I'm heading back to the Mojave and deep into the weeds of Fallout New Vegas to make my very own Sunset Sarsaparilla. This episode owes a lot of credit to @GlenAndFriendsCooking, his work on homemade root beer, sarsaparilla and ginger bug were huge influences on this one, so thank you Glen!
So diving into this one, I wanted to think about what would make "Sunset Sarsaparilla" unique and different from simply standard Sarsaparilla. Fallout Lore tells us that Sunset got started in 1919, the same year as A&W Rootbeer, which makes it frankly, old. That's right up there with some of the oldest bottled soft drinks around. Moxie is another very old soft drink, deriving it's primary flavor from gentian, so thinking about the tastes in the market place at the time, maybe Sunset Sarsaparilla has a tinge of gentian in its recipe, so that's what I've done here. With or without my slight modifications, this recipe will yield an absolutely delicious sarsaparilla syrup recipe, which you can then mix with club soda to create a force carbonated soft drink, or you can ferment in bottles to create a naturally fermented beverage that would have been common in the days of the saloon.
Sunset Sarsaparilla Syrup
All by weights, not volume:
40 g. or 1.4 oz. Sassafras Root
15 g. or .5 oz. Sarsaparilla Root
5 g. or .2 oz. cinnamon stick
10 g. or .35 oz. licorice root
1 g. or .04 oz. gentian root
450 g. or 16 oz. demerara sugar
1000 g. or 35.26 oz. water
boil till water is dissolved
let steep 10-20 minutes
cool & strain & bottle
Fermented Sunset Sarsaparilla
1 part Syrup
3 parts water
2.5 oz. or 75 ml. per 2 liters of batch
mix thoroughly
add 3 drops acid phosphate per bottle
bottle & cap
let ferment at room temperature as desired
arrest fermentation by refrigeration
Ginger bug
approx. 50 g. or 1.75 oz. chopped ginger
top with water
3 or 4 tablespoons sugar
mix thoroughly
leave at room temperature to ferment
add sugar & ginger daily for a week
arrest fermentation by refrigeration
Forced Carbonated Sunset Sarsaparilla
1 part syrup
3 parts club soda

I forced my fallout character to drink 50 sarsaparillas in one sitting and he didn’t suffer any sort of organ damage.
I forced my fallout character to fight man sized mutant animals, bandits higher than jesus, roman LARPers wearing modified football gear, an army of catchpoles, 200+ year old narcissistic billionaire businessman's robots and he's doing fine. Not to mention how he got shot in the head before i even touched him. So i suppose your average soft drink with possibly dangerous ingredients don't have the same effect with him.

Welcome to the Mojave. It's like the Hotel (New) California. You can enter, but you can never leave!
Go for being a stealthy pistoleer, but before that, get good at repair. 5.56 mm rounds are fairly common, so you might want use That Gun fairly regularly in the base game. Any ammo you can't immediately use can just be taken apart and used to craft different ammo, depending on the parts you can get from other bullets or even currencies if you decide to use a shotgun, which is also a perfectly viable weapon. Repairing things is a good way to free up inventory space as well, since items in better condition sell for substantially more caps, which don't have any weight to them. Really you could make this as alcoholic as you'd want. Wine or champagne typically is back sweetened ( I say typically, but i'd assume expensive wine has their recipe and aging time down to an exact science). Anyhow most of the wine or mead I make typically rounds out at 14-16% after about a month, sometimes a litlte more. But after that if you kill off the remaining yeast, with some sweetness from the natural sugars or honey. Or if you fermented out all the sugar making it a very dry wine you can always back-sweeten it.
It just depends on the type of yeast you use, and the time it'll take for all the sugars to be eaten, or at least until you're happy with the alcohol percentage. So ginger root may just not allow you to get very high alcohol content just like wheat, barley average out to typically low yields. But you could always start with the ginger root, get maybe 1.5-2% out of it, and throw in some brewing yeast, depending on what you buy, you could be anywhere from 5-15% and stop there. Or maybe just use the brewing yeast, chop up the ginger root and other flavorings, and let them steep after you brewed everything. That'd be back-sweetening or back-flavoring, which is a nice way to lay out the alcohol content you want with a decent base, then really develop the flavor you're looking for, just takes longer.

Out of all your recipes that I need to try, this is number one. I love Fallout and I love root beers and sarsaparilla. Thanks for this.
nice job man; the amount of knowledge and information you put in the video is just beautiful
Don't lie! You just wanted to talk in the Old time western voice was the 2nd reason for making this drink
*Opens the bottle* Nice hiss. Let's get this Sarsaparilla out into a cup, Nice!
Ah yes, the mre guy
Isn’t it that guy who eats really old war rations ?
Adam Elafifi yes
You did great 👍🏾 I was throughly impressed especially when it looked like a sunset in your b-roll and I’m going to try this out!
I listen to this guy while doing homework and he helps me focus. His voice is very calming. THANK YOU
Instead of popping open one of your glass bottles to test carbonation, replace one glass bottle with a plastic bottle of the same volume with a secure fitting lid. You can determine carbonation by squeezing the plastic bottle. When it's a firm squeeze, pop it open to taste it. If it's good, put the glass bottles in the fridge, if not give them another day and start testing normally. Should save you some brew. Over time, you'll get better at judging the firmness of the plastic bottle. Cheers!
That's an interesting idea. I never thought of that, but I can definitely see it working.
Just don’t screw it up or you made a bit of shrapnel
@@Josh-hh2cu Yeah...Bottle bombs really suck. It's honestly the reason I switched to the plastic bottle method. First few batches I chickened out and opened it way too early but since then I've got it tuned in. I haven't had another mishap since switching to this method. I can't even take credit for it since I saw it on a brewing blog years ago.

I feel like second to New Vegas, Far Harbor is the best 3d fallout game. Even though it's a dlc, it's basically one massive love letter to Steven King and it works really well. I genuinly believed that with a few tweaks, it could have released as it's own stand-alone game.
What about Fallout: The Frontier?
@@FluffySylveonBoi lol no
Festus impression on point I'm very very impressed and your video was phenomenal!!!
Your nonalcoholic episodes are just as good as your normal ones, please keep doing what you're interested in first! Don't pigeonhole yourself!
“ *Organ Rupture* and halitosis” ah yes, classic consequences of too much soda
Anim8 dis boi I love that the side effects get progressively worse, then bad breath is the end. Bad breath is worse than organ rupture 😂😂😂.
JJ it really is the best thing
Technically, eating or drinking too much of ANYTHING can rupture organs. Namely, your stomach. Don't overfill a container or it breaks, who knew?!
This whole video had me awestruck, Festus has been my favorite character in the whole series and you have no idea how happy it makes me to see him done right by one of my favorite creators 💜💖❤️💝
Honestly I'd love to see more soft-drinks on the show! Would be cool to see your take on fruity soft-drinks! (blackberry soda pog?)

Moxie is in Fallout 4 (one of the DLC's anyhow) where it is called "Vim."
Jonathan Peck What I really want to see is the Captains Blend variant
WOW. Dude, just Wow. You got the lore right, you got the drink right. All i gotta say is, you deserve every single sub to you. Keep it up!
18:06 a good tip so you don't go through so mush of your product when carbonating is to bottle one portion into a plastic soda pop bottle along side your glass ones. Each day give the plastic bottle a little squeeze. when its done carbonating the plastic bottle should be as firm as a new soda pop straight off the shelf. at that time you can pop the seal on one of the glass ones to see if its the right bubblyness.
Ironically he talked about Moxie, that's the real life version of Vim in FO4
Suitable mainly for super mutants.

3:50 I was surprised to hear what you said about A&W rootbeer, so I did a little digging...apparently A&W here in Canada has been totally disconnected from the US version since the 70s! In addition to that, our root beer is different: "In July 2017, A&W Canada reformulated its root beer, dropping High Fructose Corn Syrup and some flavors from the recipe, substituting cane sugar, sarsaparilla root, licorice, birch bark, and anise. They launched the new formula by declaring Free Root Beer Day, serving free A&W Root Beer at all locations across the country from open to close on Saturday July 22, 2017"
I'm think the packs of canned/bottled A&W rootbeer we buy in Canada are still the American version, though.
Just thought it was interesting. Carry on.

@@Bt--vs8ru Probably in quick succession rather than over time. E.g. chugging them all in one hit
@@shiro_the_trap2513 i think in hardcore mode it causes some mild dehydration debuff so if you chug enough you will suffer from its sideeffects, not sure if blurred vision occurs ive never really gotten terribly low on that value
@@nicksande6880 I only ever had Dehydration but it's so minor that it doesn't really hurt. 20hp and a cap is worth drinking soda in Hardcore.

Tip for knowing if your bottles are at peak carbonation. Use a plastic bottle and have that as your tester to know that the carbonizations is ready. It will feel like a new soda before being opened.
