outside of playing washington (ranked #9 going into the season), msu's schedule is pretty interchangeable w/ UM's so how is msu's the 2nd hardest while UM's is full of cupcakes?
This schedule is harder than everyone thinks it is. I think 6-6/7-5 is acceptable as long as the losses are competitive and the team looks much better than last year. 8-4 or 9-3 should get him coach of the year. They will face 6 Top 25 teams this fall and have a preseason win total of 4.5. Also, Penn State is not unbeatable, every game except the Ohio State game Michigan has a small chance of winning. As long as Mel Tucker competes and beats a Top 25 team while going bowling, he is building toward something better.
My question; what is this team identity? What type of team are they trying to be? Run first, win with defense? Air it out and outscore opponents? What exactly is Mel Tucker trying to build up there, because every year this team has been very different from the last.
I think 6 wins is about where the program is at, coming from a UM fan what I always ask for any team is where and how did you get better from the season prior? I dont see where they have gotten better so much so it gets you three more wins, Realistically I think the roster on defense is just not good enough to endure the season.
This is fair. Kim may be an upgrade at QB but that schedule is brutal. Personally, if they win 6 or 7 and don't get embarrassed in a few of the games, I may give them some leeway.
the tale tale sign for me will be when the defense is on the field and the opponent is on a 3rd and 5. and if I see the db's looking around as if they don't know who is covering who. it will be a long year.
Valenti has said numerous times on this very show over the years that MSU is historically a 6 win program. If you take out 5 years of Dantonio from 2010-15, that is largely true. So 6-6 with a bowl birth is acceptable.
@@Bradley94belletire as mike/rico often point out, since the $ came from fanatical billionaire donors, it "doesn't count" when determining mel's performance vs pay. that said, mike has backed off that position lately, since the indiana loss.
@@DB-xp9px that is true. What I want to see is competitive vs Ohio State. Let’s face it, we haven’t been competitive with OSU at ALL lately. That’s not acceptable. Losing to teams like Minnesota, Maryland, Iowa, and Indiana will not be tolerated. Washington and Penn State, I get it. But if they get torched by WSH early like last year, I’ll be disappointed severly
Historically that’s fair but the bar moves when you get paid what Tucker is paid. You don’t make elite coach money to go 6-6. You can hire a lot of coaches for substantially less money to go 6-6. You pay that level of money to outperform historical averages so if you factor context you can get by with 8+. Similar to a Kirk’s Ferentz who makes around $7M or so but consistently wins 8+ games a year.
I honestly just have a hard time seeing 8 wins on the schedule. OSU, PSU, Michigan, Washington are auto-losses and I think its a lot to ask for them to win the other 8. I love Mel and like Michigan State (not an MSU fan, but I like them) but I just think 6-6 is realistic
thank you mike! i’ve been saying 8 wins has to be the number to hit and potentially win 1 of the 4 gauntlets. the money given to him has to result in developing his recruits and laying out a more quality coaching plan week in and week out
Our OL, DL and DB's should be improved since last season. Reed has move on and it's Mosley's time. Thorne is gone. I believe kim will be ok if the OL can protect him. They have to beat Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State and Washington.
8 wins is the bar. One of the highest paid coaches in America and with the way schedules are now a days, anything less than that would be unacceptable for me. Agree with the the guys, MSU needs to win some games we aren’t expected to win this year as well
8 would be good. I think the clearest path there would be the 8 outside of Washington, PSU, OSU, or UM. Even out of those 4 (where they will probably be at least 7 pt underdogs) I'd say they have a shot against anyone but OSU.
Acceptable would be a decent defense, no game management problems, a resolution to our kicking problems, and at least 7-5. Happy would be 9-3 or higher with a win over U of M or Ohio State. Overall, if the offense takes a step back after losing Coleman, I can accept it. But the defense has to be better or Hazelton has to be gone and Tucker's seat should be beating up.
I have no idea where 6 wins are at on their schedule. Anyone saying that is just wishful thinking. They will likely go 5-7 or worse. The team this year is worse than the team that just went 5-7.
Mike, you are being reasonably fair by saying that you are paid for the games you are not supposed to win. You were critical of Jim harbaugh when he was winning 9 or 10 games and was one of the highest paid coaches. But why are the “mission statements” different? Isn’t this difference of expectation the thing that was your evidence of the UM fan base being arrogant!?
7 wins with more competitive games against Washington, Penn State, Michigan, & Ohio State. Are we "suppose" to win at Iowa? I don't think so this year but it will take that or another upset win to reach 7 wins.
I just wish we had even one reason to believe the defense will be better. When a Power 5 school has a bottom-ranked defense, usually someone gets fired, or at least gets moved around. There has been no sense of urgency about it for two years, and worse Tuck would spend each press conference blaming it on the players. One game can be because of missed routes, not two seasons. As a Spartan fan, I’ll accept 7 wins. I’ll even count 6-6 plus a bowl win as acceptable 7 wins. Mike is correct in that we need to see them be competitive on the field. Going down by 21 in the 2nd quarter and never coming back is just not acceptable. 6-6 where you lose to good teams 28-23 is way better than 6-6 and losing games 54-3.

Rivalry standpoint, msu usually play Michigan good no matter how their season is going.
strange psychology the msu fanbase has......osu is "unbeatable" cuz they have crushed msu the last few years yet UM can be beat no matter we crushed the suckeyes shortly after they face-planted msu. i guess msu fans want it both ways lol
Especially when msu beat Michigan with Walker and the team choked yeah that's a failure big time
They'll stink on the field...they're better after the game with a little 8 on 1
From perspective of a wolverine you got major problems acceptable get rid of your high paid coach
Sorry they are going 3-9 4-8 at best
I bet you be lucky you get 6 wins
Valenti seems to be more concerned with violence against Michigan fans at Spartan Stadium than the actual football program. The afternoon Sparty Clown Show at its worst.
Then stop watching..? 🤡
then Watch Ann Arbor Cult Bias news you Onix.
@@anthonyminauro So you are ok with the Sparty afternoon radio hour advocating violence....typical Sparty.
MSU isnt beating UofM.
You guys are stuck in the Dantonio years thinking that.
Just because its a night game doesn't make up 20 points for you. UofM has a veteran team. Michigan by two tuddies.
Tucker has a winning record against um
@@sles3332 yea, u're right, msu should be favored by at least 7 this year against UM 🤔
Tucker took over a disaster! his recruits are freshman and sophomores. with the second hardest schedule in football. So you expect a disaster to go 8 and 4 in two years. B. S.
outside of playing washington (ranked #9 going into the season), msu's schedule is pretty interchangeable w/ UM's so how is it msu has the "2nd hardest schedule in football" and UM is playing a cupcake schedule?
Can't wait for state to ruins ums season
Barely beat Wisconsin got lucky Illinois that team is bottom grub
W, W, L, L,L, W, L, we'll see, we'll see, l, w, L...
MSU doesn't care about it's fanbase
