oppressed by your foul junta and we had to remove you from the islands. We pretty much had global support. Only a few abstained and even fewer supported Argentina's cowardly surprise invasion! We met our objectives within a matter of months.

    • @francoandres3850
      @francoandres3850 5 лет назад +1

It's not that they didn't have defenses, but circumstances, crew and system failure proved to be deadly. In one instance the SAM system wouldn't load, and since it was a fairly new system the crew wasn't familiar with how it worked. In another instance, another ship from the task force got between the launchers and the enemy attack planes, preventing it from launch. The fact the Argentine planes were flying too close to the ground proved to be another problem since radars couldn't pick up their signatures. Don't try to discredit the bravery of the Argentine Air Force and Navy by saying you lacked defense systems. Our planes lacked everything, from flares, to missiles, to radars, fuel and supersonic speeds yet they still managed to get the job done by being used in new, mortally unconventional ways.

The Argentinian "Junta" in charge of the country were Military despots who were used to treating their civilians with contempt, and thought they could do the same with the British Military. And that was THEIR demise, because their attempt to divert the attention of Argentinians with a defense of the country, turned into the end of the haphazard adventure into governing. They had kept the regular army in the mainland to repress their own people, and had sent conscripts with no experience to the Faulkland islands. That was their defeat, and after the battle was lost, their regime collapsed. That was the silver lining of the mess.

It was certainly eye opening for them. They had doubted British resolve since Suez.
The Iron Lady sure changed that.

Chile beams in South America!! (for good, not for what Argentina would...) and not only with flashes but with a big light which rises us on top of the Andes, by the way, the Union Jack is seen from here, and I can see it waves beautifully, as much as my Chilean flag waves over the continent!!!!!!!! I'm so proud of my country, of my people, of my friends overseas, they all know what we are made of, the courage and bravery of our ancestors, nobody has defeated us ever.

It was true the british forces were better trained for combat but the argentine fought well under the circumstances and with some logistics failures, however their air force pilots performed bravely, those were fearless men under enemy fire. Rip all those who lost their life.

+MrSixiesRock FUCKING ENGLISH generation boats, sunk by the Argentina Air Force. And more than 50 aircraft shot down ??? The English government is afraid to tell the truth?
Without the help of NATO and the UN any child anything, cowards.
PS: Find out what your government hides Until 2072 all the casualties they suffered in combat, even unwilling to admit his inferiority in combat Wide.
The funniest thing is that we just leave them ships, planes, helicopters and return to island Do pathetic .... And suffer 255 casualties throughout the war and Jajajajajaja They believe the what. Only by adding the casualties suffered by England in their boats sum of 800 dead ... As more who died on land and air Easy they suffered the low of 1029 characters and 2000 wounded.
They surrendered 11,000? That's silly. Two battalions surrendered due to the lack of link officers had an official sub. With that comment of surrender, clearly he knew you had no fucking idea what you're saying. Because they were well trained? with that justifies nothing.
His soldiers were so well premiered in a dirty attempt to harass the Argentina "Admiral Hermes Quijada" Naval Base. Concluded with a Sea King helicopter English burned in Punta Arenas, Chile.
They were so well trained that he could not land in Rio Grande with the submarine HMS Onyx and were repelled by the destroyer ARA Bouchard. A few days later, another failure with another Sea King.
They were so well trained that the first landing was a big strategic failure. Ended with the result of the sinking of HMS Ardent, and the breaking of ships HMS Argonaut, HMS Broadsword, HMS Plymouth, HMS Antrim, HMS Brilliant. Two Harrier aircraft destroyed four helicopters destroyed. It is said that at least May 21 had at least 300 dead. Ovbiamente said his country will miraculously died only 20 LOL
They were so well trained that his sailors with boats of last generation, could not practically nothing against the old planes that had Argentina. At lower levels, Argentina dominated the skies. Britain could never find a Hercules refueling aircraft.
They were so well trained that destroys a submarine Argentino English.
And there are many more things that I have no desire to.
And you say that miraculously got 255 dead, because they are well trained. You are a broken face. Clearly that is not justified as a
obtained only 255. It is a lie, invented his government. You can not defend the indefensible.
PS: Half of Argentine casualties are the ARA General Belgrano, with 323 of their dead crew. It was cowardly sunk by his country, as he retreated from outside the contest area established. You realize, losses can have a boat hit by a bomb? His shameful believe their country got only 255 are actually dead when more than 1,000 dead and 2,000 wounded English.

I'm not even going to bother reading all that crap you posted, But argentina lost because their military was not match for the mighty British forces. Suck it up and admit you got your ass handed to you. Even from a country that was so far away, They still managed to kick your ass.Argentina pais blanco y ario de latinoamerica.
